Tendulkar pulls out of test series in Lanka MUMBAI, Aug 10: Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar has pulled out of the three-match test series in Sri Lanka after a scan done last night showed the hairline fracture on his right toe had not healed completely. Cricket Board (BCCI) executive secretary Sharad Diwadkar told PTI here today that Tendulkar, who underwent a scan for the second time, informed BCCI secretary Jayawant Lele in Baroda that he would be unable to play in the test series. Radiologist Dr Bhujang Pai, who is treating the Master batsman, said Tendulkar would now consult a senior orthopaedic surgeon as the bone scan and CT scan showed the fracture had not healed completely. Sports medicine expert Dr Anant Joshi will decide which orthopaedic doctor has to be consulted, he added. "Tendulkar, who was to undergo bone scan today, was suffering from acute pain, after he returned from Chennai where he had gone to shoot a commercial. He called up head of Hinduja Hospital Nuclear Department Dr B A Krishna and the decision to do the bone scan was taken immediately (on August nine)," pai added. Tendulkar suffered the injury in Zimbabwe while playing in the last league match of the Triangular series against the West Indies on July four and missed the subsequent Triangular series in Sri Lanka. The three doctors- Pai, Joshi and Krishna- discussed the matter with Tendulkar and his wife and decided that the star batsman pull out of the test series. Jacob Martin, who was named as the replacement for Tendulkar by the selectors when they picked the test team here will now join the Indian team in Sri Lanka. (PTI) |

EDMONTON, Aug 10: Konstadinos Kederis added the world championship 200 metres gold medal to his Olympic title while 30-year-old Hurdler Allen Johnson proved he was far from being a spent force here. While there was no doubt the 28-year-old Greek had pulled off the double, the battle for silver and bronze left the judges with a nightmare as Jamaicas Christopher Williams, American Shawn Crawford and Kim Collins of St Kitts all burst across the line together. After half-a-dozen looks at the photo finish the judge gave Williams the silver and Crawford and Collins the bronze as all three runner were clocked at the same time - 20.20sec. Britains Christian Malcolm was fifth in 20.22sec. The 200m title was thrown wide open even before the first heat when Olympic and World Championship 100m champion Maurice Greene, Ato Boldon and Frankie Fredericks all pulled out with injuries. But Kederis insisted their absence made no difference. "Whether Maurice Green had raced or not I would have won," said the Greek. "This victory means more to me than the Olympic title. It confirms my win in Sydney was no fluke. Let Boldon and Maurice try and beat me I am king of the 200," he added. Hurdling legend Johnson rebounded from his Sydney Olympics failure and ended a four-year title drought by taking the 110m hurdles crown for the third time. Johnson, who beat Olympic champion Anier Garcia into silver, said it was more important to him than the 1996 Olympic title and made worthwhile his decision not to retire when he was in the depths of despair after losing his Olympic title in Sydney. "If people had said in 1997 I would not win a title till now I would have thought they were crazy," he said. "This means more to me than Atlanta in 1996 because it is a statement to those who thought I was over the top that I am not and I am the man to beat once again," he added. Johnson, who despite his titles believes he has failed to get the same recognition as other champions because he is not brash enough, got off to a superb start leaving Garcia trailing and despite cracking the final hurdle he just managed to stave off his Cuban rival. "I thought `oh no this is like Sydney where I did the same thing and fell back from second to fourth," he said. "However my momentum just kept me ahead of Anier," he added. Garcia, who was seeking to add the title to his world indoor and Olympic crown, claimed it was the start that had cost him the race. "I needed just a normal start to win but I got a dreadful one," he said. "Allen is a great competitor but I tried not to focus on that and run my own race. "However, in the end he was too good but I think this duel between us has many more twists to come," he added. (AFP) |

BCCIs letter seeking Indias participation reaches MEA NEW DELHI, Aug 10: Sports Ministry has forwarded Cricket Boards letter, asking for Governments permission to play against Pakistan in Karachi in an Asian Test Championship (ATC) match in September, to the Ministry of External Affairs which will take a final decision on the issue. Sports Minister Uma Bharti today said her Ministry had received BCCIs letter dated July 26 and forwarded it to the MEA which will take a final decision in consultation with the Ministry of Home Affairs. Cricket Board president A C Muthiah today met Bharti to know the Governments response to the letter. Though Muthiah described the meeting as a courtesy call, he did admit that ATC came up for discussion. "She (Bharti) told me that the matter was under consideration," Muthiah said after the meeting. "The Government has already said that it would allow the team to play against Pakistan in multi-lateral tournaments but a final decision on ATC was still to be taken," he said, adding that he expected the decision by the third week of this month. Atc involves Sri Lanka and Bangladesh besides India and Pakistan. Every match is played in either of the participating countries on a rotational basis. India and Pakistan had played in Kolkata in the inaugural event in 1999 and it is Pakistans turn to host India this time. To a suggestion whether India and Pakistan can play the ATC match in a neutral venue like Colombo, Muthiah said it would be unacceptable. "If we dont play Pakistan in Karachi, the tournament will have to be called off. "Pakistan wants us to play in their country. We also want Pakistan to come to India," he said. Muthiah said Indias performance in the recent Triangular one-day series in Sri Lanka was disappointing especially in the final match where they suffered a humiliating 121-run loss to the hosts. "It was disappointing. The defeat in the final was the eighth in a row. The team needs to break the ice," he said. (PTI) |
