J&K inviting overseas importers to boost
handicraft exports

Excelsior Correspondent

Jammu Jan 4: The J&K Government is planning a buyer-seller meet for handicrafts in May this year at Srinagar to invite overseas importers to visit the State and procure the goods directly from the artisans here. In the first instance, it is proposed to invite a group of ten reputed buyers for bulk purchasing from U.S A , Canada and Europe to visit the Valley for a period of 3 days to have inter-action with the artisans of the State. The selection of the overseas buyers would be made with the help and assistance of Indian Mission Abroad and International Agencies like UNCTAD.

Stating this here today, the Industries and Commerce Minister, Dr Mustafa Kamal said that this step is contemplated as a part of State’s new strategy for marketting its increased handicrafts production which ‘has touched by now a high of Rs 600 crores, of which, Rs 400 crore worth merchandise has export potential. The strategy is aimed at strengthening of the conventional markets as well as exploration of new markets by seeking export promotion measures, the Minister added. He said organising such a type of Buyer-seller meet has been necessitated because due to disturbed situation in J&K, the importers from abroad did not visit the State and are still avoiding to come here which has adversely affected small artisans and manufactures who have become dependent entirely upon traders and exporters located outside the State.

The proposed buyer-seller meet will encourage the overseas buyers to visit the State and offer opportunity to artisans and overseas importers to interact with each other which will result in product promotion and design development besides increasing the market segment.

Dr Kamal said that financial assistance for the proposed meet would be sought from the Centre under approved scheme of the office of Development Commissioner, Handicrafts as well as Export Promotion Council Handicrafts. The J&K Handicrafts ( S&E) Corporation will act as organiser/ facilitator and render service in the shape of arranging the meet, negotiation, documentation, export service and realization of proceeds for the proposed buyer-seller meet.

$ 65.5 WB loan for Kerala rural water supply project

NEW DELHI, Jan 4: The World Bank today extended a 65.5 million dollar (about Rs 300 crore) loan for the Kerala rural water supply and environmental sanitation project.

The credit is interest free with 35 years maturity and 10 years grace period, an official statement said here.

Agreements relating to the project were signed between the World Bank, Government of India and Kerala Government here.

While Adarsh Kishore, Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs signed the agreement on behalf of Union Government, Elias George, Secretary, Irrigation and Water Supply, signed on behalf of Kerala Government.

James Verghese, Executive Director, Kerala Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, and Edwin R Lim, Country Director India, World Bank, signed on behalf of their respective organisations.

While the Kerala Government has decided to decentralise rural water supply service delivery to gram panchayats, the objective of the current project is to improve the quality of rural water supply and environmental sanitation services.

The project would introduce a new service delivery mechanism through a partnership between Kerala Rural Water Supply Agency, Gram Panchayats, beneficiary groups and Non-Governmental Organisations.

The project would be implemented in 80 gram panchayats in district of Palakkad, Mallapuram, Thrissur and Kozhikode. The project would also focus on tribal population in nine village panchayats.

The project also has a national component for which about three million dollar has been earmarked for assisting the Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Supply Mission in promoting its national rural water supply and environmental sanitation reform agenda in India.

The project includes capacity building of Kerala rural water supply agency, gram panchayats, beneficiary groups and the NGOs involved, community development especially mobilising women and building infrastructure.

Kerala Government has decided to empower beneficiary groups to make investment decisions and independently manage project funds. It has also drafted a ground water bill to withdraw agricultural power subsidy to paddy farmers, the release added. (PTI)

TCS to become separate public company

CHENNAI, Jan 4: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the global software consultancy unit of the Tata Group, will be made a separate company this year.

Top TCS Executives told UNI that according to the current proposals, TCS which is now a division of the Tata Sons Ltd, the holding company of the Tata Group, would be made into a public limited company in the third quarter of the current fiscal.

TCS, which is the country’s largest software company with a turnover of Rs 2100 crore last year, netted a profit of Rs 600 crore — the highest profit centre of the Tata Group.

Tata Group had so far been resisting proposals to transform TCS into a separate company, while some of India’s software companies like Infosys had gone global with their Nasdaq presence.

TCS is not even available in the Indian capital market. Once the company goes public, its staffers are expected to be provided with ESOPs (Employees Stock Option Plans) that bind employee loyalty, the sources added. (UNI)

Time dotcom IPO faces cool welcome: Analysts

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 4: Malaysian mobile phone firm time dotcom’s upcoming IPO — at nearly 500 million dollars the country’s biggest ever — is likely to get the cold shoulder from investors when it comes to market in early 2001.

The thrice-delayed Initial Public Offer, first slated for September last year, may finally hit the market a little too late, analysts said today

"Sad to say, circumstances have changed," said Yee Yang Chien, Research Head at HLG Capital.

"Time is going to the market under a different set of economic and market scenarios. The take-up rate will likely disappoint."

Analysts who once rated the IPO as a highlight that could bring the bulls back to market have now changed their tune.

"This is a huge offer. With the market so soft, it won’t be easy to digest. The underwriters will end up holding the baby," said T S Pong, Research Head at Jupiter Securities.

A total of 572 million shares at 3.30 ringgit a piece will be sold to raise 1.89 billion ringgit, or 497 million dollars, mostly to repay debts owed by time’s parent, Time Engineering BHD Teng. (REUTERS)
