Tendulkar stands amid ruins as Warne,
McGrath plunder India

MUMBAI, Feb 27: The cracks in the Indian batting order were exposed once more as little master Sachin Tendulkar waged a lone battle against unrelenting Australian attack of paceman Glenn McGrath and leggie Shane Warne who ensured that India were dismissed shortly after tea at 176 in their first innings of the first cricket test here today.

The 76-run knock by Tendulkar was the saving grace as the Indian batsmen, including S Ramesh (2), Rahul Dravid (9), Saurav Ganguly (8), Ajit Agarkar (0), Harbhajan Singh (0) and Rahul Sanghvi (2), queued their way to pavilion without being able to muster the double-digit mark.

In reply, Australia rode on their luck through some debatable umpiring decisions to be 49 for one for the loss of Michael Slater (10), who was removed by speedster Ajit Agarkar after having survived a David Shepherd decision to a caught behind appeal off the same bowler.

Matthew Hayden (25) and Justin Langer (10) were at the crease when the stumps were drawn.

While the triumverate of McGrath, Jason Gillespie and Damien Fleming justified their skipper’s decision to go for pace by bowling a remarkable line and length, Warne with four scalps in his kitty could not have hoped for a better revenge after the punishment meted out to him during the three-day match against Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai.

Put in to bat, India found the going tough on a green-topped wicket which gave ample movement to the ball.

Mcgrath bowled a perfect line, 19 runs off 19 overs and three wickets speaks for itself. The pace spearhead drew first blood for the Aussies when an attempted S Ramesh hook landed in the safe gloves of Adam Gilchrist.

Rahul Dravid and opener Shiv Sunder Das tried to keep the scoreboard moving before Dravid was caught by Gilchrist off Damien Fleming in the latter’s second spell for nine runs.

Soon after, Jason Gillespie had Das caught in the slips by Hayden for 14 and once skipper Saurav Ganguly holed out to Hayden off Warne for eight just before lunch, it was always going to be an uphill task for the Indians.

Tendulkar blossomed after lunch hitting Fleming for three fours in an over and then pulled Warne to the mid-wicket fence twice.

Tendulkar and V V S Laxman (20) added 75 runs for the fifth wicket off 18.4 overs in 78 minutes before McGrath dealt two body blows from which the Indians never recovered.

He had Laxman caught by Ricky Ponting at slips for 20 and then scalped the prized wicket of Tendulkar having him caught by Gilchrist as the batsman attempted to drive a wide ball without moving his feet after scoring 76.

Agarkar joined Mongia after Tendulkar’s departure but the lanky Mumbai all-rounder could manage only a nought, his sixth duck off the last six test innings against Australia.

Agarkar was out caught and bowled by Warne, who also sent back Javagal Srinath (12) and Harbhajan Singh (0) and Gillespie polished off the tail when he had last man Rahul Sanghvi for 2. Mongia remained unbeaten on 26. (PTI)

Boycott set to coach in Pak in May

KARACHI (PAKISTAN), Feb 27: Former England opener Geoffrey Boycott has confirmed his availability for a second coaching trip to Lahore’s National Cricket Academy.

The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Tauqir Zia told Reuters that boycott is due on may 21 for a week-long stay, and could be back again towards the end of the year.

The PCB has asked boycott to visit Pakistan in September-October during a tour by New Zealand to guide senior players and to return to the Lahore Academy.

"He has confirmed his availability for one week. He will inform us about his tour plans in September-October later," he said.

Boycott’s first coaching stint, lasting nearly two weeks earlier this month, cost 30,000 pounds and was covered by a sponsorship deal with McdDnalds. The fast food chain is once again likely to sponsor the Yorkshireman.

Zia said the PCB have also hired Essex Curator Andy Atkinson who will prepare pitches all over the country.

"If he completes soil testings of the pitches in time, we expect that he would prepare surfaces for the home series against New Zealand."

New Zealand are scheduled to pay a return visit in September-October for three tests and as many one-day internationals.

Atkinson, currently hired by Sri Lanka, was behind the success of the ICC Knock-out Tournament in Kenya in October last year. He is on the International Cricket Council panel of curators. (REUTERS)

Junior Fencing Championship

BANGALORE, Feb 27: Uttar Pradesh spoiled Manipur’s party by winning the boys foil team event, thus preventing a clean sweep, in the VIII National Junior Fencing Championship here today.

Uttar Pradesh pipped Punjab 2-1 to bag the foil team event. Manipur boys collected sabre gold drubbing Punjab.

In the individual events also, Manipur fencers dominated with two girls entering the finals in epee and Shivanand making the title round in foil.

In the epee, Reorita Devi of Manipur entered the finals with a spin of the coin favouring her over Vinayatha of Andhra Pradesh. At the end of the extra one minute bout, the score was tied at 4-all. Tingku Devi beat Prabhjot Kaur of Punjab 5-3.

Yesterday, Manipur had bagged boys epee and girls epee and foil team golds.

In the boys team foil event, Somesh Gupta defeated Kamalpreet Singh (5-2) and Amandeep Verma made it one-all, accounting for Lavkush Kumar (1-5). Sanjay Sahani quelled a strong challenge from Sudeep Singh (5-4) to give gold for Uttar Pradesh over Punjab. Manipur and Karnataka settled for the bronze.

Megha whipped lucky (5-2) and Chingsomba beat Ajit Singh (5-4) to help Manipur retain the title in sabre team event. (UNI)

Khel.com Senior National Snooker Championship
Forenoon matches cancelled due to power failure

CHENNAI, Feb 27: The forenoon session matches of the 67th Khel.Com Senior National Snooker Championship was cancelled due to a major power failure even as three players qualified for the knock-out pre-quarterfinals here today.

After completing junior billiards and snooker, ladies billiards and snooker and senior billiards, the senior snooker event which is now on, is the last item on the agenda and it will bring the curtains down on the month long tournament on March three.

India No.5 Sarang Shroff of Maharashtra, put behind his stunning 2-4 loss at the hands of local cueist M C Manoj last night, to become the first player to qualify for the last 16 stage from Group E. In his last league match, Sarang, came up with his guns blazing as he decimated last year’s junior billiards winner Rushab Thukral of Delhi 71-48, 67-20, 67-40, 58-3 to complete his engagements in style.

In Group G junior billiards champion Manan Chandra of Delhi and Md.Asim of Bengal from Group H were the other two players to make the grade. In their last league matches, Manan defeated seasoned Antim Singhi of Railways 58-27, 15-59, 67-21, 77-12, 71-3 while Md.Asim dropped two frames before getting the better of Chirag Ramakrishnan of Tamil Nadu 56-38, 64-62, 29-69, 55-27, 14-61, 58-11 to maintain a clean slate in the group.

Perhap’s yesterday’s loss had motivated Sarang, who had played in Asian and world championship, to bring out his best. Potting with Elan, he made Rishab sulking at one corner, completing a swift demolition in a methodical way.

Following power failure, the players were allowed to play without the mandatory waist coat for the match. As the heat started telling on the players and officials in the playing hall at wild west, Spencer Plaza, due to non-working of the air-conditioning unit, the organisers decided to call off the forenoon session matches.

Following are the results :

Sher-e-Kashmir Gold Cup Football
J&K Police, Fire Services sail into quarter-finals

Excelsior Sports Correspondent

JAMMU, Feb 27: Jammu and Kashmir Police and J&K Fire Services today sailed into quarter-finals of the Sher-e-Kashmir Gold Cup Football Tournament beating their opponents in the tie-breaker at Mini-Stadium, Parade, here.

Close contests were witnessed in both the matches as all the four departmental teams put best of their efforts to take lead against their opponents. Even then, they could not decide their fate in the field and the final decisions came only after tie-breaker rules were applied.

In the second match of the day, the Jammu and Kashmir Police held fighting 5-Sikh Regimental Centre to a goaless draw in the match time. It was followed by the tie-breaker, wherein, Police goal-keeper Sonu did a good job and helped his side to beat 5-Sikh by five goals to three.

From J&K Police, Adil Qadir, Ajay Kumar, Mushtaq Ahmed and Riaz Ahmed were the successful shooters. For 5-Sikh Regimental Centre, Malkiat Singh, Manjinder Sigh and Kuldeep Singh scored goals, while Sukhjinder Singh’s shot went out of the goal and the last free shot taken by the goal-keeper P S Bhullar was well saved by Sonu.

Earlier, in the match time, Policemen comparatively made some good moves, especially in the second half. But, their poor finishing and an alert goal-keeping by P S Bhullar ended the tie in a goalless draw in the stipulated time.

Soon after the beginning of the second half, J&K Police forwards made two magnificent unsuccessful moves. On first occasion, two J&K forwards, finding the open space, dribbled the ball amidst chase by the 5-Sikh Regiment lone defender from the centreline, but lost control over the ball when reached the inner circle.

Within a few minutes, another calculated move was initiated by the Policemen from the left flank of the goal, but this time tall and alert 5-Sikh goalkeeper diverted a powerful corner kick out of the goal.

Meanwhile, for the first time in this tournament, the referees’ judgement was questioned by the spectators and the veteran footballers on red card shown to two players from either side.

As per the eyewitness account, Yassir Ahmed of Police hit on the head of B Sill of Sikh Regimental Centre in the 55th minute after some verbal arguments. As Sill little cared about the Yassir action, centre referee, David Masih, reacting to the indiscipline, immediately showed red card to cop ‘misbehaviour’. The action of the referee was strongly opposed by the other members of the team both playing as well as resting.

Paying little heed to the objections and outcry, David was strict to his decision and directed Yassir to leave the field. But, in the meantime table referee, Nissar Ahmed, who also belongs to J&K Police, reportedly asked David to show red card to Sill too. And on the direction of the table referee, David did acted accordingly and asked both of them to leave the field.

Now, Jassir Ahmed cannot play his next match because of the red card shown to him.

In the first match of the day, Jammu and Kashmir Fire Services outplayed PAP Patiala 5-3 in tie-breaker. In the game time, the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

First goal was scored by Charanjit Singh for PAP in the 25th minute. The lead was equalised by the Fire Services in the 45th minute when Sonu Mikal scored a brilliant goal.

Following the equaliser, PAP slightly changed their strategy and they succeeded in taking lead in the 55th minute through Surinder Pal. In the 65th minute, Fire Services again levelled the score ending it 2-2 draw.

Later, in the tie-breaker, PAP Patiala could not show their skill and went down 3-1. For Fire Services Mustafa, Bashir and Ashiq scored, while Sukhpal was the lone scorer from PAP, Patiala.

Today’s matches were officiated by Nissar Ahmed, Nazir Ahmed, David Masih, Vishwamitra and Sunil Dimple.

The ongoing tournament is being organised by the Sher-e-Kashmir People’s Association headed by S M Gill, MLC, in memory of late Chief-Minister, Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah.

Fiery Hewitt storms into second round of Open Tennis

SAN JOSE (California), Feb 27: Fiery Australian Lleyton Hewitt celebrated his first match since turning 20 by destroying Canadian Sebastian Lareau 6-3 6-1 to storm into the second round of the Sybase Open Tennis Tournament yesterday.

"It was a nice little birthday celebration but it will be even better if I’m still here on the weekend," said Hewitt, who ended 2000 ranked seventh in the world.

"I look at my achievements since I’ve been on tour and it’s been fantastic. Considering the pressure I’ve been under since I won my first tournament in my hometown at 16, I think I’ve delivered pretty good."

Joining Hewitt in the second round were sixth-seeded American Jan-Michael Gambill and eighth seed Greg Rusedski of Britain.

Rusedski, coming off the loss of his opening match in memphis last week, moved into the second round with a 6-1 7-6 (7-4) victory over Israel’s Harel Levy.

But fifth seed Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands was upset 6-4 6-4 by Australia’s Wayne Arthurs.

Top seed Andre Agassi, a five-time champion here, will play his opening match Tuesday against South Korea’s Hyung-Taik Lee.

The second-seeded Hewitt, who turned 20 on Saturday, used an impressive all-court attack to Subdue Lareau, passing him at will and pummeling him from the baseline.

"I was really pleased with the way I played after the first part of the first set," Hewitt said. "He came out firing on his serves but once I got in a groove on my return, he wasn’t sure whether to serve-volley or stay back. I put a little doubt in his mind."

Looking for first indoor title

Hewitt, a 2000 U S Open semifinalist, has seven career titles but has never won a crown indoors. The long-haired speedster said taking the San Jose crown would be a fine place to start.

"I never played an indoor tournament until I got on tour but I’ve had some big wins over players indoors — like beating Sampras, Henman, Kafelnikov. I’m getting used to it. It’s not like I lack confidence indoors."

Hewitt, who was upset by Carlos Moya in the third round of the Australian Open, said better overall results at the Grand Slams is one of his goals.

"Getting to the final four of the U S Open was a huge stepping stone for me," said Hewitt, who was upset in the first round of Wimbledon and fell in the fourth round of French Open last year. "It showed me that I had really stepped up".

"I feel confident that if I improve my serve and make it more of a weapon, I can compete with anyone on any surface."

Gambill survived a 6-3 6-7 6-3 struggle with Brazil’s Andre Sa, recovering after failing to win a point in the second-set tiebreaker.

"In the second set, I didn’t stick to my game plan," the 23-year-old Gambill said. "Instead of continuing to come in, I decided to stay back and grind it out.

"I can win matches that way, but I need to stay with my plan. I’m proud of myself that I forgot about the second set and was able to go point by point in third set and hit with more pace."

Gambill feels he is ready to join the game’s elite.

"I’ve improved a lot the last year," he said. "My volleys have improved 100 percent and I feel I can bring an all-round game to the court that will be effective on all surfaces.

"If I stay on the right track, I can be in the top 15 this year." (REUTERS)
