Jammu organisations flay Govt for power crisis Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU,
Jan 10:
Various political, social and trade organisations have
severely criticised the Government for worst power crisis
in the Supporting the students for launching agitation the activists of these organisations have said that they are also compelled by the ruling NC Government to resort to the agitational path. Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh in an emergency meeting held here today, discussed the on going agitation of the ABVP activists. General secretary Nand Kishore, state secretary Harbans Choudhary and Finance secretary-Karnail Chand also attended the meeting. The members in one voice condemned the State Government for its acts and causing injustice to Jammu region. They said with the coming of new Power Minister, the power situation has further deteriorated. The people are facing severe harassment. "Enough is Enough, we will fully support the students and other Jammu organisations for this cause," the BMS activists added. They also demanded that illegal admission of the 55 students of Prime Medical College to Govt Medical College Jammu and Srinagar Medical Colleges be immediately quashed. Hardware Paints & Sanitary Dealers Association Jammu strongly criticised Power Development Department for imposing additional power cuts on rotational curtailment of 11 hours a day. The members said that in chilling cold the people are facing lot of problems. Studies of the students are worst hit due to it while theft cases have also increased due to darker nights. Hotelier and tourism business has also affected. The Government has no right to ask for full recovery of power tariff as it has failed to provide continuous power supply. It further said that if Government can not handle the crisis, then it has not right to stay. The Government should go ahead for privatisation of power. Panjtirthi Mohalla Sudhar Committee, in a meeting held here today under the chairmanship of Shatrughan Jamwal, condemned the Jammu leaders especially BJP MLAs for not raising the issue of additional power cuts in Jammu. The members alleged that NC Government was now crossing all the limits. They threatened that no NC minister will be allowed to move in the city and full support would be accorded to the students in their agitation against Power crisis and illegal MBBS admissions. Meanwhile, Recognised School Association in a meeting held here today expressed serious concern over the increased power curtailment during the peak of the academic session. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Shiv Kumar Sharma. Rameshwar Mengi, general secretary of the Association said that PDD authorities instead of punishing its inefficient staff is harassing the citizens/ consumers of Jammu who are regularly paying revenue. The thieves in the department should be brought to book and if Government fails to manage the affair it should go for privatisation. |
Hurriyat
not sole representative of Jammu and Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Jan 10: The newly formed Jammu and Kashmir Peoples United Front president and freedom fighter Sheikh Abdul Rashid today challenged the credibility of All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) to claim themselves as the only representatives of people of Jammu and Kashmir. Talking to mediapersons here today, Sheikh Rashid said Hurriyat is only confined to Kashmir valley while it has no base in Jammu region. He demanded that National Conference (NC) which has championed for the cause of Kashmiri people and remained a front runner in Quit Kashmir movement be also included in dialogue. Besides, the other political parties like Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and representatives of other political groups be also included in the proposed dialogue on Kashmir. Making a scathing attack on the Hurriyat leadership he alleged they are enjoying every comfort of life and their wards are studying in foreign countries while the common man in Kashmir has been put to many hardships and trouble. Criticising the role of Hurriyat leadership he blamed them for bringing the gun culture to the Kashmir valley and putting it on the path of destruction. Lambasting at Mr Yaseen Malik one of the senior leaders of Hurriyat and former chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Sheikh Rashid said during the early 1990 three armed militants on the instructions of Mr Malik intruded my house to kidnap me. But it was due to my good luck and grace of God that I managed to save myself from their clutches. Reiterating that Kashmir is an integral part of India, he however, strongly advocated for restoration of 1952 position. Lambasting on those favoring merger of Kashmir with Pakistan, he said they have deceived us in 1947 by sending intruders and annexing a portion of our State forcibly. Moreover, Kashmiris can not adjust themselves with the feudal lords of Pakistan who possess hundreds of kanals of land. Extending full support to peace initiative of Prime Minister, Mr A B Vajpayee he said unlike Pakistan, India is a peaceful country which wants peace. He also announced the team of office bearers of his Party which include Messrs Sukhdev Singh and Farooq Katoch general secretaries, Farooq Katoch, Raju Sandhu, Sameual Gill, Vijay Lakhotra, S K Gupta, Rajesh Gupta, Ch Nadeem, Ms Laila Khalid, Dr Vijay Sharma, B D Thapa, Anil Gupta and Sunit Singh as secretary J&K, provincial president, general secretary Jammu province, provincial secretary, publicity secretary, P A to president, joint secretary state, press secretary convener, district president Jammu and district president Udhampur respectively. Besides he nominated Ms Rifat Ara Asad, chairman Womens Youth Wing, Ms Razia Begum as vice chairman, Ms Taseen Farhat as political secretary and Ms Insha as publicity secretary. Sheikh Zaffar Iqbal was nominated chairman of the Youth Wing while Rameshwar Singh Jamwal will be its vice chairman, Rashid Malik as publicity secretary and Mushtaq Ahmed Khandey as general secretary. |
Voice of
People By Mohinder Verma Is issuing warnings only the job of the Jammu Muncipality? This question looms large over the authorities of Government agency which is supposed to check the menace of encroachments. If one goes through the number of warnings issued by the Jammu Muncipality and intensity of encroachments in City of Temples, it can be guaged that the said Government agency has only indulged in issuing threats to encroachers, than taking any action against those who have illegally occupied the footpaths, pavements and public places. The JM authorities have seemingly thought that there job is only to issue warning than taking action against such un-lawful activities. Though the JM is making tall claims that it has been able to completely control encroachments in many bazars yet the facts remain undisclosed as there were hardly any footpaths and pavements which are not encroached by the vendors and shopkeepers. It has been observed that besides the habitual encroachers, some allotees of the Muncipality too have extended their Khokhas and shops unauthorisidely on the main roads leading to traffic jams and public nuisance but the Jammu Muncipality continued to pay blind eye towards such activities. The encroachment menace is upto such an extent in the certain markets that even the pedestrians feel it uncomfortable while walking on the road. Some Rehariwalas have installed their Reharies permanently not on the roadsides but on the road. Moreover, the encroachments have also been leading to the fatal road accidents. Though the intensity of encroachments is more in the walled city yet the suburbs are not spared by the encroachers thus circumventing law. It is easy to name a market with encroached roads and footpaths than without encroachment. Already narrow bazars and roads, further congested by the encroachers like shopkeepers and vendors by circumventing law, have apparently turned the city of temples into the city of encroacherscourtesy Jammu Muncipality. The menace has not only marred the beauty of Jammu city but can also prove a security hazard since the anti-national elements can plant explosive devices in congested areas taking advantage of the encroachments. The encroachments in bazars like Gali Khilonian, Fattu Chougan, Raghunath Bazar, Pacca Danga, Purani Mandi and Raj Tilak Road is enough to prove incapability of JM to tackle this menance. Taking advantage of slackness of Muncipality authorities, the shopkeepers keep goods hanging in front of their shops with immunity from the law and least caring about the difficulties, they are creating for the general public. Proving that Jammu Muncipality is a lion without teeth, the vendors and Rehariwalas and even shopkeepers have turned the footpaths and pavements as business hub. What to talk of footpaths at other places even the same at Indira Chowk near Muncipal Park is being used by the encroachers right under the nose of JM. The allegations of taking Hafta by JM officials from encroachers seems to be a truth since during the last one year no one from JM bothered to remove these vendors where padentrains find it impossible to walk on footpaths meants for them to walk safely. Taking it lightly that encroachment is unlawfull activity and law could be invoked to clear the same, some shopkeepers in the New Plots area said that they have fixed Hafta with the JM employees to remain in their good books and to enjoye immunity from the law. Keeping in view the intensity of encroachment in the Jammu, the Jammu Muncipality should become active instead of issuing warnings so that people can have respite from the encroachers and the thinking of the visitors that Jammu is a city of encroachers can be changed. When contacted Mr Pawan Kotwal, Administrator Jammu Muncipality said that their anti-encroachment drive is continued process and claimed that in few areas like Gandhi Nagar near Green Belt Park the encroachment has been completely removed. "The encroachment could not be completely removed without the active cooperation of people", the Administrator asserted and said that there were a number of areas where vendors were removed but they came back after somedays. When asked about the help of Police in removing encroachment, he informed that JM authorities have been continously receiving support of police in drives against encroachments. On the whole, these claims of the Jammu Muncipality prove to be of lesser significance and its drive seems to be a failure as how come that these encroachers emerge out despite the fact that action under |

Addressing a press conference here, state president Mohammad Shafi Qureshi said the reported decision of the Centre to issue passports to only some Hurriyat leaders had created doubts about its sincerity. When asked if the visit would help to silence the guns and resolve the Kashmir issue, Mr Qureshi said "the Hurriyat leaders should be going with a definite agenda". The sincerity of the people who were trying to restore normalcy should not be doubted, he added. About the Congress policy on Kashmir, the former Union Minister said the party would support any move that could help restore peace in the state. He criticised the BJP led NDA Government at the Centre for not taking into confidence the other political parties on the Kashmir issue.
