Bahutule scalps four but Waugh, Fleming force draw

MUMBAI, Feb 24: Mumbai leg spinner Sairaj Bahutule gave a real scare to the Australians when he scalped four wickets reducing the visitors to 80-6 before skipper Steve Waugh and Damien Fleming rescued them with patient batting to force a draw in the three-day cricket match here today.

A clash that Australians had billed as prestige match after having lost to the same opposition when they visited the sub-continent last time around, saw Ranji Trophy champions almost repeating their 1998 act.

Bahutule, who was not considered for the national team after being called to join the Chennai camp at the last minute, struck mighty blows as the Australians faced a challenging target of 317 off 55 overs when Mumbai declared their second innings for 191-8.

The visitors lived dangerously before Steve Waugh (34 not out) wasted 101 balls and Fleming gave his skipper able support with unbeaten 22 off 72 balls to wear out the remaining day at the Brabourne Stadium.

Waugh and Fleming’s 61-run seventh wicket partnership was the saving grace for the unofficial test champions who were restricted to 203 in their first innings after Mumbai had scored 328-9 declared in their first essay.

The post-lunch drama eclipsed the spin Wizard Shane Warne’s seven-wicket haul as he caused on the reckless Mumbai batsmen, who tried to score on every delivery to make the match interesting.

The home team, riding on a handy 125-run first innings lead, were in with a chance to win despite a late declaration by Mumbai skipper Samir Dighe.

The Australians were a bit unlucky in their second knock after Dighe declared at 191 for eight, 27 minutes after lunch with Warne warming up for the test starting on February 27.

The Aussies struggled once more against the turning ball and the world-beaters were reduced to a precarious 80-6.

Mathew Hayden was first to go when Dighe snapped him behind the stumps off Paras Mhambrey’s second over.

Opener Michael Slater (32 - 6x4) and left-handed Justin Langer, centurion in Nagpur, added 41 runs for the second wicket before slater was unlucky to be given out stumped by Dighe off Bahutule.

With Mark Waugh on the injured list and ruled out for the rest of the match, Ricky Ponting went in at number four but did not stay long.

Thereafter, Langer (18) and Adam Gilchrist both fell in quick succession to Bahutule and Mumbai saw a bright victory chance when they had Warne run out in the 32nd over off a direct throw by Robin Morris from mid-off.

However, Waugh, whose unbeaten 106 in the first innings staved off a follow-on,defended doggedly for two hours with Fleming for company.(PTI)
