Smoking: A slow
poisoning
Sir,
The first thing I
hate in my life has been smoking, of course the
2nd one was drinking. Medically, it has been
established that out of two, smoking is worst. I
am happy that the law has been made to ban
smoking in the public places but it becomes the
duty of every one to enforce the law effectively
and the defaulters be penalised suitably.
A slogan which I
read on the walls of the Govt. Medical College
and Hospital Jammu "A Cigarette a day takes
15 minutes away" one can easily calculate
how fast the life is being cut short by those who
are chain smokers. On one side doctors are trying
hard to find out latest drugs, way out to
increase the average human life span and also
spending lost of money on the research to probe
the causes of dreaded diseases and their
treatment and on the other hand the grower of
tabacco manufacturers, traders of cigarettes and
the state, central Governments for earning
maximum revenue, are all out to increase the
numbers of smokers day by day. A strong effort is
required to put a full stop to produce more and
more smokers and a big sacrifice at all levels
(i.e. Govt. to lose the revenue, parents to set
example by not smoking before children, etc.) is
required.
Smokers not only
spend their wealth and harm their health but also
create an unhygienic atmosphere, around them and
damage their passive smokers by slow poising to
an extent that by the time they are diagnosed as
"The smoking sufferers" the disease may
prove in its stage from where it becomes very
difficult rather at time impossible to save the
life, thus increase in fatal cases by active as
well as by passive smokers. The recent reports in
the Indian Parliament reveals that more than
eight lakh deaths annually happen due to tobacco
related diseases and an amount of rupees 13500
crores is being spent annually for the treatment
of these diseases. What a shocking and alarming
figure.
A full
determination from all is required firstly to
condemn and curb this diseases and secondly to
eradicate it by all sincere efforts so that no
one indulges into the habit of smoking any more
which of course makes the neat and clean fresh
air unfit for human consumption apart from acting
as a slow poison to the smoker.
Yours etc...
