Agassi and Steffi Graf wont be marrying this weekend HAMBURG, July 14: Speculation that Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi would be marrying this weekend was scotched by a reliable source, who told Deutsche Presse-Agentur no wedding was planned. There had been widespread speculation, particularly from newspapers in 32-year-old Grafs native Germany, that the couple would wed today in Florida, where Graf has a home. Agassis business enterprise had confirmed Thursday that the 22-time Grand Slam winner who retired in 1999 is pregnant with his baby. The child was due in mid-December, said a spokeswoman. "This is a very exciting time for us," 31-year-old Agassi said in a statement. "We are so happy to have been blessed with this gift." The couple had shared the news with family and friends in recent weeks, said the Agassi enterprises publicist in Las Vegas. Agassi and Graf, two of the best-known names in tennis, have been in a relationship since 1999, but they are not married. Agassi - knocked out by Australian Pat Rafter in the semi-finals of the just-ended Wimbledon Tournament - is in the midst of a career revival after winning the Australian Open earlier this year and collecting the French Open and U S Open titles two years ago. Agassi has seven major titles and is one of only a handful of tennis players to have won Wimbledon, the Drench Open, the Australian Open and the U S Open, which are all played on different surfaces. DORTMUND, July 14: World champion Viswanathan Anand drew his second successive game at the Dortmund Sparkassen 2001 meeting signing a quick truce against GM Michael Adams of England. After two rounds anand was in joint third place. The lead position remained unchanged at the top with braingames match winner GM Vladimir Kramnik of Russia and Hungarian GM Peter Leko leading with 1.5 points each. Playing white for the first time in the tournament Anand was up against a petroff defence and did not get the desirable advantage out of the opening. Adams chose the same variation in which he had lost to Leko in the first round but this time the englishman had an improvement up his sleeves that easily yielded him a level position. Experts considered Adams novelty on the 18th move a serious one and a draw was the most likely result from thereon. Anand decided against striving hard for a victory and settled for draw in just 21 moves. This was so far the shortest game of the tournament. Kramnik and Leko played a not-so-gripping draw in the rubinstein variation of the Nimzo Indian defence where the former played with the white pieces. Kramnik who has had some stupendous successes in the opening was in for a surprise, as Leko is more known for his love for the grunfeld defence. However it was a presumable shift since none would have liked to walk in and check what Kramnik had in store in grunfeld after his preparation in the braingames match against Kasparov. The game took shape routinely and Kramnik had a semblance of an advantage by the 20th move. At a certain moment it seemed likely that Kramnik would win the game when Kramnik was left a pawn up and everyone was quite sure as to the outcome of the game. However Lekos defence was precise and he escaped easily. The game lasted 35 moves. The sly Hungarian, playing Kramnik on a regular basis, is among the very few chess players in the world not to stop the clock and say "I resign". The hero of the day was undoubtedly Bulgarian GM Veselin Topalov who left behind his loss to Kramnik yesterday to score over GM Alexander Mororzevich of Russia in yet another Petroff defence game of the day. Playing black Topalov faced a rather off-beat set up by Morozevich who certainly looked in the mood of a major revival of the opening. As it turned out this was not to be and Topalov got a firm grip on the position with his a excellent technical moves that included a decline of the piece offered by Morozevich. Once in control Topalov thwarted all attempts of the Russian to complicate the matters and romped home in 40 moves. Standings after round 2: 1-2 V Kramnik, Peter Leko (1.5 points each); 3-4: V Anand, V Topalov (1); 5-6: A Morozevich, M Adams (0.5). (PTI) |

UBS Open Gstaad GSTAAD (Switzerland), July 14: Juan Carlos Ferrero refrained from singing as the drops dripped down, but the Spaniard managed everything else required in the mountain rain to reach the semi-finals of the 600,000-dollar UBS Open Gstaad. The second-seeded talent, who leads the ATP with four titles already this season, was merciless on the high-altitude clay of this pristine mountain village, dismantling the game of French veteran Cedric Pioline yesterday. The 6-2, 6-1 demolition job from the 21-year-old Spaniard lasted just 55 minutes with some of the match played in a light sprinkle and the contest begun 90 minutes late. But the less-than-prefect weather was a far cry from last years near-washout, when the final - Alec Corretja won it - had to be extended until Monday. Ferrero said that he actually did not mind the damp at all. "It slows down the court slightly," he said of clay which - due to its location at 1,000 meters above sea level - can play as fast as a hard-court on dry sunny days." "I dont mind at all that the court is a little bit slowed," said the winner. "It helps my game. I had a good match, though Id say I just played at a normal level. I had all of the winners today and his game declined as the match went on." Third seed Sebastien Grosjean, conqueror of Andre Agassi at Roland Garros last month in front of Bill Clinton, was equally speedy in his quarter-final outing. The Frenchman disposed of sixth seed Franco Squillari of Argentina in just 51 minutes on court, taking a comprehensive 6-0, 6-1 result. It was looking bleak for Squillari, winner of multiple titles on European clay in Munich, as he faced a 6-0, 5-0 reality check in Grosjeans favour. But the South American struggled through to win a game, putting himself onto the scoreboard with just minutes to spare before Grosjean wrapped up his second win against no defeats in the series. Grosjean stands fifth in the ATP champions points race, two spots behind Ferrero on third. Like Ferrero, the Frenchman is not afraid of heights either, having grown up for the first 11 years of his life in the mountains above nice. New father Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic knocked out the last Swiss standing, defeating Michel Kratochvil 6-4, 6-2. Holder and fourth seed Alex Corretja was trying to join Ferrero in extending Spanish dominance at an event where Iberians rule the trophy table. The Barcelona right-hander was playing for a place in the last four against Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia.(DPA) |
