Lathicharge on yatris

Sir,

A few days back, there was a news in the local dailies that the Amar Nath yatris protesting against the Government decision for not allowing registration of fresh yatries were lathicharged which was not in a good taste, considering the religious sanctity of their mission as such incidents hurt the very sentiments of the yatries in particular and the general public at large.

While everybody will appreciate the concern of the Government about the safety of the yatries, but not allowing the registration of yatries who have already reached Jammu after having travelled/jouneyed from their home states with the sole purpose of undertaking this holy Amar Nath Yatra and having a darshan of the holy shiv-lingam in the Amar Nath Cave, also not appears fair on the part of the authorities.

It has been seen that despite several unfortunate happenings in the past, the number of yatris longing to pay their obeisance to the holy Ice Lingam is increasing years after year. Therefore, the govt needs to make more elaborate arrangements to accommodate any number of yatris and to make their yatra smooth, comfortable and memorable one.

Moreover, the influx of yatris is good for the economy of the state as well.

For future planning, the authorities may consider opening up such registration centres in almost all major cities of the country functioning a few months ahead of the yatra in order to have a fair assessment about the number of yatris in advance and accordingly making of suitable arrangements for them so that such unsavory incidents could be warded off.

Let Pakistan quit PoK

Sir,

Hurriyat contends that there are three parties to the Kashmir dispute, namely India, Pakistan and people of Kashmir. It claims that being the sole representative of Kashmiri people it has been fighting for their right of self determination in accordance with the UN resolutions. Similar is the stand of Pakistani leaders including General Musharraf. Pakistan says that it is extending 'moral and political' support to the Kashmiri people for achieving the right of self determination advocated by the United Nations 54 years ago.

On the upcoming Vajpayee-Musharraf summit the Hurriyat as well as Pakistan emphasis that Kashmir should be the core issue. Meanwhile, Pakistan High Commissioner in India has invited the Hurriyat leaders to the tea party being thrown in honour of General Musharraf. Excited over the invitation, the Hurriyat leaders feel that this will provide them an opportunity to have one to one talk with the General. And to a certain extent they are right.

The UN resolution on right of self determination, in three parts, says "The Government of Pakistan has agreed to withdraw it forces from the State of Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan will use its best endeavor to secure the withdrawal of tribesmen and Pakistani nationals from the State of Jammu and Kashmir and that the territory so vacated, pending a final solution, shall be administered by the local authorities of Jammu and Kashmir"

It further says "When the Commission shall have notified the Government of India that the tribesmen and Pakistani nationals have withdrawn and further that the Pakistani forces are being withdrawn from the State of Jammu and Kashmir, the Government of India agrees to begin to withdraw the bulk of its forces from the State in stages to be agreed upon with the Commission.".

The resolution further says "The Government of India and Pakistan reaffirm their wish that the further stature of the State of Jammu and Kashmir shall be determined in accordance with the will of the people up on acceptance of the truce agreement."

The resolution makes it explicitly clear that first it is Pakistan that has to initiate its implementation. The tea party invitation provides Hurriyat leaders an ideal opportunity to exhort upon General Musharraf to initiate the process of implementing the UN resolution to which it is committed. Hurriyat leaders should ask the General to vacate the Pak-occupied Kashmir, restore Gilgit, Hunza, Skardu and other areas annexed by Pakistan illegally and reclaim and restore the areas of Kashmir gifted to China on which the Karrokaram road has been constructed.

People in the Valley and outside have nicknamed the Hurriyat conference as 'His Masters voice of Pakistan' It is general belief that these leaders are at the beck and call of their masters across the border. The tea party invitation provides them an appropriate occasion and environment to prove to the people of the Valley and the rest of the world that they are nor puppets of Pakistan and they are not surviving on her cash doles. This they can do by telling the General in loud and clear voice that Pakistan is also un usurper of a part of Kashmir.

Absorb all doctors

Sir,

The Minister of Health Mian Altaf is requested to personally intervens and ensure that all doctors are absorbed in Govt service against available vacancies.

A few days back, a list of around 280 doctors, to be posted as Assistant Surgeons was released by J&K Public Service Commission. The number of Doctor selected was too less than the number of available vacancies of around 900.

Secondly many senior people instead of having got perference in the selection find themselves in the waiting list.

Your intervention in this matter is the need of the hour.

Power politics

Sir,

Mr. Jagmohan former governor of J&K State and now in union Cabinet of NDA Govt at Centre has clearly mentioned in his book" My Frozen turbulence in Kashmir" that people when in power in J&K State become pro-Indians and when out of power they become anti-Indians.

So recent statement of Gh. Mohd Shah (Gulshah) former Chief Minister of J&K State that J&K is not integral part of India is not something new.

Mr. Gul Shah should understand that such statements are not going to change map of India. J&K is crown of India and no party at the Centre as well as in State can change it.
