Clarification

Sir,

This clarification is with regard to the news item in Daily Excelsior of 9-1-2001.

Inspite of continued dry spell and almost complete disruption in the power supply to Poonch District the water supply to Poonch is being maintained. This has been made possible by running the Diesel Generating set at the main pumping station.

As regards the allegation of the said supplies being drawn from a local nallah, this too is not true as all our sources are from Dugwell/natural springs and therefore there is no chance of contamination.

Again, whenever leaks in pipes are reported these are plugged immediately and presently no such spot is leaking.

Baseless allegations

Sir,

The news item published in Daily Excelsior under caption "Teachers Lecturers List Demands" on January 25, 2001 has given a shock to me that one Abdul Qayoom Mir so called President of Teachers Lecturers Union of Block Batote has levelled some allegations against me. The publication of such news item through the columns of your esteemed paper is surprizing as the Paper has earned very high reputation for its impartial attitude and high journalistic ethics, in the eyes of readers spread all over the State and even at National Level.

This unique identity and balanced approach of the paper has compelled me to approach your goodself to ascertain the facts related to the publication of news items levelling baseless allegations against me which are malicious, concocted and creation of some disgruntled elements who are jealous with my working and popularity under fake names and fictitious banners of non-existing organisations. I challenge such elements to come forward with substantial evidences if they have courage in support of their allegations. I have no concern with the transfer of teachers which are being made by the Chief Education officers or by the Director School Education himself, if needed.

Right to free speech and expression is essential for democratic functioning, but one's right to preserve his reputation can not be under mined. Defamatory statement has injured my reputation in the society that I am enjoying in the Department in particular and in the Society in general.

I would like to request you to kindly supply the particulars of the author Mr. Abdul Qayoom Mir to enable me to proceed further to file a case of defamation against him for maligning my career and reputation.

Yours etc....

Be real tigers, not just on papers

Sir,

Donation for noble cause is considered as a pious job all over the world but for some social, political and religious organisations of the Jammu and Kashmir State their job is to only appeal the general public to donate generously than to come forward themselves for this noble cause.

This is evident from the statements of a number of organisations which are coming to the fore, since the natural catastrophe struck the State of Gujarat on Republic Day in which thousands of people lost their lives and unaccounted number of people have become homeless, appealing the general masses through their handouts released in newspapers to donate liberally for what they suggest others a noble cause.

Since January 26 newspapers have been flooded with statements of such organisations in which they have expressed sympathies with the people of earthquake ravaged Gujarat state and extended every possible help for the relief and rehabilitation operations in that State. But, it is very disappointing that only a few organisations have come forward for making donations in cash or kind for the affected people so far while most of them have seemingly indulged in conveying condolences and expressing sympathies with the natural calamity stricken people.

If these organisations are sympathetic and want to render helping hand in the relief and rehabilitation measures then they should come forward themselves in helping the natural calamity stricken people rather than asking the general masses to donate generously keeping in mind that they are also living on the same earth and can become canon fodder for the natural calamity. The condition of these organisation is like that of a man sitting idle in a burning house and asking the others to extinguish it.

Instead of crying these organisations should firstly donate cash and kind and then ask others to follow them as this step will encourage the people for this noble cause.

Keeping in view the number of organisations which have taken the task of collecting the cash or kind by raising donation boxes and making heart-touching appeals to attract the donors, the people while donating should see the antecedents of such organisations so that money really goes to the right quarters because earlier it had been noticed that many people with vested interests came with fake organisations to take the benefits from such disasters.

We all know that humanitarian and economic devastation in Gujarat will require much more as terrible devastation caused by an earthquake of this magnitude can easily overwhelm the ability of any Government to respond. It is a prime responsibility of all the Indians to try to mobilise emergency financial aid for the reconstruction of Gujarat as they had done for the families of those security personnel who attained martyrdom during the Operation Vijay in Kargil.

Here are my suggestions to all those organisations/bodies which have not donated any thing so far, to offer all they can to help people in Gujarat through proper channels to ensure that, these spring back, to their lives.

As human beings it is our duty to help those who have lost whatever they had in the devastating natural catastrophe because their rehabilitation is not an easy job. At the time when foreign countries like the United States, the United Kingdom and Russia etc are coming forward for the relief and rehabilitation of the Gujarat people, we living in the same country should not lag behind and donate generously whatever we can for this noble cause.

Yours etc....
