Action awaits Afridi for suspect bowling LAHORE, Jan 10: Aggressive opener and leg spinner Shahid Afridi has been reported for a suspect bowling action but as yet has not been suspended from international cricket. Afridi, was reported by match referee Barry Jarman during the three-match one-day international series against England. Afridi is among the three bowlers along with Bangladeshs Mohd. Rafique and Naimur Rahmanm, who have been reported to the International Cricket Council (ICC). Afridi, who was not included for the first one-dayer, staged a dramatic comeback capturing five wickets in the second one-dayer while also scoring 61. In the third and final one dayer, he picked up one wicket. According to media reports here, Afridi was reported during the second one-day international though the director of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCD) Brig Munawwar Rana said it is not clear in which match the referee found his bowling action suspect. Afridi is the second Pakistani bowler to be found with a suspect bowling action. Last year, Shoaib Akhtar was suspended for eight days before he was cleared to play in one-day internationals. Video tapes of Afridis bowling action have been sent to the ICC and the PCB. Rana admitted that Barry Jarman had hinted to him during the series that he was going to report Afridis bowling action. "We received the formal information from the ICC before the start of the year." He made it clear that not all the delivery actions of Afridi were under scrutiny. Only his faster ones are said to be illegitimate. (UNI) |

Jadeja too stays away, sends written statement NEW DELHI, Jan 10: Sports Ministrys exercise of asking for explanations from three indicted cricketers as to why Arjuna Awards conferred on them should not be withdrawn, proved to be a non-starter with none of them appearing before the one-man committee set up for the purpose. After Manoj Prabhakar and Mohd Azharuddin stayed away from the panel of Joint Secretary J P Singh last two days, Ajay Jadeja too did not turn up today to reply to the show-cause notice. Singh however said he had received written replies from all three of them. I have received written explanations from all three players. Jadeja will not come now, Singh told reporters. Azharuddin, Jadeja and Prabhakar have been found guilty of match-fixing practices by CBI and Cricket Boards internal inquiry, conducted by its Anti-Corruption Commissioner K Madhavan, and Sports Ministry said it was considering withdrawing national honours bestowed on them. Singh declined to disclose the contents of the letters received from the three former players saying he had not read the letters yet. He also refused to reveal the future course of action by the Government. Azharuddin, Prabhakar and Jadeja were conferred Arjuna Awards in 1986, 1993 and 1997 respectively. In his letter to the ministry, Jadeja asked for the Arjuna Award rule book, a source close to the cricketer told PTI yesterday. Jadeja has recently written a letter in this regard as Madhavan Committee report was made available to him only last week, the source said. (PTI) |
Kallis takes injury-hit South Africa to victory PAARL (SOUTH AFRICA), Jan 10: Jacques Kallis hit an unbeaten century as South Africa overcame an alarming injury list and gained their eighth successive limited overs win when they beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the third one-day international at Boland Park here yesterday. The win achieved with seven balls to spare - in which Herschelle Gibbs made only one to add to his duck in the second test last week on his recall after serving a six month ban for his part in the Hansie Cronje matchfixing scandal - gave the home side a 3-0 lead in the six-match series. Faced with a challenging target of 248, South Africa were set on the way to victory by Boeta Dippenaar, who made 65, and Jacques Kallis, who finished 100 not out, put on 111 for the second wicket. Jonty Rhodes then gave the innings crucial impetus as he made a sparkling unbeaten 75 off 59 balls. Earlier, Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya made a return to form, hitting 66 in a Sri Lankan total of 247 for four. The left-handed Jayasuriya put on 110 for the first wicket with Romesh Kaluwitharana, who went on to make top score of 83. Kallis, who received treatment for a bruised right hand after dropping Kaluwitharana, took his right hand off his bat several times early in his innings but appeared to be batting more comfortably as his innings progressed. Kallis played the anchor role for his team after Gibbs was trapped lbw in the third over. It took him 88 balls to reach fifty with only one four but he accelerated towards the end. He hit a huge six over square leg off a Jayasuriya full toss in the 48th over and finished the match with his third four in the next over from Vaas to bring up his sixth one-day international century off 139 balls. Dippenaar made his 65 off 100 balls with five fours, while Rhodes raced to his fourth consecutive one-day international half-century off 42 balls with four fours. Jayasuriya wore the look of a relieved man as he batted his way into some sort of form having performed poorly on the tour, scoring only ten runs in the first two one-day internationals and 34 runs in four innings in the first two tests. But he struck the ball Crisply yesterday, hitting seven fours and a six in an 83-ball innings. Kaluwitharana, who faced 117 balls and hit eight fours, was dropped four times, including difficult caught and bowled chances to Shaun Pollock when he had 11 and Kallis when he was on 30. He was dropped twice off Nicky Boje on 81, by Gibbs at midwicket and Alan Dawson at wide long-on. Dawson, 31, a late replacement after the withdrawal of Allan Donald (abscess on right elbow) and Roger Telemachus (neck spasm), had an unhappy return to international cricket conceding 58 runs in nine overs and limped off with a strained right hamstring. It was a further injury blow to a side that has been plagued by injuries in recent days. (APF) |

NEW DELHI, Jan 10: Bharat Petroleum lived on the edge before a missed stroke in the tie-break by the Punjab and Sind Bank helped them to retain the title with a 7-6 verdict in the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hockey Tournament here today. In a grim battle for supremacy, BPCL and PSB fought for more than an hour but only managed 2-2 deadlock at the end of regulation time and the extra-time also failed to end the stalemate forcing the match into the tie-breaker. Ajitpal Singh missed the first stroke and that cost PSB dearly as BPCL were on target with all the five chances for a 5-4 tie-break score. In a repeat of last years final, BPCL raced in to lead in the fifth minute when left-half Ravi Naiker connected a pass from full-back Ajay Kumar and effected a reverse hit into the far corner of the net. PSB in a desperate bid to equalise, stepped up the pressure and the game got confined to the midfield for the next 55 minutes with BPCL beefing up their defence. The match turned alive and fortunes fluctuated towards the end of regulation period with three goals being scored in the last ten minutes. PSB forward Dominik launched a blitzkrieg in the 61st minute when he dribbled with lightning speed and smashed into the goal for the equaliser leaving the rival custodian stranded. BPCL once again went into the lead when centre-half Sabu Varkey scored a field goal deflecting an Amar Aiyamma pass to make it 2-1. A complacent petroleum team was shocked when the bankers overcame the disparity within two minutes as Saurab Bishnoi converted the fourth penalty corner to make it 2-2 at the end of the regulation period. The extra-time was marked by heightened attacks and counter-attacks by both the teams. But the golden goal proved elusive and the status-quo remained. In the tie-breaker, BPCL custodian Joaquim effected a crucial save lunging to his right to ward off a sharp shot by Sabu Virkey which proved to be PSBs undoing. The petroleum lads, however, found the gap with all their five chances to finish the tally at 5-4 and an overall 7-6 verdict to wrap up the match and the tournament. (PTI) |
