AHMEDABAD, Jan 30: Five days
after the killer earthquake shattered Gujarat, hope was
fading fast today for the thousands
trapped under rubble prompting Defence
Minister George Fernandes to apprehend a
staggering death toll of one lakh people.
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee,
however, did not endorse Fernandes
"personal assessment." In
Lucknow, he cautioned people about a
"harsh" budget and asked them
to be ready for fresh taxes to mobilise
