LONDON, Nov 30: Virender Sehwag is being dropped for the first test against England in return for International Cricket Councils decision to review the way match-referee Mike Denness handed down penalties against six Indian players in South Africa. A settlement to this effect is understood to have been reached between ICC and the Indian Cricket Board today. (PTI) |
Dalmiya in a strong position to dictate: British media LONDON, Nov 30: The tough posture of International Cricket Council (ICC) on Virender Sehwags inclusion for the test match between India and England notwithstanding, the British media says Indian cricket board chief Jagmohan Dalmiya is on a stronger wicket due to support from the third world cricketing nations. In the worst possible scenario, if the the Indian board decides to defy the ICC on the controversy over the harsh punishment meted out to six Indian players by match referee Mike Denness and if the governing body of the game moves to suspend India, Dalmiya would be able to defeat such a move, they said. "Jagmohan Dalmiya and the Indian board could count on enough support from the members of the International Cricket Council to avoid defeat in the event of a vote on whether to suspend India from the world game," the Guardian said in its sports page article. "Eight out of ten votes would be needed in a ballot to suspend India should they select the suspended Virender Sehwag for next weeks first test against England, but Dalmiya appears to have outflanked the ICC by winning support of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka," it said. However, the Times said that the danger of a split in international cricket was still clear and present despite ICCs decision to extend its deadline for the BCCI to pull Sehwag out of first test match against England at Mohali. Guardian said in its article that Dalmiyas support of Bangladeshs application for test status has won friends in Dhaka and his personal relationship with General Tauqir Zia, the chairman of Pakistans board, should overcome the political difference between the two countries. "General Zia and Dalmiya had a meeting this week and it is believed they agreed that the power base must shift from London to the sub-continent," it said. Reflecting on ther stand of the Pakistan board on the stand-off, Times said "mindful of the situation, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) yesterday called on all members of the ICC to help to resolve the crisis." Meanwhile, in a separate column in Guardian, Mike Selvey said if Dalmiya wanted to say that international cricket was run from a white power base as continuation of colonialism, "then it is easy for him to reinforce his view by pointing at the current administration of the ICC. Commenting on the possible resolution of the crisis, the daily said "compromise might well be the outcome of this sorry affair but that after all is what politics, especially sporting politics, is about - Dalmiya as flash gordon, magnanimously saving the planet; the oz connection doing the job; no winners and no losers; faces and the game saved all round, for now." Ganguly upset over selectors attitude MUMBAI, Nov 30: A battered Indian cricket team returned here from South Africa this morning hoping to salvage their pride in the home series against England but skipper Sourav Ganguly is reportedly unhappy for not being consulted in the team selection for the first test starting Monday. Indian coach John Wright told reporters that the tour to South Africa was very tough and the Indians struggled to adjust to the conditions there. "However, we are looking forward to the series against England," he said. But Ganguly was very angry at not being consulted before the team for the first test was selected. "They (selectors) did not bother to ask me for my suggestions, nobody called me," Ganguly was quoted by the mid-day newspaper as saying. "Couldnt they call me for two minutes? is it a new rule that the captain will not be asked for his opinion? I will try to confirm this from (BCCI) president Jagmohan Dalmiya," Ganguly said. (PTI) |
Kanwaljits unbeaten 148 puts J&K in command NEW DELHI, Nov 30: A classic unbeaten 148 by Kanwaljit Singh and his unfinished 217-run partnership with Shabir Kanth helped Jammu and Kashmir reach a commanding 237 for one against Services on the first day of the North Zone Ranji Trophy match here today. Electing to bat, J and K suffered an early blow losing Raju Sharma in the ninth over with the score at 20. But Services were denied any further occasion to rejoice as Kanwaljit and Shabir (69 no), taking full advantage of the docile conditions, set up a marathon six-hour partnership to put the team on course of a huge first innings score. Sudhakar Ghag and Hari Prasad began the bowling for Services with a tidy line and length and troubled J and K openers initially. It was Ghag who got the only breakthrough for Services as he castled Raju (11) with a yorker. Kanwaljit, who had scored 56 and 90 at Ferozshah Kotla against Delhi, once again looked in good nick and began clobbering the bowlers immediately after arrival. Shabirs was initially a supportive role as he concentrated on rotating the strike. Kanwaljit struck 15 fours on way to his fifth first class century which included some glorious flicks and full-blooded pulls. He was lucky to survive a confident leg before appeal on 90, and got another life immediately after completing his century as Arun Sharma floored a caught and bowled chance. Shabir too loosened up gradually and dispatched ten boundaries en route to his unbeaten 69. Services captain C D Thomson used ten bowlers including keeper Sarabjeet Singh to try and break the partnership, but in vain. (PTI) |
