Indo-Pak relations

Sir,

Kashmir Problem has already been discussed with Pakistan during Simla Agreement, Lahore declaration and other fora in the past. The last time it was with Musharraf, the General. It proved an exercise in futility and to blame Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee not doing home work is not justified. The records were straight and an effort was made to reach an understanding which was acceptable to both India and Pakistan. Benazir and Nawaz Sharif also wanted to adopt a position which was a little away from their stated ones, during their earlier periods after attaining power but could not proceed further due to the stands adopted by the hardliners within and outside the party and compelled them to adopt quite different postures. Benazir during here first tenure signed an agreement not to attack nuclear installations and discussed many other issues when she invited Rajiv Gandhi in 1989 without making any precondition on Kashmir. Recently, Benazir even expressed her willingness in an interview to an Indian journalist Romesh Menon that she welcomes the normalization of relations with India. But the effort made by the unelected and unrepresented dictators for improvement of relations with India is not acceptable since he lacks support. A similar stand is stated to have been adopted my Nawaz Sharif and his party leaders. A double standard may be due to the reason that Gen. Musharraf was disputing the earlier agreements made by the elected heads of Pakistan India by now should understand that it cannot keep claim for all of Kashmir for ever and Pakistan by now, should realise that to force India to implement UN resolution is also not possible. None of the Ex-Prime Ministers of Pakistan was safe in his country after his tenure. With all these in the background it was difficult for Gen. Musharraf to give a nod to any decision during Agra Summit. And that is why he tried to utilize the occasion for publicising his point of view to gain sympathy of Militant Groups. His intentions were clearly spelled out when he held a meeting with Hurriyat leaders inspite of the resistance shown by the Indian Government.

Pro-active approach

Sir,

Killing of pilgrims at Sheshnag, of the poor shepherds at Chergi and at village Luddar in Shroti Dhar would have been enough for the Vajpayee government to act. Firing by militants at Jammu Railway Station on 7th August and escape of militants has raised many questions on the sincerity of the government to protect the human rights of the common man. Government of India by not ensuring the safety of the ordinary-poor. backward, innocent and rural people has been committing great violation of Human Rights of citizens of India. National Human rights Commission must take note of it with the killing of Innocent passengers at Jammu Railway Station where no security appears to have been provided to the common citizens. Those at the helm of affairs must be questioned for their failure and must be told by the National Human Rights Commission that they have been kept to protect the life and property of the common man and not to Construct Stories after the Killings.

To protect the common man, VDC and Dhok Defence Committees can not serve the ultimate purpose and regular forces must be sent to remote areas and if required the deficiency in remote areas could be fulfilled by reducing the forces in the cities and that kept around the officers and politicians to protect individuals since in the cities much better means of communication are available, better and nearby hospitals are available and so the victims of any attack can be saved much easily since establishing contacts is much easier and local resources are also better. Blood of the poor is not that cheap, we must realise atleast now. Enough of blood has been spilled.

When we are so short of forces and police that we are required to ask the poor and remote area people to themselves take to weapons against the militants, we surely can afford to deploy as a routine 10 to 20 police men to protect even those who have been employed to protect the members of society.

Before the neglect creates more of damage. Government of India must now act as under Adopt pro active total approach to locate and eliminate the insurgents and their supporters, the militants, no doubt some innocent citizens may also be put to inconvenience but in the national cause, in the cause of humanity and in the common cause some sacrifice has to be given.

The movements across Indian borders and infiltration from Pakistan side must be fought with armed forces very strongly since Pakistan has regarded the acts of militants in Kashmir as well as their supporters in Pakistan as part of a Bonafide ''freedom'' struggle of ''Kashmiris''. Those in Pakistan training and motivation insurgents against India, facilitating the infiltration of the militants across Indian borders; and organising training camps for misguided and innocent Kashmiri youth, and those who are buying mercenaries from other countries for sending to India must be hit to finish by any means possible since Pakistan has refused to cooperate in this regard. So far, all soft options have failed has to be kept in mind.

Cath lab in Jammu

Sir,

It was very heartening to read the news that cath labs are coming up in Jammu. They were desperatory needed as the population of Jammu has increased many folds with many people suffering heart attacks, with many of them going to Delhi or Punjab for cardiac cath. In fact it was very heartening to read that jammu medical College and Batra Institute both have opened the cardiac cath, this will increase competition and will be better for the patients. My two colleagues and friends Dr Rakesh Soodan and Dr Dinesh Soodan are coming back to serve the people of Jammu after practicing outside Jammu for many years, we all colleagues of Jammu Medical College are proud of them.

Now the people of Jammu should also concentrate on preventing the heart disease. They should do regular exercise, keep their weight under control and eat the right food.In my recent visit to Jammu I found many young persons smoking and taking alcohol as a part of their status, these 2 are the main cause of heart disease all over the world. The society has become very stressfull, one should try to control their stresses as much as possible. The pollution needs to be controlled and it should be done by the Government. Prevention is always better than cure. Any new development in Jammu is a welcome news for Jammuites living abroad and getting cath lab in Jammu is one of them.
