Begum Musharraf came, saw but did not buy

NEW DELHI, July 14: The cottage emporium staff here were a disappointed lot today with their distinguished guest from across the border not buying anything from the showroom showcasing Indian handicrafts.

Though Begum Sehba Musharraf, who visited the emporium in the afternoon, did not buy anything, she liked and cherished the exquisite collection specially dispalyed for her.

The special presentation included an eight-feet tall green Orissa stone statue of Krishna kept at the entrance of the showroom.

"It is good you showed me these collections. I liked them. If I want to buy anything, I can ask Mrs Qazi (wife of Pakistan High Commisioner to India) to buy it for me," she said while enjoying the texture of the textile kept on display at the first floor of the emporium.

However, the emporium chairperson Tinu Joshi said "our main aim was to sell the country’s impression of rich handicrafts and we are happy that the first lady of Pakistan cherished the handicrafts."

Inspecting the exquisite carving of the Krishna statue with a magnifying glass, Begum Musharraf, dressed in the mouvish colour cotton salwar-kameez, seemed enjoying every bit of the handicrafts kept their.

Begum Musharraf also had a taste of Malai Ladoo and Kaju offered by the emporium staff.

The emporium also presented her with a Madhubani painting with the theme of friendship and a set of jewellery box and vase made up of silver bidri.

Though she does not wear saris, she liked the collection very much, Joshi said.

In the carpet section, Begum Musharraf also liked the silk carpets shown to her and said though Pakistan was famous for its ‘Bukhara and Afghani’ carpets, these silk carpets were very different and unique.

Asked if the invitation was sent by the cottage or it was Begum’s own choice to come to the emporium, Joshi said "Abida Qazi is a frequent visitor here, may be she has recommended it to the Begum."

The appreciation was also very clear from the message the first lady of Pakistan wrote in the visitors book: "This has been an educational experience. The crafts are very good and exceptional in some instances. Thank you very much." (PTI)

Oil struck near Nazira in Assam

SIBSAGAR, July 14: Oil was struck in the exploratory oil well at Nazira oilfield, 18 north-east of Sibsagar.

Mr Subir Raha, Chairman and Managing Director Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) announced this at a press conference here yesterday.

The oilfield is expected to have enormous potential as it is contiguous to the existing Lakwa and Galeky oilfields, which were discovered in 1964 and 1968 respectivly.

The ONGC CMD further stated that during 2000-2001, ONGC drilled 30 wells in this region and produced around 2 million tonnes of crude oil and 300 million cubic meters of natural gas. ONGC earned a gross revenue of Rs 1086 crore in the eastern region, of which Rs 353 crore was from taxes and royalties.

As on March 31, 2001, ONGC invested Rs 6662 crore in this region and paid Rs 5131 crore as statutory payment to the Centre, the ONGC CMD said.

He also said despite concerted efforts for improving the financial performance in this region, ONGC had been incurring losses during the last couple of years, and in the last financial year the loss amounted to Rs 218 crore.

He said the ONGC operation in Nangalandin was likely to start very shortly as the hurdles were being removed though sustained efforts by the Union and Nagaland Governments. (UNI)
