Yatris rush on low ebb
Success of summit will have bearing on
Amarnath pilgrimage: Sakina

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, July 15: The success of Indo, Pak summit will have a bearing on the Amarnath pilgrimage and the Government will remove the restrictions imposed on the number of pilgrims to be allowed for daily darshan due to security reasons if the talks end on goodwill note.

This was revealed by Minister of Tourism Miss Sakina Ittoo while talking to Excelsior today. The Minister who showed optimism over the success of summit said let us pray that the talks between Indo-Pak leaders open a new chapter in the history and a new era of peace and prosperity to begin.

She said the N C Government has the earnest desire that the number of Yatris should increase every year as this will promote the state economy.

She said it gives me immense pleasure to see today hundreds of yatris who have the darshan of Holy Cave via Baltal visiting Mugal Gardens .But we are constrained to restrict the Yatra number due to security reasons as yatris welfare is our prime concern, she added.

Miss Sakina said since the N C Government came to power in 1996 the number of pilgrims increased considerably but the last years carnage at Pahalgam has hurt us all. Such an act has send a wrong signal throughout the country and this is the reason that Government has restricted the number.

She said during her visit to Jammu last time she saw about 700 stranded yatris at TRC who had come from Mumbai and far flung areas for darshan of Holy Cave. These yatris had staged a dharna in front of TRC and after I reached there I issued directions for their registration.

Meanwhile, the number of pilgrims from rest of the country reaching here has reached to a low ebb during the last two days.

Keeping the past figures in consideration, the decline in yatris number on July 14 and 15 has been over 40 per cent. The main reason as the sources put it was the apprehension of militants strike on the eve of Agra summit between the heads of Indo-Pak governments.

Even the Yatris who reached here in groups from the different parts of the country today and yesterday admitted that many members of their groups scheduled to perform the darshan on the eve of Pervez Musharaf’s visit to New Delhi cancelled the programme.

While considerably a low number 2,608 pilgrims left the M A Stadium Base Camp here for the Holy Shrine of Amarnath today. The figure was much low yesterday.

This paved the way for authorities to clear the remaining stranded pilgrims at Jammu and they during the late night hours yesterday registered over 500 yatris.

Confirming this the Director Tourism, Mr S S Bhalla said 500 yatris were registered during the late night yesterday as the arrival of pilgrims from the other parts of country was much less than the fixed number of 3,500.

However, he denied that the registration was officially opened at Jammu and said this was done for yesterday only.

The 2,608 yatris who left in a cavalcade of 110 vehicles for the Holy Cave today from here include 1,965 male, 377 female, 243 Sadhus and 23 children.

An official spokesman from Anantnag said that all the pilgrims have reached Nunwan Camp by the evening. He said the track from Pahalgam to Holy Cave was open and the weather was pleasant throughout the day.

Meanwhile, two more Yatris have died in the late night hours yesterday at Pahalgam and Sheshnag respectively.

They have been identified as Tejesh Moti, Son of Baba Moti of Ahmedabad Gujarat. He died of cardiac arrest at Pahalgam. While another pilgrim Ramni son of Shanta Ramni of Prakash Nagar, Chennai died of heart attack at Army Hospital Sheshnag. With this the death toll in the month long Amaranth pilgrimage has reached 11 so far.
