Hingis beats Davenport to win Sydney title

SYDNEY, Jan 13: Switzerland’s Martina Hingis beat Lindsay Davenport 6-3 4-6 7-5 today to win the Sydney international women’s title for the second time in five years and firm as favourite for next week’s Australian Open.

Australian teenager Lleyton Hewitt also confirmed his place as one of the favourites for Melbourne when he beat Magnus Norman 6-4 6-1 on Saturday to become the first man since Pete Sampras in 1993-94 to win back-to-back titles in Sydney.

Hingis finished 2000 ranked number one in the world but has not won a grand slam singles title in two years and is desperately hoping to end her drought at Melbourne this month.

She was beaten by Davenport in last year’s Australian Open final but has started the new year fitter and stronger than ever and gained a huge psychological edge over her main rival with today’s victory.

Hingis looked to be well in control of the final when she took the opening set in 31 minutes then led 4-2 in the second before she started to unravel, incurring a warning for smashing her racquet in frustration.

The American world number two broke back to win seven of the next eight games, taking the second set then racing to a 3-1 lead in the third, as she suddenly seemed to be in command.

But Hingis broke back to win six of the next eight games, getting the crucial break in the 11th game when Davenport missed a simple overhead smash, to capture her second sydney title after winning in 1997 and condemn Davenport to her second straight loss in the Sydney final.

While Hingis was pushed all the way by Davenport, Hewitt had a far easier time in his match beating Norman in just 84 minutes and said he was feeling confident about his chances in Melbourne.

"I’ve been getting better and better with each match that I’ve played over the last two weeks and it’s nice to cap it off with a tournament win," Hewitt said.

"I felt like I’m really starting to hit the ball well and i think I can take a lot of confidence about beating a guy ranked number four in the world going into the Australian Open."

Hewitt, 19, broke Norman for the first time in the 10th game with a sizzling forehand winner to take the first set in 51 minutes then raced to a 5-0 lead in the second.

Norman, showing signs of tiredness after his gruelling semifinal with Jonas Bjorkman the previous day, rallied to hold serve for 1-5 and even had a break point in the next game but failed to convert his last chance as Hewitt captured his seventh career title.

"My legs weren’t moving very good today but I feel like my game is coming together even though I lost," the Swede said.

"Lleyton played a good match, he’s very solid. If you’re going to beat him you have to play very well." (REUTERS)

Hewitt wins Sydney international

SYDNEY, Jan 13: Australian teen-ager Lleyton Hewitt successfully defended his Sydney international title by beating Swede Magnus Norman 6-4 6-1 in today’s final.

Hewitt captured his seventh career title with a comprehensive victory over the world number four in just 84 minutes.

The 19-year-old broke Norman in the 10th game with a sizzling forehand winner to take the first set in 51 minutes then won the next five games in a row to lead 5-0 in the second.

Top seed Norman held serve for 1-5 and had a break point in the next game but was unable to convert as the world number seven took the match and the title. (REUTERS)

Leander, Nirupama fail to qualify for Australian Open

NEW DELHI, Jan 13: Indian hopes in the Australian Open singles were dashed today when Leander Paes and Nirupama Vaidyanathan bowed out from the third round of qualifying tournament after putting up a spirited fight against higher-rated rivals at Melbourne Park.

Paes fell to Marcus Ondruska of South Africa 6-3 5-7 3-6 while Nirupama was edged out 5-7 6-2 2-6 by France’s Alexandra Fusai in the final round of the qualifiers.

Paes started superbly and won the first set 6-3 but the Indian failed to keep up the tempo and lost a closely fought second set 5-7, according to official website of Australian Open.

He could not put up much fight in the decider and lost 3-6 in the match that lasted for nearly two and half hours.

Paes, who defeated Justin Bower of the United States 6-3 6-4 in the second round yesterday, was in total command in the first set against an error-prone Ondruska.

He blasted two aces and 12 winners and pocketed the set despite a large number of unforced errors and low first serve percentage. But Ondurska was impressive on both these counts.

Paes’ game fell apart after the first set and he started committing unforced errors. He served badly in the second set and committed 11 unforced errors compared to six by Ondurska.

The Indian had four break points but could convert only one. Ondruska on the other hand got three chances to break his rival and succeeded on two occasions, and that proved sufficient for a 7-5 victory for the South African.

Nirupama, the only Indian women to win a round in a Grand Slam Tournament, also had a good chance to win. She went down fighting in the first set and then recovered superbly to win the second set. But the exertion proved too much as she also went down tamely in the decider.

She committed a large number of unforced errors (46-33) and that ultimately proved her downfall against the Frenchwoman who also committed three double-faults to none by the Indian.

Nirupama, who reached the second round here in 1998, was erratic from the start though she served better than Fusai in the first set. She also unleashed more winners but her inability to capitalise on the crucial break points cost her the set.

The 25-year-old Indian was more consistent in the second set and also cut down the unforced errors. She served two aces against none by her rival and broke her rival twice to wrap up a 6-2 win. (PTI)

Bindra wins gold in Nissan Cup

NEW DELHI, Jan 13: Olympian rifle-shooter Abhinav Bindra created a flutter by beating European champion Muhaupt of Germany and winning the gold medal in the Nissan Cup RIAC-2001 air rifle shooting championship in Luxembourg.

Bindra, who won silver in the Luxembourg event on Thursday, tallied a total score of 697.1 in the European air rifle event yesterday to emerge a worthy winner.

The 18-year-old Indian, who became the youngest shooter at the Sydney Olympic games, shot rounds of 99, 98, 99, 100, 100 and 99 to take a lead of three points over the German.

Muhaupt shot 592 in the semifinal to Bindra’s 595 and the German went on to score 694.1 in the final. Third place went to a shooter from France with a total score of 688.

Bindra’s 595/600 was just one point off his junior world record achieved in Munich last year, according to information received from National Rifle Association of India here today.

Bindra’s success makes him the first Indian to beat a current European champion.

Muhaupt and Bindra had a face-off when the two got engaged in a stiff competition at the shooting hopes competition in Plazen, the Czech Republic in July last year. The German had then scored a win by 0.8 points.

By shooting 697.1, Bindra also equalled his own personal best achieved by finishing fourth in the Munich World Cup last year where he had the world record with a score of 596/600.

The Indian will be competing in the third and final round of competition, which also has on offer the ‘best shooters award of RIAC’.(PTI)
