Asaar Mahal, a unique addition in the
uniqueness of Kashmir-Shafi

Excelsior Correspondent

Jammu, Dec 12: Asaar Mahal a magnificent house of heritage , is coming up in picturesque Srinagar to preserve for posterity the glorious remnants of Kashmirs 5000 years old history. "We owe it to our posterity", said the Education Minister, Mr. Mohammad Shafi while enumerating the main highlights of the ambitious project. "Kashmir is unique and this addition will add to its uniqueness", he observed.

Mr. Shafi said "Asaar Mahal Hamari Tariqi Aur Tehzibi Shinakhat Ki Jiti Jagti Tasvir Hogi". ( Asaar Mahal would depict historical and cultural identity of Kashmir). He said that our existence in a way is directly related to our antiques. Preserving this valuable collection from different periods of the history for coming generation is a responsibility of every citizen of the State.

Recalling the endeavours being made in the past in this regard, Mr. Shafi said that in1952 Sher-i-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah had invited Mr.Madhav Saroop Vatsa, the then Deputy Director General Archeological Survey of India to advice the State Government in building a cultural complex. Sheikh Saheb even discussed the plan with Moulana Abul Kalam Azad but due to certain factors the dream of the great leader of Kashmir could not be materialized in his life time. The museum was actually an effort to keep the syncretic identity of Kashmir, right from the age of Pandavas going through Rishism to Shaivism to Buddism to Sufi Islam preserved in an elegant manner.

Ex-Prime Minister, Mr. I. K. Gujral while visiting an exhibition of antiques of Kashmir was shown a coin whose market value was assessed to be 50,000 US $ at that time. Fascinated with the collection, he felt that Kashmir has rare collection of Archaeology and advised to arrange complete preservation of it.

The Archival wealth of the State is presently housed in the old museum building at Lal Mandi, having poor and outdated facilities of preservation and display, it would have become impossible to retain the antiques in perfect form there.

The new museum will have the latest facilities. Its building would be fireproof, damp proof and designed to withstand disaster like earthquake, snowstorm etc. Arrangments for artificial lighting, generators, security have been ensured while its designing. Country’s best architects have been identified to complete the project within duration of two years. Total cost of the project is estimated to be about Rs. 15 crore . Rs. 2 crore have been released by the centre under 11th Finance Plan. More help is expected from the Centre for the project.

Major attraction of the Museum would be precious articles of Toshakhana, a copy of Holy Quran calligraphed by the Mughal Emperor Aurengzeb,a exclusive shawl made in 1885 bearing complete map of Srinagar city, paintings, textile, natural history, anthropology, numismatics, manuscripts and old armoury.

The museum is coming up at the centre of Boulevard on the banks of beautiful Dal Lake in the lap of Shankaracharaya Hills. To achieve the designing excellence, an architectural competition was promoted as the project of certain magnitude and nature at such a picturesque locality is executed rarely. The design of Mr. Narinder Dangle from Pune has been selected for Asaar Mahal.

"One day the museum would become an identity of Kashmir and a major tourist attraction. The foresighted decision of making Asaar Mahal would prove out to be a real bless for posterity ", said Mr. Mohammad Shafi.

Culture Corner
Janpith Awardee with Kashmir connections

By O P Sharma

Recipient of highest literary honour, Janpith Award, Indira Goswami has deep understanding of human nature and a unique style of expression. She is the first woman writer to bag this coveted highest award for her rare literary contribution.

Mamoni Roysom Goswami, popularly known in the literary world as Indira Goswami, is today the greatest woman-writer in Assamese. This information is given in the " Masterpiece of Indian Literature" published by the National Book Trust.

While the entire nation is proud of her, Indira Goswami has special connection and association with Jammu and Kashmir. She was married at an early age, but before she could really find her sweet little-world, Mamoni found herself standing alone. Her husband was killed in an accident during 1967 in the Kashmir valley.

Sudden Turn

The shock was sudden and grave indeed. For quite sometime, she had sense of shock and wilderness. As destiny would have it, she came out of cocoon of her grief after her vital decision to fight her odds out. It was a turning point in her life. She drew inspiration from great writers like Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya. She pursued her studies at Guwahati.

With strong will she completed her research at Vrindavan on a scholarship completing her doctorate on " Comparative Study of Goswami Das’s Ramcharit Manas and Madava Kandali Assamese Ramayana from Guwahati University in 1973.

High Merit

Her love for Ramayana continued even thereafter and she produced voluminous work " Ramayana from Ganga to Brahmaputra" in the year 1996 and later was awarded the International Tulsi award.

Travelled widely, Indira Goswami has written over two dozen novels, numerous short stories and her autobiography as well. Many of these have been translated into several Indian and foreign languages. Some of them canned and also turned into TV serials.

Her inimitable style and themes around women have made her the most extraordinary literary figure of the Indian literature in the recent years. The characters in her novels and plays are real life-like and embedded deep in the social conditions. This distinguished author has come into contact with different categories of people and she has faithfully portrayed them in literature.

Unfinished Agenda

In her autobiography, Indira Goswami has sketched her life and philosophy. There is deep impact of the Kashmir on her mind and emotions. Artistic control she has on her creations, is best examplified in this " An Unfinished Autobiography". It gives vivid picture of gradual growth of her literary stature, not only in the Assamese but the entire Indian literature.

A prolific writer, Indira Goswami says: " Writing is in my blood, in my veins. If I stop I will die of suffocation. Without my pen I will die... With my writings I am free as a bird, to fly anywhere, to be anyone, to understand anything". Her emotions, her pain, her memories, her realities, her loneliness flow like the mighty Brahmputra- never without its mighty currents of life-line.

Indian regional languages are making steady progress and producing rich literature. The Dogri and Kashmiri, undoubtedly, have growth over the years but these still need greater advancement. Secondly, the works of merit of one language should be translated in other regional languages for higher readership. Thirdly, there has to be more inter-action between the writers and poets of various regional languages so that their harmonious development is ensured and real Indian literature is produced.
