Srinath ruled out for rest of Lanka series COLOMBO, Aug 18: Indias injury woes were compounded today with speedster Javagal Srinath being ruled out for the remaining two test matches against Sri Lanka after injury on his left hand was detected to be a fracture. Coach John Wright said an X-ray on Srinaths hand this morning confirmed that the bowler had suffered a fracture just below his little finger. Srinath was hit on his hand by a Dilhara Fernando snorter while batting in the first innings of the first test at Galle and was forced to retire hurt. He did not bat in the second innings though he bowled in both the innings of Sri Lanka. Srinath would be out of action for about a month which makes him a doubtful starter for the Asian Test Championship match against Pakistan in Karachi next month. The bowler hoped to be back for the South Africa series in October saying the team needed him more than ever and he was determined to play. India, who are already without Sachin Tendulkar, V V S Laxman, Anil Kumble and Ashish Nehra, all of whom have injuries, lost the first test by ten wickets. The next two tests are scheduled at Kandy (August 22-26) and Colombo (August 29-September 2). (PTI) |
Tendulkar to go to South Africa for foot treatment MUMBAI, Aug 18: Sachin Tendulkar will leave next week for South Africa for treatment to his injured right toe by leading orthopaedic surgeon Mark Fergusson and the Cricket Board will meet the expenses. Sports medicine expert Dr Anant Joshi said Tendulkar will leave for Johannesburg on August 22 or 23 to also facilitate the making of specially designed footwear that will cushion the injured toe. Tendulkar suffered a hairline fracture in his toe while playing in the final league match of the Triangular series against the West Indies in Zimbabwe on July four and pulled out of the on-going Sri Lanka series as the foot had not healed completely. Cricket Board secretary Jaywant Lele, who revealed Tendulkars treatment plans here today, expressed confidence that the maestro would be fit for the tour of South Africa which will commence on October one. Prosecutors decline to file rape charges against Tyson SAN BERNARDINO (US), Aug 18: Prosecutors have declined to file rape charges against former heavyweight boxing champ Mike Tyson, saying the case could not be proved. The San Bernardino county district attorneys office reviewed the case and conducted a follow-up investigation before reaching a decision. "Its precisely because of Mr. Tysons reputation for violence and his notoriety and his previous conviction for rape that we really, really looked at this case very careful," Deputy District Attorney David Whitney said yesterday. "We concluded after reviewing everything we currently know about the case that it cannot be proven beyond reasonable doubt." Whitney said it was unlikely charges could be filed in the future. A 50-year-old woman maintains she was sexually assaulted by Tyson on July 16 at a home he rented while training in this resort in the San Bernardino mountains East of Los Angeles. Tyson, who said he was innocent, left big bear for phoenix to train for a Sept. 8 fight with Danish Boxer Brian Nielsen in Copenhagen. "There was never a doubt in my mind that, when the authorities took a hard look at the case, the truth would serve to vindicate me," Tyson said in a written statement. "Now that this is behind me, I am just looking forward to fighting and regaining the Heavyweight Championship of the world." The 35-year-old Tyson served more than three years in an Indiana prison after being convicted in 1992 of rape and other charges. (AP) |
Rios fumes as Roddick blasts into last four WASHINGTON D.C., Aug 18: American teenager Andy Roddick overpowered Marcelo Rios of Chile 6-3 6-4 to reach the Washington Classic semifinals on Friday. Blasting serves in the 130-135 mph (208-216 kph) range, Roddick clubbed 10 aces past the former world number one as he advanced with relative ease. Roddick faces either compatriot Michael Chang or Frenchman Fabrice Santoro in the last four. The American was able to get an early break in the first set as Rios floated a backhand wide to give the 18-year-old American a 3-1 lead. The break in the second set came after controversial overrule call by chair umpire Norm Chryst. He decided a Rios second serve was out and the double-fault gave Roddick his break. "I made mistakes in the two breaks and that was basically the match," Rios said. "But I was mad about the overrule because they always say they saw it even if they didnt." "I guess they think were stupid or something. The ATP makes a lot of mistakes and they make mistakes that can cost a match but they dont care." Roddick, however, was convinced the ball was out and the call was correct. "I dont think it was that tough a call," he said. "It was a second serve and only about 95 mph. It was nice to see norm step in like that because it was an inch or two out. Its a call that should have been made." Rios is now 0-2 against Roddick, having lost to him in Miami this year, but he still believes the American is beatable. "His game is based on his serve and if he serves good, hell win," Rios said. "Its tough to return stuff like that. But his second serve is nothing special and most of the top players have a really good second serve." Despite his loss, the tournament was a positive return to the tour for Rios, who underwent left ankle surgery on June 18. On June 26, Rioss first child, daughter Constanza, was born and he has talked all week about how that event has calmed down his usually fiery personality. Now Rios is trying to kickstart his tennis career after dropping to number 64 in the ATP entry system. "Winning three matches and beating (French Open runner-up Alex) Corretja (in the third round) is good but Im looking forward to getting back and beating the good guys all the time," Rios said.(REUTERS) |
Lawn Tennis far from sight in
J&K By Sanjeev Sharma JAMMU, Aug 18: In the present era when Indian tennis legends Leander Peas and Mahesh Bhupadi have already established supremacy world over thus encouraging the Punjab and Union Territory of Chandigarh to take the tennis to the villages, the game of tennis has yet to make inroads in Jammu and Kashmir. Although the highest sports body in the StateJ&K State Sports Councilhas build-up the required infrastructure at the main sports hub of M A Stadium, here, yet it seems of no avail, as there are no takers to the game due to the apathy of the concerned association. The game which is part of the sports calendar of the Inter-college competitions of Directorate of Physical Education, University of Jammu, used to play only once in a year that too for the sake of participation. As we go through the past, it has been learnt that the game might be one of the famous sports in Jammu and Kashmir. In Jammu city only there were six lawn tennis courts. The then Prince of Wales College, now GGM Science College, had two courts of British time. Government Polytechnic College, University of Jammu and Usman Club had one each. At present State Sports Council has its own court at M A Stadium, here, besides a well maintained court at Jammu Club. Sports Officer, Ajit Singh Wazir said that State Sports Council had provided all the necessary facilities to the players around 12 years back, when a good number of trainees used to practice on the clay court at the M A Stadium, here. But, due to the inactive association, the clay court is lying barren since the last ten years. The independent court, provided with a changing room and screen boxes, has no takers at present. The main reason for empty courts, as per the Sports Officer, was lack of competitions all these years. "We are ready to upgrade the facilities at the courts, provided some one turns up ", said Mr Wazir, taking to EXCELSIOR. "There is no dearth of talent in Tennis in Jammu and Kashmir" said Raj Kumar, who played lawn tennis for three years till 1990. He said that around 40 players in all age groups used to play tennis at Polytechnic ground, here, but only till 1990. The strength started reducing afterwards, when the J&K Lawn Tennis Association stopped holding competitions and later become defunct and as of now the situation was the same, explained Raj Kumar, who is presently a Private producer. When contacted, the general secretary of the Lawn Tennis Association of J&K, Captain Murti said that he has taken up the matter with the Education Minister for some identical place where full-fledged infrastructure could be developed. However, he said, " this year we have proposed to hold competitions in all the age groups by mobilising the participation from defence forces and from other districts of the State." In the neighbouring states of Punjab and Chandigarh, the initiative to bring the game to the villages has been taken by none else, but the concerned Lawn Tennis Association. The rural tennis programme, which virtually adopts youngsters aged between 8 and 11, has won young hearts from the hardy Punjabi farming community. Besides in Punjab, the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) has plans to expand the programme to villages in the entire North India, including Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. |
