Excelsior Correspondent Jammu, Jan 13: As a part of the 12th Road Safety Week-2001, J&K Traffic Police and Society for Consumer Protection and Environment organised a seminar on road safety here today. The Minister of State for Home, Mr Mushtaq Ahmed Lone was the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that the need of the hour is to inculcate the sense of traffic rules and norms among the people to avoid accidents on the road. He said that most of the accidents take place due to the negligence of drivers. Referring to the measures being taken by the Government for curbing the road accidents and minimizing the density of traffic on the roads to save precious lives, Mr Lone said an alternate National Highway would be constructed under private sector. The survey work and other formalities have already been completed, he added. Mr Lone said NGO's can play vital role to educate the people about the rules and regulations of the traffic system. He said that NGO's should extend helping hand for the betterment and welfare of the people. He also assured that the suggestions made by the speakers will be given top priority inspite of financial problems. The Inspector General of Police, Traffic, Mr M S Wani and Commissioner/Secretary, Transport, Mr M A Ganai who were also present at the seminar said that the aim of organising this seminar was to seek valuable suggestions from the prominent citizens to better the system of transport in the State. He also disclosed the measures taken by the Government to improve the traffic system in the State. Among others Mr K K Gupta, Retd. Justice, Sheikh Ghulam Rasool, Ex-Chief Secretary, Mr T S Wazir, MTCA, Mr M M Khajuria, Rted. DGP, Prof. M R Puri, Ex-Vice Chancellor, Jammu university and a number of prominent citizens were also present. They also put-forth their valuable suggestions to improve the traffic system in the State. |
Streamlining PDD, prevent power theft: Slathia Excelsior Correspondent Jammu, Jan 13: The Minister for Power and Tourism, Mr S S Slathia has called upon the engineers of different wings of the Power Development Department to gear up efforts in streamlining the functioning of the department to make sincere endeavours to provide relief to the public. He was reviewing the power situation at a meeting of Chief Engineers and Superintending Engineers of different wings of the PDD in his office here today. He asked them to keep strict vigil over the departmental functionaries and ensure plugging of leakages and loopholes. Mr Slathia said that he is accompanying the Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah to Chandigarh to meet Punjab Chief Minister to seek the State's share of 120 MW power from Punjab. He said some more relief is expected from the Centre next week as assured by the Union Energy Minister during his recent meeting with him at Delhi. Among others the Development Commissioner Power, Mr Vinod Sharma, Joint Development Commissioner, Mr H S Gupta and Chief Engineer, EM&RE Mr H S Raina were present. |
Peerzada inspects Forest Division Jammu Excelsior Correspondent Jammu, Jan 13: The Minister for Forests and Environment, Peerzada Ghulam Ahmad conducted an extensive tour of Paloura block, Forest Division Jammu, besides State Forest Research Institute Complex and State Forest Corporation sale depot at Janipora. He was accompanied by MLA Inderwal, Qazi Jalal-ud-Din, MLC, Mr Nizam-ud-Din, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Director, Environment and Remote Sensing, Director State Research Institute and other senior officers of the department. During his inspection to Compartment No. 3 of Satran Beat, the Minister took a serious note of the encroachment made by the Gujjars and Bakerwals a decade before and instructed for immediate strengthening the watch and ward arrangements to save the forest land for further encroachment and to ensure to take legal action against encroachers. The Minister also inspected Compartment No. 2 Sadani in the same block where a huge chunk of forest-land has been encroached by the locals in connivance of the Forest Department. He ordered on the spot that the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests should immediately conduct an inquiry in this connection and place all those officials under suspension who had or have leak with the locals who are adamant to encroach the forest land. He ordered that the Demarcation Wing of the department for deployment of sufficient number of revenue staff be strengthened on deputation to complete the demarcation work immediately. The Divisional Forest Officer, Demarcation of Jammu division should immediately demarcate the area and fix boundary pillars as per the settlement record. Peerzada instructed that the staff having longest stay be immediately shifted and those having blemished record of service be punished under rules. He ordered that a piece of forest land adjacent to State Forest Corporation sale depot, Janipura be handed over to State Forest Corporation for its fencing and construction of Divisional Office Complex. The Minister also inspected State Forest Corporation sale depot, Janipura. During inspection he instructed that the depot be bifurcated in two parts viz. Sales and Stores so that the chances of exchange and pilferage could be avoided. He also instructed that the kheir wood lying in the depot be immediately dispose off to save it from deterioration. |
SFC Federation assures full support to PSE JAC Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Jan 13: State Forest Corporation Federation, Srinagar and Government Employees Conference has assured full support to any programme announced by the Public Sector Employees Joint Action Committee (PSEJAC). This assurance was given by a visiting delegation of the Federation office bearers in a meeting held at TRC here today evening. The meeting was also attended by the Government Employees Conference leaders from Srinagar, Messrs Mohd Yousf Khan, chief patron, Ishtiyaq Ahmed Beg, general secretary, Shabir Hussain, publicity chief and Ghulam Mohi-u-Din advisor. A resolution in this regard was adopted in the meeting. It said that both the employees organisations will extend full support to any step taken by the PSEJAC Jammu for redressal of various grievances of Government and Public sector employees in future. The meeting urged the PSEJAC chairman Mr Suresh Sharma to announce any programme so that the demands can be got conceded and the trade union movement gets a boost. Hurriyat hopeful of getting passports SRINAGAR, Jan 12: Hurriyat Conference today expressed hope that the Centre will take a positive decision and release travel documents to its five-member team to facilitate the visit of Hurriyat leaders to Pakistan. "I am hopeful that the Government of India will release the travel documents to Hurriyat delegation to visit Pakistan on the scheduled date," Chairman of Hurriyat Abdul Gani Bhat told PTI today. Reacting to the statement of the Union Home Minister L K Advani that Government will not be guided by the kind of stand the Hurriyat takes, Bhat said "we too do not want our delegation to be named by New Delhi". He said we are not going for a pleasure trip to Pakistan. "The delegation of Hurriyat will not go to Pakistan if the passports were not released to all the five members of the delegation announced by the executive of the 23-party alliance yesterday", Bhat declared. Asked whether there was any pressure on him from any quarter in formulating the members of the delegation, Bhat said "we dont succumb to pressures. There was no no pressure from any quarter on Hurriyat leadership over finalisation of the team". "It was purely our own decision and there was no role for anybody in the composition of the delegation", Bhat added. He said he opted out from the delegation as he was authorised by the executive to choose the delegation among the members. Bhat dismissed reports that the fire-brand Jamaat-e-Islami leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani was included in the team following telephone calls by unfamiliar militant outfit yesterday. There is no truth in the press reports, Bhat said. However, he said, the executive expressed grave concern over the activities of so-called militant outfit Mujahideen-e-Haq whose activists made an abortive attempt on the life of Hurriyat leader Shahidul Islam recently. We do not know who these people are and on whose behest they are working, Bhat said and warned them not to indulge in anti movement activities. He said the executive meeting took a serious note of the attack on Shahidul Islam and threats being received by some other leaders of the alliance. People asked to work for integration of country, state Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Jan 13: The integration of State is as important as the integration of the nation. This was stated by the former Minister and senior National Conference (NC) leader Dr Mehboob Beg while addressing the public rally in South Kashmir district of Anantnag on Friday. He urged the Centre to provide all the financial assistance to the state so that the developmental works can be undertaken and peoples lot ameliorated who have suffered tremendous loss over the decade long militancy. The N C leader while endorsing the ceasefire declaration urged the people to work for its success. He however, warned the Centre not to foist any leader on Kashmir. He said the NC is the only representative of the people as the Party enjoys support in all the three regions of the state while the Hurriyat leadership is a divided lot and have yet to prove their representative character. He also expressed grave concern over the recent dowry deaths in the town and urged the workers to fight out this menace. |

actively participate Excelsior Correspondent UDHAMPUR, Jan 13: Mr Shiv Charan Gupta, leader of BJP Legislature Party during the course of his two-days tour of Reasi and Pouni areas of Udhampur district expressed his deep anguish and concern over the problem of un-employment erupted due to the total halt of developmental process. Addressing party workers at Reasi and Pouni, Mr Gupta urged the State Government to immediately start the execution of Sawalkote Hydel Power Project to ensure its speedy execution. He said that the State Government could not take up the execution of project on its own due to the prevailing financial crunch so it should hand over the same to NHPC. He called upon the people to participate in the coming Panchayat elections in a big way to ensure de-centralisation of administration at grass-root level and to make the Panchayats effective democratic institutions to be instrumental in restructuring the rural economy and accelerate the pace of development. He exhorted the rural people to contribute their might in the process of development of their respective areas and said that Panchayat elections have provided them an opportunity to put in their best efforts for the upliftment of the womenfolks and speed up the development in rural areas. He also assailed the State Government for declaring the candidates elected un-opposed having indirect support of the ruling party especially in districts of Rajouri, Poonch and Doda. Apology from Govt demanded Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Jan 13: The State units of Vishav Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal and Durga Vahini have strongly condemned the action of the State Government in effecting curtailment of electric supply for 11 hours even on the auspicious day of Lohri. In a meeting of Hindu bodies held here today, the leaders expressed anguish over blatant disregard by the Government of the religious sentiments of Hindus by effecting power cut even during late evening and night when the traditional cultural and religious ceremony of burning Lohri was to be performed by the Hindus and Sikhs who observe this festival with religious sanctity. The meeting which was attended among others by Dr Rama Kant Dubey, vice-president VHP, Surinder Sharma, joint-secretary VHP, Dr Veena Gupta, president Durga Vahini, Surinder Aggarwal, president Jammu city unit VHP and Mr Inderjeet Khajuria warned the authorities against playing with the religious sentiments of Hindus. It was demanded that authorities should tender apology for this act of sacrilege failing which they will have to face serious consequences. The VHP, Bajrang Dal and Durga Vahini also extended whole hearted support to Jammu province Bandh on January 15 the call for which has been given by ABVP to protest against prolonged power cuts and illegal admissions in Medical Colleges. The party units all over the region are instructed to fully participate in the protest marches and make the Bandh a grand success by mobilizing all resources. It was also threatened to resort to direct action and snap power connections to the residences of ministers and other VIPs if the authorities dont mend their ways and continue playing with the sentiments of the people. |
Relief for Jammu migrants at par with KPs demanded Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Jan 13: A meeting of migrant families from Thana Mandi, Budhal, Darhal, Nowshera, Kalakote, Surankot, Poonch, Haveli and Mahore was held today under the chairmanship of Mr Mushtaq Khan, state president of J&K National Panthers Party to take stock of the sufferings of the said uprooted people in the wake of militancy. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Khan made fervent appeal to the Governor Mr G C Saxena and Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah to personally intervene and order immediate cash and kind relief to migrants of Jammu province at par with Kashmiri migrants. He flayed the Government for adopting discriminatory policy towards migrants of Jammu province who are mostly farmers and ex-servicemen whose entire livelihood have been destroyed and are at the verge of starvation. He said that administration must immediately organise proper camps for migrants of Jammu province to provide basic amenities including medicare facilities on war footings as the cold wave has already effected children and old aged people causing loss of more than one dozen human beings only due to the apathy of present rulers. Mr Shamsher Singh, president of Beli Charana Migrant Union gave details of the hardships being faced by the migrants almost under open sky in make shift temporary arrangements. He said that no official or Minister bothered to visit Beli Charana and express even a word of sympathy with the militancy victims. He warned that in case relief and rehabilitation measures are not taken within two days, migrants of Jammu province will be constrained to come on roads to seek justice. |

getting more support Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Jan 13: Various political and social groups have condemned power curtailments and offered support to the Jammu bandh call given by the ABVP on January 15. Senior Congress leaders, Messrs Mangat Ram Sharma, Mohd Ayub Khan, Peerzada Mohd Syed, Moti Lal Koul, Taj Mohi-Ud-Din, Amrit Malhotra, Ashok Kumar Sharma, Shiv Dev Singh, Diwakar Singh, Garu Ram, C L Bhat, Ashwani Sharma, Rajinder Singh and Ramesh Mottan in a joint statement issued here today expressed grave concern over the failure of Government to provide adequate power supply to Jammu region. They said that the prolonged power curtailment has affected the studies of students whose annual examinations are approaching and encouraged miscreants and militants to strike. They further said that 11 hours power cut is a sufficient proof to assess as to what extent the present National Conference Government has failed in fulfilling the commitments made in 1996 Assembly elections. Obviously the Government has failed not only in the field of providing electricity but on all fronts raising only the unemployment, corruption and militancy. The leader vehemently stressed the Government to make adequate arrangements for providing sufficient power supply to Jammu province so that Jammu people in general and students in particular heave a sigh of relief. They warned that any delay in the matter would have dire consequences. Meanwhile, All Kashmiri Pandit Solidarity Conference in a meeting held under the chairmanship of Mr O N Trisal extended full support to the bandh call given by ABVP on January 15. Addressing the meeting, Mr Trisal said that the shortage of electricity has made the study of student miserable besides industrial development too has suffered heavy losses. He also paid tributes to the members of Kashmiri Pandit Biradari who were got killed by the Pakistan sponsored militants and also appealed the community members to jointly observe the holocaust day on January 19. Mohalla Malhotra Welfare Association in a meeting held here today criticised the State Government for imposing prolonged power cuts on the people of Jammu region. The Association also extended full support to the parties for bandh on January 15. Those who spoke in the meeting included Messrs Desh Bandhu, Vijay Kumar, Ashwani Sharma, Vinay Malhotra, Ramesh Chander, Rajinder Verma, Sunil Gupta and Barinder Gupta. |
KUTA demands appointment of VC Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Jan 13: Executive Council of Kashmir University Teachers Association (KUTA) is making hectic parleys in Jammu to pursue issues concerning the University during the ensuing University Council meeting scheduled to be held on February 17, 2001. The agenda includes appointment of regular Vice-Chancellor. In a press release, KUTA appealed to the Chancellor, the pro-Chancellor and the members of the University Council to take steps for the appointment of Vice-Chancellor in the interest of the institution at the earliest. The release said that the academic atmosphere was vitiated because many departments are under staffed although many faculty positions have since been advertised. Most of the developmental activities have been kept in abeyance for want of regular Vice-Chancellor. KUTA is apprising the council members about the present scenario of the institution to ensure the favourable decisions regarding issues concerning the University in general and the teaching staff in particular. |
People from all
regions will be involved in Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Jan 13: The Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta has said that people from all the three regions of State will be involved in the on-going peace process. The Minister was speaking to media persons during annual function of the Swami Vivekanand College of Education, Lakhanpur in Kathua district about 90 kilometres from here. Prof Gupta said that Centre has made it amply clear that the views of the people from all the three regions will be taken into consideration and all the concerned parties as well as social organisations will be taken into confidence in any dialogue for the resolution of Kashmir issue. He further stated that the Centre wants to rebuilt the infrastructure of education, health and other necessities which has suffered heavily due to decade long militancy. Union Minister said that 12 tube wells have been dug in the Kandi belt for the benefit of the people. He further stated that Centre has been giving first priority to the necessary amenities and every possible steps have been taken for providing basic necessities to the people in general and rural people in particular. He said that the Centre has embarked on disinvestment programme where by the resources will be generated and will be used in giving amenities to the people at large. He,however, made it clear that public sector units which are continuously running on loses will be put disinvestment. Earlier speaking at the annual function, Prof Gupta advised the youth to follow the path of Swami Vivekanand and work for the development and upliftment of the country. He said that messages of the Swamiji have a special importance for the youth as he always believed that the future of the country can be glorified only by them. Referring to the famous address of the Swamiji at the world religious conference at Chicago, the Union Minister said that Swamiji represented India in the exemplary manner and carried the messages of the Indian culture to thee West. He further urged the youth to take inspirations from the life of Swamiji and make India a world leader in 21st century. On this occasion chairman of the college, Capt (Retd) Qubla Singh and Director College Development, Jammu University, Prof Devinder Singh also addressed the gathering. Muslim Auqaf Trust opposes
construction of Ram temple Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, Jan 13: Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah has stressed on the need of blending religious and modern education to face the challenges of the 21st century. Addressing the General Council meeting of the J&K Muslim Auqaf Trust (MAT), the Chief Minister urged for introducing computer education in the Muslim Auqaf Trusts educational institutions so that the students would compete and face challenges of the new millennium. Referring to the education programme launched by the Trust, Dr Abdullah said underscored the need of blending religious and modern education. Expressing serious concern over the encroachment of MAT land, Dr Abdullah directed the Trustee to notify list of the encroachers and start their eviction. He said that reconstruction of the historic Khanqah adjacent to the Shrine of Sheikh-ul-Aalam at Chrar-i-Sharief, would be taken up during April this year. The Khanqah on the pattern of its original architect would be completed in four years and in the first instance Rs one crore would be released by the MAT shortly. Earlier, in its meeting which held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah, the J&K Muslim Auqaf Trust (MAT) today warned against any construction of a temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya. Meeting said that this move would vitiate the atmosphere and plunge the country into turmoil. A resolution was unanimously passed in the General Council meeting of the MAT with Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah, who is also chairman of the MAT, in the chair. Resolution called upon the Central Government to stop Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) from implementing its agenda on temple construction at the disputed site. "No construction should be allowed at the dispute site until a decision by the Supreme Court or an agreement between the two communities", the resolution said adding that any such move would be resisted. Holding the then Union Government squarely responsible for the destruction of the 500 years old Babri mosque, the resolution said that the entire Muslim world has been emotionally attached to this issue. It said that the destruction of the mosque has tremendously hurt the sentiments of 180 millions Muslims of the country who want the mosque to be rebuilt at its original site. The resolution urged the Centre to foil any attempt aimed at changing the status quo of the site. Reviewing the progress registered under construction programmes of shrines, the meeting was informed that the Charar-i-Sharief shrine would be completed by June this year with 12 crores expected to be expanded on its construction. The meeting also discussed the budget estimates of the Trust. It was said that the income of MAT last year was Rs 7.04 crores against an expenditure of Rs 6.77 crores. This includes Rs 5.84 lakh financial assistance provided to destitutes and widows during the period. The meeting among others was attended by Vice-Chairman MAT, Mr Ghulam Nabi Kochak, Trustees, Mr A R Rather, Mr Ali Mohammed Sagar, Mr Sharief-ud-Din, Mufti Azam, Mufti Bashin-ud-Din and Dr Mohammed Tayub Kamili. The meeting observed two minutes silence in the memory of the Syed Ghulam Ahmad Kamili, Abdul Salam Dhar and Haji Mohammed Akbar Wani who passed recently. |
R S Sharma, others strongly condemn killing of MLAs kin Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Jan 13: Senior Congress leader and MLA Nowshera Assembly segment has strongly condemned the brutal killing of Mr Abdul Majid Mir, brother of Mr Dilawar Mir, MLA Rafiabad, Sopore by the militants in Kashmir Valley yesterday. In a statement issued here today, Mr Sharma said such a dastardly act has generated lot of public resentment. In his condolence message Mr Sharma has expressed his deepest sympathies with the bereaved family for this irreparable loss. Mr Sharma has also condemned the grenade attack by militants on the residence of Minister of State for Home, Mr Mushtaq Ahmed Lone and Ch. Mohammed Aslam former Congress president. The killing of Mr Abdul Majid Mir brother of Mr Dilawar Mir has also been strongly condemned by the senior NC leader and former Minister, Dr Mehboob Beg. Dr Beg has demanded that adequate security be provided to kiths and kins of NC leaders especially in Valley who have become the main target of militants since the declaration of ceasefire. Strongly condemning the killing of Mr Abdul Majid Mir by militants at Rahma Sopore yesterday the CPI secretary Mr Abdul Rehman Takroo termed it an act against the humanity. Mr Takroo also expressed his deepest sympathy with the bereaved family at this hour of grief and tragedy. |
