India has potential to become IT super power: Parmanand

Inaugurating a computer education and training centre here, he said that the world is getting smaller day by day due to the rapid growth of information technology which had also accelerated the speed of development in every field of human adventure.

The Governor, however, said that we must adopt new techniques and technologies for fast development without accepting any kind of invasion on our social and cultural unity.

He urged the administration, voluntary organisations and other public and private undertakings to take computer education and training in the rural areas of the country so as to promote the development scenario and employment avenues for the rural youth, as according to Mahatma Gandhi the real India lives in villages .

Punjab Higher Education Minister Master Mohan Lal was also present on the occasion. (UNI)

Osama associates planned to strike at US
Embassy in June-July: Police

NEW DELHI, June 19: The three arrested associates of international terrorist mastermind Osama Bin Laden were planning to bomb the US Embassy here between June and July, Delhi Police Commissioner Ajai Raj Sharma said.

He told PTI that the Sudanese National Abdel Raouff Hawash and his Indian associates Shameem Sarwar and abass wanted to carry out the bomb blast at the US Embassy as soon as possible, between June and July, but failed to do so as they could not recruit anybody to drive an explosive-laden car up to the Embassy.

Sharma said Delhi Police had received information regarding the plan two months ago and the attempt had been aborted due to the efforts of special cell and intelligence bureau which had been working on every point since then.

He said one or two of their associates may still be around as they had planned to recruit more people. Further investigations were on.

Hawash and Sarvar were arrested on June 15 and six kg of RDX and some pre-fabricated improvised explosive devices were seized from them.

Their third accomplice Abass was nabbed in Udaipur in Rajasthan. Stating that Delhi was a major target after Kashmir for terrorists as any strike leads to international publicity, Sharma said this was the first incident linked to Osama who is wanted by the US for the 1998 bombing of its embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

"Terrorist outfits perpetually try to do something spectacular in Delhi and the Delhi Police’s endeavour is to ensure that the militant outfits are unable to carry out any attack," the police chief said.

He said many of the cases were worked out as the Delhi police "followed every single piece of information" but added that sometimes there may be failures "howsoever good you are". (PTI)

Dr Swamy’s plea to probe Sonia & Rahul’s foreign accounts

CHENNAI, June 19: Janata Party president Dr Subramaniam Swamy has urged the Union Government to obtain from Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi a full disclosure of the accounts both operate abroad.

Dr Swamy, who released his letter to Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha at a press conference here today, claimed that the Securities and Exchange Board of the United States and other revenue authorities in that country were investigating into Rahul Gandhi’s recently depositing some "hot money" into his account in the Credit Swiss First Boston (CSFB) Bank in the United States.

He claimed that one such deposit was from an account operated by one Mr M S K Zieger on behalf of a trust. The hot money was garnered through drug dealing by the mafia, Dr Swamy claimed in his letter to Mr Sinha.

He suggested to Mr Sinha that the Enforcement Directorate in India could seek the help of the CSFB and the US authorities on the nature of the deposits in Rahul Gandhi’s accounts in U.S. and London and also trace Mr Zieger.

Dr Swamy alleged that Ms Gandhi’s forthcoming visit to the U.S. was to prevail on the Bush Government for an out-of-court settlement involving Rahul Gandhi. He also claimed that Ms Gandhi’s visit to Iceland was for a proposed meeting with the representatives of the LTTE and to make an attempt to erase her mother’s links with that terrorist organisation.

Referring to the forthcoming Summit between Prime Minister A B Vajpayee and Pakistan’s military ruler Gen Musharaff, Dr Swamy said the latter should not come with "high expectations" and go back disappointed.

He said there was no scope for the partition of Kashmir or to recognise the Line of Control as an international boundary.

Dr Swamy also criticised the Prime Minister’s decision to approve the Gas and Oil Pipeline Project from Iran to India through Pakistan, claiming that it would endanger India’s national security. The country’s energy supplies would "become a hostage to Pakistan’s whims", he added.(UNI)

Crucial SAARC meet postponed on Pak request

KATHMANDU, June 19: The third special session of the Standing Committee of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), aimed at kickstarting the long stalled process of the regional forum, has been postponed for an indefinite period on Pakistan’s request, media reports here said today.

The committee was all set to meet on June 27, but pakistani side last week wanted to postpone the meeting for an indefinite period, English Daily Space Time Today said quoting sources at the SAARC headquarters based here.

The meeting was earlier scheduled to take place in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo from June 8-9, but was postponed till June end as a mark of respect for King Birendra, who was slain in the June one palace massacre.

Pakistan could have requested for the postponement on account of the upcoming Indo-Pak summit, the paper said.

The SAARC process got stalled in the wake of the military takeover in Pakistan in October 1999. Kathmandu was to host the eleventh SAARC summit a month later.

Setting up of the South Asia Free Trade Area (SAFTA) and recommendations of the seven technical committees set up by the regional grouping prominently figured in the agenda of the proposed meeting, besides discussing some of the proposals of the group of eminent persons to speed up the SAARC process.

Also on the agenda were issued related to SAARC’s cooperation with other regional groups such as European Union and Asean. (PTI)

CBI gets nod to prosecute BPSC chief

PATNA, June 19: Jharkhand Government has accorded sanction to CBI for prosecution of Chairman of Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) Laxmi Roy in connection with Bihar Engineering Entrance Examination scam of 1996, official sources said.

CBI had recently approached the Jharkhand Government seeking sanction to prosecute Roy in the case, the sources said.

Bihar Governor V C Pande had earlier refused to give his nod on the grounds that Roy was not the BPSC Chairman at the time.

CBI then approached the Jharkhand Government as Roy was Principal of Regional Institute of Technology at Jamshedpur when the Engineering Entrance scam took place, the sources said.

Roy, who was arrested in this case earlier, was released on bail by a special court as CBI failed to file chargesheet against him within 90 days of his detention in judicial custody.

Roy was named as an accused in the case in his capacity as member of selection committee of the Combined Engineering Entrance Examination of 1996.

Large-scale irregularities are alleged to have been detected in the examination by CBI, the sources said. (PTI)

PM rules out alteration in Manipur borders

MUMBAI, June 19: Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee today ruled out any alteration in the borders of Manipur in the wake of expansion of Nagaland ceasefire to other Naga-dominated areas in the northeast and said the violence had been triggered due to "misgivings".

"The ceasefire extension will not affect Manipur. It is unfortunate that so many lives have been lost in violence in the state and property damaged. It is all because of certain misgivings", Vajpayee, who was discharged this afternoon from Breach Candy Hospital after his right knee joint replacement surgery, told a press conference here.

Vajpayee, who later emplaned for Delhi, was replying to a question on whether the centre would reconsider the issue of extension of the ceasefire with NSCN (I-M) beyond Nagaland’s borders.

"There will be no change in Manipur’s borders. It will remain what it is now," he said scotching apprehensions that the ceasefire extension could affect the northeastern states.

He appealed to the agitated people of the state to give up violence and come to the negotiating table to understand the implications of the Centre-NSCN (I-M) accord.

"There can be no solution through violence. Apparently the violence was a result of a combination of factors," he said adding the Centre under no circumstances would allow such unrest.

He also asked the youth not to give vent to their own state-level grievances at this juncture. (PTI)

8 Naxals killed in encounter

HYDERABAD, June 19: In unabated Naxalite-related violence, eight extremists of the outlawed People’s War Group (PWG), including three women, and a police constable were killed in a fierce encounter in Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh today, police said.

Acting on a tip-off that Naxalites were holding a major meeting on a hillock near Chintapally village, about 65 kms from Nalgonda town, a police party surrounded the hide-out, police said.

In the ensuing six-hour long fierce exchange of fire, eight ultras and a constable were killed while four extremists were believed to have escaped.

The encounter, which began at 7.30 am, continued till late afternoon, police said.

The police suspect that top functionaries of PWG belonging to three major ‘dalams’ in the area, were participating in the meeting when police cornered them.

The meeting was being held in the backdrop of a 48-hour bandh call, given by PWG, from tomorrow to protest last week’s encounter in which seven members of ‘kanagal dalam’ were killed.

As the local police party, supported by special anti-Naxal squad ‘greyhounds’, engaged extremists in the encounter, additional police reinforcements were rushed to the spot, police said.

Though the identity of the slain naxalites is yet to be ascertained, the police suspect that some top naxal leaders were among those killed in the encounter.(PTI)

Punjab Lok Morcha’s convention on July 7

CHANDIGARH, June 19: The ‘Punjab Lok Morcha’(PLM), a political front comprising of the Marxist Communist Party of India (MCPI), Shiromani Akali Dal(democratic), Samajwadi Party, Janata Dal (secular) and Samajwadi Janata Party will hold a state-level convention at Jallandhar on July seven to mobilise all non-Congress and non-Akali Dal (Badal)-BJP Alliance Forces in Punjab, where fresh Assembly elections are due early next year.

The MCPI central committee member Prem Singh Bhangu in a statement here today said the PLM was committed to fight against the policy of globalisation and the world trade organisation agreement signed and implemented by Centre and Punjab Government as it is bound to ruin the agriculture sector and small scale industry in the state by removing all quantitative restrictions on the import of foreign goods and capital.

He said the PLM which has outside support of Bharatiya Kisan Union (EKTA), Lok Sangharash Committee (a breakaway group of CPI(M), Punjab Milkmen Union and Mr Kamal Chaudhary, former MP, has called upon other left and democratic forces in the state especially CPI and CPI(M) to join the morcha to fight unitedly for the just and burning demands of the people. It has also called upon the Panthik groups, who are engaged in the process of forming Panthik unity to associate with the Morcha.

The convention among others would be addressed by Jagjit Singh Lyallpuri (MCPI), Jathedar Kuldip Singh Wadala (sad-democratic), Prof Teja Singh Tiwana (SP), Mr Harish Khanna (Janata Dal-S), Mr Darshan Singh Jida (SJP), S Pishora Singh Sidhupur (BKU-Ekta) and Mr Kamal Chaudhary, he added. (UNI)
