J&K acquires ISP facility: Dr Kamal

JAMMU, Feb 20: Internet Service Provider (ISP) facility will be available through J&K SIDCO at Srinagar by end of March, 2001. This was disclosed at a meeting held at New Delhi yesterday. The Industries and Commerce, Minister, Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamal presided. Other who attended the meeting include Mr S L Zindal, Director General, Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), Mr M S Pandit, Principal Secretary, Industries & Commerce Department, Mr G Q Wani, Managing Director, SIDCO, Mr S K Aggarwal, Director, STPI, Noida and other officers of the STPI and the State Government.

Mr Zindal informed that orders for procurement of Server/Router required for this purpose have already been placed with a US firm and delivery is expected by 10th March, 2001. With the help of this equipment, it should be possible to provide about 200 internet connections immediately, which may be enhanced to about 10,000 connections and even more in a phased manner. However, for this purpose, the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India will have to provide necessary supporting ISDN lines.

Mr Zindal also narrated that the radio equipment and Mast will be installed at STP, Rangreth by end of March, 2001, which will provide microwave connectivity to the IT units outside the Technology Park.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Kamal said that a group of fifteen entrepreneurs from J&K State have been selected for participation in the India Soft 2000 at New Delhi to be held from 23-24 February, 2001. The STPI and Electronics and software Export Promotion Council are also jointly organizing their visit to various call centres and software units in and around Delhi. The Directorate of Industries is meeting a part of cost of sponsoring these entrepreneurs.

Justice O P Sharma to conduct Haigam judicial probe

JAMMU, Feb 20: The J&K Government have appointed Mr Justice O P Sharma, Judge of J&K High Court as One Man Commissioner of Inquiry to enquire into the firing on procession of inhabitants of Haigam, Sopore, District Baramulla on 15th February, 2001.

In a notification issued here, the Government have asked the Commission to enquire into the causes and circumstance which led to the event of firing at Hiagam, Sopore on February 15, 2001, resulting in the death of certain persons and causing injuries to others. It shall also enquire whether the fire opened by the forces on the crowd was justified or not and fix responsibility for using excessive force, if any.

The Commission shall perform all the functions necessary for holding the enquiry or incidental thereto and submit its report to the Government within a period of two months.

The probe has been ordered by the Government in exercise of powers conferred by Section-3 of Jammu and Kashmir Commission of Inquiry Act 1962.

Two officers charge-sheeted

JAMMU, Feb 20: The court of Special Judge, Anti-Corruption, Kashmir, has charge sheeted two officers against whom FIRs were lodged in Police Station, Vigilance, Kashmir under Prevention of Corruption Acts, today. The officers are Mohd Akram Hajam, the then Custodian General, J&K and Mr Mohd Ashraf Hakim, Executive Engineer.

The court direction came after the Vigilance Organisation presented the challan against the officers in the court of law after the investigation had prima-facie established their involvement in the commission of offence.

According to a handout issued here by the Vigilance Organisation, Mohd Akram Hajam, the then Custodian General accumulate assets disproportionate to known and declared source of income. In the course of investigation of the case, it had been established that the accused was in possession of assets worth around Rs 15 lakhs which were found disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The investigations had further disclosed that the accused had filed false annual property returns and suppressed material facts regarding his assets.

Whereas, in the case of Mohd Ashraf Hakim, the then Executive Engineer, PHE Division, Handwara in criminal conspiracy with Mr FArooq Ahmad Malik, Junior Engineer and Mohd Yousuf Peer, Contractor had caused loss to the state exchequer in the execution of various works relating to water supply schemes in Muqam Shah Wali in district Kupwara.

Shivratri ‘Shobha Yatra’ taken out in Jammu

JAMMU, Feb 20: Thousands of people including large number of women and children took out a massive Maha Shivratri ‘Shobha Yatra’ in the old city here today.

The devotees, chanting bhajans and religious slogans in the praise of Lord Shiva with great enthusiasm and fervour first performed pooja at historic Shivalya temple on Shalamar Road and then with decorated chariot of Lord Shiva and His Tableau commenced Shobha Yatra on the city roads.

The religious procession after passing through various city markets including Raghunath Bazar, Purani Mandi Parade Ground , Moti Bazar, Kachi Chawni finally culminated at the same temple. A large number of members of Kashmiri Pandit community participated in the Shobha Yatra.

The District Administration had made elaborate security arrangement for the smooth conduct of the Yatra. Senior police officers and others in the civil Administration were also seen accompanying the processionists.

The reports of celebration of this festival were also received from Udhampur, Kathua, various Migrant Camps in Jammu and other parts of the state were also received.

Increase in Yatra

Katra, Feb 20: Pilgrims traffic to the famous Vaishno Devi Shrine has shown an increase of over 51,000 during this calendar year so far.

Over 3.34 lakh pilgrims from various parts of the country have visited the holy cave shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji since January Ist. this year. During the corresponding period of last year, 2.83 lakh pilgrims had Darshan of the holy cave shrine.

During the Ist. fortnight of this month, over 82,000 pilgrims have paid their obeisance in the holy cave shrine. Of them, about 63,000 were from outside the State.

Presently, 5,000 to 6,000 pilgrims are daily reaching at the base camp Katra town for their onward journey to the holy cave shrine.

PRIME students threaten self-immolation

SRINAGAR, Feb 20: Students, who have been adjusted in various medical and dental colleges in Jammu and Kashmir on the direction of the Centre, today threatened mass self-immolation before Parliament if their admissions were revoked or altered.

All the 67 students, including a large number of girls, will self-immolate themselves before Parliament House if the order was revoked or altered, Kaunsar Benazir, spokesperson of the students, told reporters here. Describing the agitation in Jammu against their admissions as "uncalled for and unjustified" she appealed to call off the stir as their admissions were legal.

"It is not the first time in our country that students are adjusted in Government colleges. There have been 19 similar cases when students have been adjusted on humanitarian grounds and it has been upheld by the Supreme Court in favour of students." (PTI)

Inderjeet Gupta’s demise mourned

JAMMU, Feb 20: A condolence meeting of Lok Jan Shakti Party was held under the chairmanship of its state president Peerzada Abdul Hamid here today to condole the demise of former Union Home Minister and senior CPI leader Mr Inderjeet Gupta today.

As per a release, two minute silence was observed in the meeting to pay homage to the departed soul. The meeting prayed to God to give courage to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss.

Addressing the meeting, Mr Kulbeer Singh, state secretary general and Mr Swaran Dass, state vice-president said that Mr Inderjeet Gupta was not only a senior most politician and parliamentarian but also an able leader and administrator. They said that country has lost a great son of its and the vacuum created by his death may not be that easy to fill in.

Others who spoke in the meeting included Messrs Bhagwati Sharan, Mohd Altaf Malik, Syed Aslam Shah, Tara Chand, Ghulam Mohd Bhat and Uttam Sharma.

Saxena, Farooq greet people on Shivratri

JAMMU, Feb 20: Governor Mr Girish Chandra Saxena and Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah have greeted the people on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri.

In a message the Governor said that Lord Shiva is a symbol of the balance which exists among the diverse forces of nature and creation. Maha Shivratri, he said, inspires us in our pursuit of truth and understanding of the universe and the cycle of dissipation of the old, and emergence of the new.

Mr Saxena said that Kashmir has been an important seat of Shavism and the world has been enriched by this ancient thought and philosophy. He added that the Shrine of Amar Nath, Budha Amar Nath and Shivkhori, as also the other Shaivite shrines in the Valley, are part of the composite culture of our State.

The Governor expressed the hope that the festival will be celebrated in a befitting spirit and with the usual fervour.

In a separate message, Dr Abdullah said the festival, though being celebrated with fevour and gaiety all over the country, has a special significance for Kashmiri Pandits, who celebrate it as Heerath.

For times immemorial, the people of the state have been celebrating this festival, like other festivals, in true spirits of composite culture.

Dr Abdullah said the hallmark of Kashmir’s rich ethos and glorious traditions is harmony and mutual co-existence, essence of that is intact notwithstanding attempts by some to create wedge and hatred among the people. Dr Abdullah prayed for peace and prosperity to the state.

Farooq condoles Gupta’s demise

JAMMU, Feb 20: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah today expressed deep shock over the demise of Mr Indrajit Gupta, MP and former Union Home Minister.

In a condolence message, the Chief Minister described Mr Gupta as a veteran and soft-spoken parliamentarian, an able administrator, a staunch trade union leader and a strong believer in socialistic principles.

Dr Abdullah recalled Mr Gupta’s services to the nation and his close association with Jammu and Kashmir especially in his capacity as Union Home Minister. He said that he reflected the determination of the nation to meet the worst ever challenge in the state. As the Home Minister, Mr Gupta had a pragmatic approach to deal with the

situation and in pursuit of restoring peace and normalcy he visited different parts of the state several times.

The Chief Minister said Mr Gupta was one of the few leaders having longest stint in parliament. His passing away is a great loss to the nation, he added.

Dr Abdullah conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family.

Nengroo greets people on eve of Maha Shivratri

JAMMU, Feb 20: The Minister of State for Food and Supplies, Mr. B. A. Nengroo has conveyed his felicitations to the people of the State on the eve of Maha Shivratri.

In a message the Minister hoped the Maha Shivratri will usher peace and prosperity to the people of the State. He hoped that people will celebrate the festival with sanctity and religious fervour.

The Minister said that government has already issued instructions to the Food and Supplies department to make available the essential commodities to the people. He said that the Food and Supplies department has been serving the people for many decades.

The Minister appealed the people to lift the Public Distribution System (PDS) commodities from the various go-downs of the department. He said that by doing so they will be contributing their bit in helping farming community, which contribute 80 per cent of the State population.

The Minister further directed the employees of the Food and Supplies department to be customer friendly. He also asked the employees of the department to conduct regular inspections of the market. He said that people should come forward with their grievances so that these can be solved.

Poll schedule for 13 blocks of Budgam,
Srinagar and Doda district

JAMMU, Feb 20: The Chief Electoral Officer Jammu and Kashmir who ia also the Election Authority for panchayat elections in the state has announced the poll schedule for eight blocks of Budgam, four blocks of Srinager, and one block of Doda district.

As per the notification issued here today, the dates for filing nomination papers for Narbal, Beerwah and Khag blocks of Budgam district and Kangan and Lar blocks of Srinagar district are February 23, 24 and 26, 2001. The scrutiny will take place on February 27 and last date for withdrawal of nominations is March 1st, 2001. The polling will take place on March 15.

The dates for filing nomination papers for Paddar block of Doda district are February 20, 22 and 23,2001.Scrutiny will take place on February 24 while last date for withdrawal of nominations is February 26 and polling will be held on March 12,2001.

For Budgam and Khan Sahib blocks of Budgam district and Ganderbal block of Srinagar district the dates for filing nomination papers are February 26,27 and 28, 2001. The scrutiny will be held on March 1st and last date for withdrawal of nominations is March 3rd. The polling shall take place on March 18.

The dates for filing nomination papers in the blocks of Chadura, B.K. Pora and Nagam of Budgam district and Srinagar block of Srinagar district are February 28, March Ist and 3rd 2001. The date of scrutiny is March 5th and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is March 8th, 2001.The polls shall be conducted on March 22, 2001 in these blocks.

Sadhotra flags off relief truck to Gujrat

JAMMU, Feb 20: The Minister of State for Rural development, Mr. Ajay Sadhotra today flaged off truck containing relief material for the Gujarat earthquake victims donated by Om Sai Dham Charitable Trust, Talab Tilloo, Jammu.

The relief material consisted of 111 blankets and warm clothes was donated by the devotees of Sai Baba and the members of the Trust.

The Minister hailed the management of the trust for making available the relief material for the devastating earthquake victims. He said it is the duty of every individual and organisation to extend monetary and material support to the effected people of Gujrat who have lost every thing they possessed.

Earlier, the Minister distributed fruits among the Haj pilgrims camping at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan. He wished them happy and safe pilgrimage.

Referring to the demands of the people of this area, the Minister said that the present government headed by Dr. Farooq Abdullah is committed to provide better education and justice to all sections of the society. The Minister said that the government is fully aware of the problems of the people and is committed to mitigate their genuine problems.

The Minister also planted a tree in the premises of the school on this occasion. The Principal of the school thanked the Minister for encouraging the students of the school.

The students of the school presented a colourful cultural programme on the occasion.
