AERB takes exception to cricketers being
subjected to X-rays

MUMBAI, Feb 20: The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has termed as a "unhealthy practice" the Indian Cricket Board’s subjecting cricketers to X-ray tests to determine their real age.

Referring to reports that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had appointed a radiologist to keep a check on overaged cricketers playing for the under-16 and under-19 teams, AERB Secretary Dr K S Parthasarathy said, "X-ray testing for cricketers by the Board (BCCI) for determining the age of cricketers is not a healthy practice."

The radiologist appointed by the BCCI will decide the age on the basis of skeletal maturity as determined by the X-rays of the wrist, elbow and collar bone as appropriate.

"Medical X-ray examinations are very useful procedures when they are clinically justified. Age determination by X-raying bone joints is not a justified practice," Dr Parthasarathy said at an international conference on "radiation protection measurements and dosimetry : Current practices and future trends" at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) here.

Dr Parthasarathy, who is also the president of Indian Association of Radiation Protection (IARP) and an international authority on radiation measurements, radiation safety in the application of radiation in industry, medicine and research, and atomic energy regulations in the country, said that X-rays should not be performed for non-clinical reasons.

"An expert committee of the World Health Organisation stated that these procedures involve appreciable dose to growing tissues and should not be performed for non-clinical reasons unless absolutely necessary," he said.

In 1979, Dr Parthasarathy said, the British Medical Association strongly recommended that radiological examinations carried out solely for administrative and political purposes are unethical.

They instructed the General Medical Council to make the strongest possible representation to the United Kingdom Government to ban these practices and finally UK discontinued such a practice. "Current British regulations forbid X-raying hands of healthy children. The error inherent in the use of these skeletal techniques to determine age is reported to be plus or minus two years", he said.

Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) Chairman Dr Anil Kakodkar inaugurated the conference, while the AERB Chairman, Prof S M Sukhatme delivered the presidential address.

He said that he consulted the Chairman of the International Commission on Radiological Protection, Prof Roger Clarke, who is also the Director of National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB), UK for his views.

Dr Jill Meara, public health physician, said that the accuracy of the technique is not sufficient to justify the radiological risk. "Overall, it appears to be an unjustified practice", he said.

"Limited skeletal maturity data available in India indicate that the bone age determination by medical X-ray technique is unlikely to be very reliable. Using X-rays for any procedure not involving health benefit either to the individual or to the society as a whole is totally unjustified", he added. (UNI)

CHENNAI, Feb 20: After three days of hectic schedule, pre-quarterfinalists were spotted in the khel.Com Senior National Billiards Championship here this evening.

Reigning champions Ashok Shandilya of Delhi (3 wins from three matches) set the trend qualifying from Group A along with Mukesh Rehani of Delhi (two wins), and runner-up Devendra Joshi of Maharashtra (two wins from two matches) and Md Asim of Bengal (one win one loss) following suit in Group B.

Karnataka’s B Bhaskar edged out Omar Balsara of Orissa 948-394 to top the Group C with three wins from three matches. Prem Prakash of Tamil Nadu is the other player to qualify.

Barring Group G, there was no hitch in spotting the qualifiers as the top two in the groups won their respective matches. But it was a three-way tie in Group G between Dharmender, Varun Taneja and qualifier Simmachalam of Andhra Pradesh.

The Andhra cueist bowed out of contention on better points aggregate. Needing to win his last match against Dharmender to make the grade, Simmachalam came up with a stupendous performance before losing 502-458.

It was a neck and neck contest which saw lead changed ends frequently. With excellent top table play and accurate potting, it was Simmachalam who led 423-413 in the 44th visit. Five fruitless visits thereafter cost him the match wherein he managed a mere two points. In fact this turned out to be the turning point for Dharmender, who held on gamely and came with short breaks to lead 453-425 in the 49th visit. But Simmachalam responded well with a break of 33 in the 50th visit to lead 458-455. Dharmender had breaks of seven and 36 as against three managed by Simmachalam to emerge winner.

31st Junior National Hockey
Punjab loses to Mumbai by 7-8 in semi-finals

CHENNAI, Feb 20: Down by two goals, with two minutes remaining, Punjab pumped in two goals in the last two minutes, before losing to last year’s runners-up Mumbai 7-8 via the sudden death in the semifinals of the 31st Junior National Hockey Championship here today.

Mumbai, who nearly paid the penalty for being complacent in the closing stages of the match, found their hero in—goalkeeper Sairam Bishnoi, who saved the shot of Avtar Singh in the sudden death to guide his team to the summit clash with Chandigarh on the morrow.

After Punjab made it 2-2, thanks to two superb penalty corner conversions by Jugraj Singh, the 15 minutes of extra time failed to resolve the deadlock and the contest spilled over to the tie-breaker where both the teams converted four of the five shots. For Mumbai Vikram Pillai, Sunil Singh, Satish Kumar and goalie Sairam Bishnoi scored, while Vijay Alphonso hit out. For Punjab Jugraj Singh, Gabbar Singh, Bikramjit Singh and Avtar Singh converted while Jaswant Singh shot wide.

In the sudden death, Sunil Singh and Satish Kumar came off with flying colours, while Avtar Singh’s shot was saved by Bishnoi after Jugraj made no mistake with the first shot.

The moment Bishnoi, who converted the crucial fifth shot into the tie-breaker to stretch the contest to the sudden death, brought off a fine save, it was jubilation in the Mumbai team, which should have wrapped up the contest at the regulation time itself.

Having defended well by saving eight penalty corners, Mumbai fumbled in the two crucial short corners that Punjab earned in the 68th and 69th minute of the match, which nearly brought the downfall of Mumbai as Punjba, enocuraged by the twin success of Jugraj, did well in the extra time and came close to scoring. But Gabbar Singh just failed to deflect a pass from Jasbir, inches from the goalline. It was a close contest though Mumbai had the better of exchanges in the first half with Satish and Vijay Alphonso showing good cohesion in the attack with able assistance from medios Vikram Pillai, Junaid Jada and Girish Pimple. Punjab too made some swift moves through Gurjant and Jagbir with Yugraj and Yadwinder lending a helping land. Two minutes from the half time, Mumbai hoisted the lead when Vikram Pillai converted a penalty stroke after Satish Kumar’s shot hit the legs of Punjab defender Sarbraj Singh. After change of ends, Mumbai despite enjoying a lion’s share in the attack, was pushed back by the rampaging Punjab forwards.

Mumbai stretched the lead to 2-0 against the run of play, thanks to an effort by Satish Kumar after he was put throughed by Vikram. When it looked curtains for Punjab, came the twin goals before sudden-death, sounded the death-knell for them. (UNI)
