Paes power guides India to Davis Cup Asia-Oceania zone second round LANG FANG CITY (CHINA), Feb 11: Playing some of his best tennis in extreme conditions, Leander Paes did it again for India as he blasted past Chinese number one Zhang Yu in straight sets today to take the country to the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone second round. Playing in a track suit in almost freezing temperatures, Paes, the hero of many a memorable victories for the country, ripped past his opponent in style, winning 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 in just over one and a half hours in the first reverse singles. With his win, India took clinched the best-of-five encounter against China with three wins. However, Syed Fazaluddin faltered yet again, as he lost the inconsequential second reverse singles, which was relegated to only academic value and was reduced to a three-setter. Fazal failed to capitalise on a bright opening as after winning the first set in a tough tie-break against Wang Yu, he lost the next two to enable China narrow down the margin of defeat to 2-3. Wang won 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-4. India now play the winner of the Japan-Thailand tie in the second round. In case India play Japan, they have to travel there while if it is Thailand, the latter would travel to India. The Japan-Thailand tie, however, has been postponed to next week due to severe weather conditions in Japan. This is the first Davis Cup victory for India on foreign soil after they had defeated France on the latters home courts in 1993. A second round victory would earn them a chance to play off for a world group place, where they would play one of the eight losers of the world group of 16. India had shared the honours on the first day on Friday with Paes winning his match over Chinese southpaw Wang Yu 4-6, 6-0, 6-0, 6-4 and Syed Fazaluddin losing the other rubber to Zhang 4-6, 1-6, 0-6. However, the visitors brightened their prospects after taking the doubles yesterday when Paes teamed up with his illustrious doubles partner, Mahesh Bhupathi, to take the country to a 2-1 lead as the duo beat the Chinese pair of Yang Jing Zhu and Xu ran 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 50 minutes. Bhupathi has decided against playing singles here as he is still nursing a shoulder strain he sustained during the Australian Open last month. In todays match, Paes, cheered on by a sparse but encouraging Indian crowd in the indoor staium, completely dominated the proceedings over his opponent who seemed to have no answer to the Indians superb and spirited display. The Indian broke his opponent six times in the match while the latter was not able to equalise even once. The Indian number one began the first set on top gear as he tore apart the Chinese in every department, hitting superb return of serves and classy placements. Paes decimated the Chinese, breaking him throughout while retaining his own serve at ease to take the set (6-0) in just 23 minutes. The only time Zhang probably gave the strong-going Indian any opposition was in the seventh when staving off a game point, he seemed to stretch the game in his favour. However, Paes denied him this as he overcame two deuce points to retain his serve. Finally, the Indian broke his opponent in the eighth for the second set (6-2). The third set, which was the only chance for the Chinese to stay in the match and keep his countrys DaCis cup hopes alive, saw him hold on to his serve till the sixth. However, with pressure and opposition mounting, he could not withstand the onslaught of Paes who broke him in the eighth, for a crucial 5-3 lead. Finally, the Indian ace served the set (6-3) and the match out, finishing with a blasting serve, to take India to a well-deserved victory over China. Last year India had reached the world group playoff match after defeating Lebanon in the first round (February, in Lucknow) and Korea in the second round (April, in Delhi). However, they lost the playoff to Sweden in July at Bastad (Sweden), soundly beaten 0-5 with paes out of action due to wrist injury. (UNI) |
