Preparation resumed for bigger challenge

CHENNAI, Feb 15: With the challenger cricket competition having provided some meaningful match practice, the 25 probables for the Indian team will resume their preparation for the bigger challenge of taking on world champions Australia in the home series, at the concluding phase of the camp here from tomorrow to February 18.

However, the three- day camp will have two more additions, with former Haryana star Narendra Hirwani and Mumbai’s young Sairaj Bahutule joining the preparations to provide practice against leg spin.

The inclusion comes in the wake of star leg spinner Anil Kumble’s forced absence in the series and chairman of the selection committee Chandu Borde having expressed dissatisfaction with the bowling of the seven spinners in the camp.

According to coach John Wright, Hirwani, who shot into fame with an eight wicket haul on debut against Vivian Richards -led West Indies here in the late 80s, and Bahutule will provide practice against leg spin in the wake of the challenge to be posed by Aussie leg spin sensation Shane Warne.

Some of the players in the camp will be playing for India A in the tour opener against Australia at Nagpur from February 17. (UNI)

Cricket anti-corruption head confident of clean up

AUCKLAND, Feb 15: Cricket’s anti-corruption unit head Sir Paul Condon said here today he was confident he is on track to clean up the game well inside his target date of the 2003 World Cup.

Condon told reporters he and his hand-picked unit of six had already seen a reduction in the suspicious activities which had tarnished the game in the past year.

Investigations have led to the banning of test captains Hansie Cronje and Mohammed Azharuddin for their roles in match-fixing scandal.

"The sort of things that were going on six months ago have stopped, the Funny calls to cricket grounds, trying to get into the groundsman, trying to get into umpires.

"We’re on track. Certainly before the next World Cup, I would hope we’ll have in place new recommendations that will help avoid this," Condon said.

The former London police chief was in New Zealand after the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) executive meeting in Melbourne to meet with New Zealand cricket’s anti-corruption pair of retired judge Sir Ian Barker and lawyer Nick Davidson.

They were still to talk to former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe, accused of accepting money for providing match information. Crowe said he believed the money was for a newspaper column.

Condon wouldn’t be speaking with Crowe, saying it was up to Barker and davidson to conduct the New Zealand inquiries.

Condon has assembled a high-profile team including three former detectives whose jobs had taken them around the world to investigate crime. (AFP)

PSG held to 1-1 draw by 10-man Ac Milan

MILAN, Feb 15: Paris St Germain picked up their first point in the second phase of the champions league with a 1-1 draw against 10-man Ac Milan yesterday.

But the French side will be disappointed not to have won the game after Milan were forced to play the entire second half one man short following the dismissal of Brazilian defender Roque junior for a professional foul.

Milan went ahead in the 27th minute when Demetrio Albertini found Leonardo inside the area and the Brazilian produced a brilliant turn to lose his marker before coolly slotting the ball home.

But within three minutes PSG were level after Nicolas Anelka broke free of a flat-footed Milan defence to race on to an Ali Benarbia through ball and confidently fire past Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati.

Anelka was in on goal again three minutes before the break but this time Roque junior pulled him down and Swedish referee Anders Frisk had no alternative but to show the red card.

Milan coach Alberto Zaccheroni, already missing four first team regulars through injury, was forced to shuffle his pack at the break bringing on French midfielder Ibrahim Ba for striker Oliver Bierhoff and switching Paolo Maldini to the centre of the defence.

PSG had a good chance to go ahead in the 56th minute but wing-back Didier Domi shot over from close range after excellent work from Benarbia.

It was something of a surprise when PSG coach Luis Fernandez replaced the light-footed Benarbia, who had been arguably the best player on the pitch, with striker Laurent Robert. The switch coincided with an intense spell of Milan pressure.

The Italians would have restored their lead five minutes later had Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko not rushed his shot and fired high and wide from a good position.

Milan’s third Brazilian, flying Winger Serginho, was causing PSG plenty of problems down the left flank but too often his crossing was inaccurate and Milan’s forages came to nothing.

As Milan appeared to run out of steam PSG regained their composure and Robert forced a good save out of Abbiati with a powerful shot from a tight angle after he had robbed defender thomas helveg on the edge of the area.

While Milan missed the biting presence of Gennaro Gattuso and Massimo Ambrosini in midfield, PSG, who have won just three of their last 12 french league matches scoring only seven goals, lacked the confidence to really attack Milan.

Milan will be relieved to have at least earned a draw which leaves them on five points and still in with a chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals. (REUTERS)

We will play aggressive cricket: Gilchrist

MUMABI, Feb 15: The visiting Australians began their second day in India today with vice-captain Adam Gilchrist declaring his team would play aggressive cricket during its 52-day tour.

‘We have to bat, bowl and field aggressively to beat the Indians on their home soil and if we play to a plan I don’t see why we can’t win both the test series and the one-dayers here,’ he said.

‘Last time around we won the one-day series but could not win the test series and we were a little disappointed but this time we have come well prepared to win both,’ Gilchrist told reporters at the Foster’s (official sponsors of the Australian team) press meet here.

Gilchrist, also the lone wicket-keeper in the squad, and fast bowler Damien Fleming represented the Australian team at the function while the others decided to take much-needed rest in their hotel.

Queried about CBI’s decision not to question Mark Waugh about his alleged involvement in the match-fixing scandal, Gilchrist said: ‘As our skipper Steve Waugh said soon after the team’s arrival yesterday we are all relieved. Mark is a key member of the team and obviously we don’t want him to be in any sort of pressure before an important series’.

On West Indies batsman Brian Lara’s statement that he was the target of Aussie sledging during the recent series which the Australians won handsomelchrist said it was all in good spirit and there was no animosity.

Asked whether the Australians would be targetting any of the Indians for special treatment (sledging), Gilchrist said ‘none’.

‘In fact, we would like to get the Indians out as fast as possible so that we can put pressure on them all the time,’ he added.

Fleming, who, along with their bowling spearhead Glenn McGrath, forms one of the best new ball attacks in the world, said the only way to beat the Indians would be to play aggressively.

‘I have had some happy memories here and I think the best way to get on top of the Indians is to play aggressively from the word go because once you give them (Indians) room to settle down they are capable of turning things around,’ he added.

Asked whether he had any set plan to bowl to Indian batsmen, fleming said ‘I have many but I cannot discuss it with you’.

‘Whatever plans we have we would like to implement them on the field,’ he added.

When aksed what he enjoyed doing most apart from bowling his heart out for his country, Fleming said ‘sipping Fosters beer’ with a mischievous smile.

After the team landed yesterday skipper Steve Waugh had said he would like to use the first two three-day games at Nagpur (against India-A from February 17 to 19) and Mumbai (against Ranji champions Mumbai from February 22 to 24) to get acclimatised to the heat and bounce of the pitches before the test series. Sunil Dev Singh of Jammu has won his second silver medal for the State at this young age. Whereas, it was third consecutive bronze medal for Mohd Riaz of Poonch district.

Now, Mushtaq Ahmed, who accompanied the team as a coach in the Sub-Junior National, is imparting training among the young boxers of Poonch.

The State team was accompanied by Rajan Sharma, manager Kathua Stadium.

According to the sources, the 10-member team would have won more medals for the State, had they been imparted intensive coaching in the coaching camp which is a pre-requisite before any national level competition.
