Crush militancy

Sir,

The recent killing of Sikh brethren in J&K in India by the terrorists of the Lashkar-e-Toiba group must be seen more closely by the media & the people. The terrorists have cleansed the Hindu Pandits are now targeting the Sikhs to further divide the community. This terrorism must be ruthlessly crushed before any more damage could be done.

Hope the GOI realises this and does everything to stop this proxy war with full military might.

PDD & Power crisis

Sir,

Talks held between the Government and the representatives of the Student Community over the power supply issue are reported to have failed and the students have threatened to intensify their agitation if their demand for regular power supply without frequent cuts is not accepted. The students have been agitating for the past over three months against the irregular and inadequate power supply with eleven hours cut while the Government has been expressing its inability to make any increase in the current supply of power owing to financial crunch. In modern times, electricity is one of the basic needs of the people and without it, it is impossible to live a normal life. To that extent students, demand is genuine and if a popular Government cannot provide basic needs to its people, what else can be expected of it. The plea of the Government is that the revenue collected by it is much less than it has to pay to Northern Grid from which it purchases the Power and that due to financial difficulties it cannot purchase more than the present supply. The question is why can't the Government realise the revenue from the consumers and why do the consumers pay less than that they consume. The simple answer of this question is that the PDD officials are not honest to their duty. Corruption is the root cause of revenue crunch. It is an open secret that the PDD officials resort to corrupt practices to make money. If a survey is conducted honestly, it will be found that not less than forty percent connections are illegal and the consumers having their illegal connections have an understanding with the concerned officials. The concerned officials of the Deptt. realise revenue from them on fifty basis and put it into their pockets as their is no official record of such connections. Even those consumers who have executed agreement with the Deptt. and installed meters have an understanding with the concerned officials. Besides big concerns like factory owners and hoteliers own lakhs of rupees to the Government as electricity dues, but no action is taken to realise these dues from them.

Unless proper steps to change the system are taken the power supply situation will not improve and the common man will continue to suffer.

Some accoutability system should be evolved in the Department at the earliest otherwise the present system will lead to a great loss and within a few years, we shall have no electricity.

Yours etc..
