Stop blood shed

Sir

This is in reference to the 'innocent killings going on unabated in J&K State.' The brutal killings of 15 Bakerwals in Budhal Rajouri, the killings of 6 Sikhs in Mehjoor Nagar Srinagar and Fidayeen attack on PCR Srinagar - all these incidents open our eyes that inspite of the Prime Minister's bold initiative of declaring unilateral ceasefire in the State for peace, the spillage of innocent blood continues unabated. The Muslims, the Hindus and the Sikhs are equally suffering at the hands of so-called Jehadis or militants. The apprehensions are high that the attacks in future would be intensified and even the Prime Minister of India and the Home Minister of India are threatened for their lives.

Hurriyat, a separatist conglomerate are thinking of widening their base. Some are visiting Shankaracharya for initiating broader discussions, Shabir Shah, a separatist leader visiting Gujarat to express solidarity with the victims of 'Great Tragedy.'

If religion is a binding force for humanity, if it guides man to its last destiny and if it is a penance to purify one's body, mind and soul, then let the Hurriyat leaders come on a public plat-form and ask people to stop innocent, brutal, dastardly killings first here in the Valley in the interest of humanity. Let the spillage of innocent blood be stopped because enough is enough now.

Maintain plural character

Sir

Hari Om in his letter datred 6th February 2001 has claimed that the movement for trifurcation of the J&K state has the support of all the communities of the State. However, he has not clarified the stand of the main champions of trifurcation.

In no case RSS can claim to represent or inspire Muslims of Jammu or any other part of the country. In this context, the unanimous decision of all party seminar in Rajouri on 11-2-2001 which was addressed by Mr B R Puri can be cited.

The seminar unanimously rejected the move of trifurcation as it is a threat to the secular fabric of the state and country. It even threatens the secular identity of Jammu region. The best remedy, therefore, would be to accept the plural character of the state and work out for a system which ensures equitable share of political and economical power to all the regions and districts and communities of the State.

Seminar on Jitendra's work

Sir

Lot many thanks to the management of your paper for having published the bio-sketch of the leading light of the Dogri, poet Dr Jitendra Udhampuri in the magazine section of your esteemed paper of 21-1-2001. Otherwise one remains bereft of the existence of the local poetic genius.

The author of the bio-sketch also needs to be felicitated for having made a speaking narration of the both personal and the literary aspects of Dr Udhampuri. It is indeed beyond the scope of a common man like me to comment on the academic and the poetic heights attained by this poetic genius. But I would like to focus through your esteemed paper on some of the glaring achievements. The purpose is to address the authorities of the local radio station to hold an immediate 'Mehfil' with so that a comman man is benefitted with a more detailed account about the works of this pride of Jammu. Likewise the cultural academy would do justice to the Dogri literature to hold a seminar on some of his important works for the benefit of the budding Dogri scholars - that he has been author of the

i. first detailed history of Dogri literature;

ii. master piece of Dogri in the first single long poetry 'Chanani'.

iii. first Dogri epic 'Jitto' the great peasant martyr of Duggar;

iv. Sahitya Academy award winner poetry 'Ik Shehar Yaden Da' which is an outstanding contribution to Dogri literature;

v. several poems which have been translated into various Indian and foreign languages.

The suggested seminar would very much be desirable to be held exclusively for Dr Udhampuri's works different from the one that is proposed to be held in the middle of February 2001.

No negotiations under fire

Sir,

India and Israel are fundamentally in similar situations. Both nations face determined, armed and aggressive adversaries causing murders and destruction within their territories. Both are internally squabbling and bickering democracies lacking a majority government. Both face external pressures in their security policies.

But there is a huge difference. The Bush administration is in complete agreement with Israel regarding its policy of no negotiations under fire.

But the USA always insists that India have a dialogue with Pakistan and its Islamic terrorists. The only reason why any outsider can dare put pressure on us is because the Indian Government has shown that it does not value its citizens or its sovereignty.

If our Government starts valuing the lives of our citizens and army men, if our government starts retaliating in kind for every Pakistani terrorist attack, if our government starts showing that it cares for our independence, others will begin to understand. Nobody meddles with a self-respecting nation willing to actively defend itself. Look at Israel, China or even Pakistan.
