Leh schools show poor performance

Sir,

The result of 10th class in Ladakh Province was declared recently. The pass percentage is mere 18 percent. This is quite shocking. This clearly reflects the educational environment in the province. Even after 53 years of independence, there has been no spectacular change in the result. Almost every year the percentage fluctuates between 15 -22 percent.

It is quite surprising that neither government nor the people of Ladakh pay attention to this sector which I consider is vital in the present scenario. It is the age of technology which demands high standard of education. If that is not available, then how can we move forward.

It is also worthwhile to mention here that schools and Higher Secondary Schools in Leh district are in a shambles. They are without adequate staff and infrastructure. To perform experiments there are no instruments and tools in the laboratories. Libraries and without books. Teachers both local and no local usually play truant. Students are irresponsible. They also dubunk their classes of and on. The Government too has remained indifferent towards this sector. Schools in the area are hardly inspected, by the concerned authorities. Grants sanctioned for laying infrastructure are too meagre. Everything is in mess. No one is accountable.

Games are hardly played in this region. No co-curricular activity takes place. In the first place, players are hardly encouraged. The spirit of teaching and learning is totally missing in the class rooms.

If this trend did not change, there is no doubt that students will have a bleak future.

Quota system

Sir,

In each and every competitive exam we will find that there are some seats reserved under certain quotas. I want to know why these quotas are there if all the students are studying in the same schools, going to the same tuitions and studying from the same books? Why these students are getting the privilege over others? And moreover, if it is a competitive exam. It is the analysis of a child's mental calibre at one level.

Secondly the students who are applying under these categories are discouraged and they do not really work hard and the third and last demerit of quota system is that this is not the fair system of selecting the students for various courses.

Thus, this is my request to the concerned authorities to do something for these quotas so that the above mentioned disadvantages can be removed and there could be a fair selection in this exams.

Kashmir: A bilateral issue

Sir,

The below given excerpts have been compiled to serve as an eye opener for those who believe in militancy and fundamentalism and who are bent upon killing people on the name of religion.

I

"............... The Punjabi Muslim feudals...... have survived till to date and even today constitute an important political force in Pakistani politics. They have fooled the British and the Pakistani masses whose leaders they became after 1947. Today their achievements include collaboration will all martial law Governments and dominance of all democratically elected governments of Pakistan including the present military government. I am a great admirer of late Abraham Lincoln but I must admit as the Punjabi Muslim feudals have proved that sometimes some people manage to fool all the people all the time"

"............................ As it is crystal clear that today's world is totally against any violent/military solution to Kashmir problem as Clinton also declared that there could be no military solution to the Kashmir problem. Including China, all major power are in favour of Indian point of view that Kashmir is a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan. In this scenario our policy of banking upon international community to play an effective role in the resolution of Kashmir dispute has not been able to achieve desired results."
