Sheikh Rehman felicitated
Shafi reiterates Government’s stand on NCERT syllabus

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Dec 23: Education Minister, Mohammed Shafi Uri today reiterated that National Conference (NC) Government will not introduce the syllabus changed by NCERT in Jammu and Kashmir State.

Presiding over a function organised here today in connection with felicitation of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) state chief and MLA Sheikh Abdul Rehman for being declared as the best legislator, he said reality is reality and it can not be presented in a distorted form.

He said our Government has neither accepted such syllabus nor will we do so in future as we have a right to do this. What the other states of the country will do, we are not bothered for that but we have a right to differ, he added.

The Minister said education comes under Concurrent List and the wrong decisions of Centre are not binding on us. He asked the gathering that they should shed all doubts in this regard from their minds.

Without naming any body he said those who try to show the masses that they are their protectors and hence have introduced this syllabus is a disservice to people and democracy . It was better for them to invite the educationists and seek their views on the matter, he added.

The Minister warned that entire world will laugh at us if we distort the facts about the history.

He warned that in future neither the authoritarian nor the blackmail politics will be acceptable and maintained that people living in urban areas should not consider those living in backward areas as backyard.

He said how can we talk of Ladakh and forget Kargil which has its own geography and culture. Hence these things need a rational discussion he added.

The Minister said heavens would not have fallen if Constitutional status of J&K would have been kept intact.

Favouring the delegation of powers at village level, he said the main objective of Naya Kashmir was to take power to grass root level in villages and remote areas.

He, while making a dig at the protagonists of separate statehood and the trifurcation theory, said those who do not know any thing about the formation of regions are crying hoarse unnecessarily.

He said how is it justified that a person living in Lal Chowk of Srinagar or posh Gandhinagr of Jammu giving a call for separate statehood without knowing about the problems and aspirations of the people living in far-flung and remote areas?

He said every region has its own demography and geography and we want to bring these regions on common platform by giving them equal status.

He said dialogue is must in a democracy and where the chances for it end tension and chaos prevail.

He said differences do persist in a democracy but the people, apart from difference, who try to find the solution of the issues through consensus, are the true democrats.

He said consensus is the basic pillar of democracy and finding the solution to the issues through consensus despite the differences is the soul of democracy.

He said a democracy flourishes in the country where the basis of the political set up are on justice, secularism and equality and where the majority does not try to thrust its will on minority.

The Minister also congratulated Sheikh Rehman and paid rich tributes to him for his services to the state and its people.

Earlier speaking on the occasion Sheikh Rehman said the democratic principles are devaluing. He regretted that even in Parliament the members go up to the chair by shouting slogans, using un-Parliamentary language and behaving in a rude manner. But the things will not improve with this behaviour.

He said throughout his life he never took any opportunity to violate rules and regulations in Assembly or Parliament.

He said though along with many intellectuals of Doda district we fought for different demands. But what I realised is that through individual efforts much cannot be achieved.

He said this is the main reason that the bill for Chenab Development Council was introduced by me in the Assembly.

He said till infrastructural changes do not take place system can not be improved.

Sheikh Rehman said he never joined any party on the basis of emotions and this is the reason that he remained associated with Praja Parshad Movement and as a true nationalist I found no differences in it.

He said the rejection of two nation theory was based on my strong conviction which came true later on.

He said if Islam is one religion then why Bangladesh was separated from Pakistan and my efforts are for everlasting peace in the region. India and Pakistan should form a Joint Confederation. This step will automatically help in sorting out Kashmir issue, he added.
