Nirankari Mission organises blood donation camp

JAMMU, Apr 22: The Sant Nirankari Mission engaged in the spiritual and moral upliftment of mankind organised a voluntary blood donation camp at its Satsang Bhawan, Shastri Nagar near here today.

The camp was organised in memory of Late Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji who along with his disciple Shri Partap Singh Ji made a supreme sacrifice for noble cause of humanity. The day is also being celebrated as Manav Ekta Diwas and a large number of devotees turned up for voluntary blood donation. It was the cherished desire of Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji that human lives be not wasted for want of blood and saints should donate blood liberally to save lives of fellow human beings.

The Camp was organised in collaboration with the Blood Transfusion Department of the Government Medical College Jammu and Regional Red Cross Society, Jammu. The blood groupings were conducted by the Red Cross Society. As many as 200 units of Blood was donated.

The Camp was inaugurated by Mr Amrik Singh (IAS), member secretary,Sant Nirankari Mandal, Delhi who was accompanied by Messrs Amolak Singh, Pal Singh and Ram Chand.

While addressing the gathering of saints on the occasion , Mr Amrik Singh urged the devotees to follow the principles of Nirankari faith as propagated by Gurbachan Singh Ji and Satguru Baba Hardev Singh Ji.

Earlier Mr Labh Singh, chief Sant Nirankari Satsang Bhawan Jammu welcomed the chief guest and other devotees. The vote of thanks was presented by Dr Manhas.

APS Udhampur students celebrate Earth Day

UDHAMPUR, Apr 22: The students of APS Udhampur celebrated Earth Day with great zeal and enthusiasm in the school campus.

According to a handout, the celebration was marked with the presentation of students highlighting the significance of Earth Day during the school assembly. They drew their school mates’ attention to the vulnerability of the earth in today’s modern age of development by increasing their awareness of environmental problems.

The Earth Day pledge was solemnly taken by the students , emphasising the importance of cleaning up litter and garbage to say no polythene bags, the necessity of mustering up courage to protest about threats to the environment and to contribute sincerely in reducing pollution.

An educative programme emphasising the necessity for the conservation of World’s natural resources was conducted in the school auditorium. The wives of Army officers, students’ parents in large number attended the programme. The function began with students’ paying obeisance to Mother Earth by singing a melodious song slorifying its unique beauty and expressing reverence for the natural world.

Young orators of the school namely—Anusha Singh, Kavita Adhikari, Keshav Banarji and Ritika Khajuria expressed their concern over the environmental problems being faced today. A quiz competition was also organised and later a plantation of saplings was carried out by the students.

Birth anniversary of V I Lenin celebrated

JAMMU, Apr 22: Communist Party of India Jammu Region organised a meeting to celebrate the 131st birth anniversary of V I Lenin.

As per a release, people from all walks of life attended the meeting which was presided over by Mr R S Mukat, Abdul Rehman Tukroo, G M Malik, Atamjit Singh and Kamal Dev, secretary CPI, Jammu. Mr Naresh Munshi, assistant secretary conducted the proceedings while Mr H C Jalmaria spoke about the relevance of Lenin in the present days Indian society.

He emphasised that Lenin gave practical shape to the philosophy of Marxism and led a successful revolution in the backward society of Russia.

Thakur Randhir Singh said that Lenin has made impact on the Indian society since independence and added that his Lenin’s idea have percolated in the whole society in India. Lenin past can save India from imperialistic exploitation.

Mr D K Rampal of Jammu University said that some people have started a disinformation campaign that Marxism is dead due to disintegration of Soviet Union. Prof Ram Pal said that Marxism will remain relevant so long as there are the exploiters and exploited. He added globalisation is the new name for imperialism and Lenin’s teaching can save India from the new form of impression.

Mr Naresh Munshi said that Communist Party is only instrument to liberate the world from the clutches of capitalism, colonialism and other forms of exploitation. Mr S S Lehar said that socialism is one of the basic features of Indian constitution but the present ruler of the country is subverting it.

Mr Kamal Dev, R S Mukat, G M Malik and Mr A R Takroo also spoke about the Lenin.

Shyama Samoha Havan performed by Swami Paul

JAMMU, Apr 22: The 14th Havan of ongoing 101 Shyama Samoha Havan Shrankhala launched by Swami Paul Ji was performed by him today at Patel Nagar Akhnoor road today.

The Havan Samaroha comprises of series of Havans to be performed by Swami Ji at different places with the sole objective of welfare and prosperity of disciples and devotees.

Swami Ji on his arrival was accorded a rousing reception by a large gathering of devotees from all walks of life who had assembled here to participate in this holy function. The venue wore a heavenly look due to its grand decorations with flowers and garlands.

Recitation of Gayatri Mahamantra from early hours in the morning added to the beauty of scene of enthusiasm and spiritual fervour amongst disciples and devotees.

After performing the Havan, Swami Ji addressed the gathering and during his spiritual discourse he explained the importance of spiritual involvement of a person in his own life. He emphasized that every human being belonging to any religion should devote some moments for worship to attain internal peace, self realisation and prosperity in his own life.

Swami Ji exhorted that to respect and regard each others religion must have the top priority amongst all of us. Brotherhood and sharing of each other’s joy as well as grief should be the principal of our disciplined life.

Describing the children and youth as the nation builders, Swamiji further added that need of hour is to see to and sort out all the problems being faced by them to ensure their betterment and bright future nation as well. While blessing, the children and youth. Swami Ji explained them the importance of decision, hardwork and love for mankind so as to see themselves prosperous in this universal journey.

The function concluded with bhajan, kirtan, distribution of Parsad and blessings by Swamiji.

Sales Tax Revenue touches Rs. 385 crores

Jammu, Apr 22: The Sales Tax Department has collected a record revenue of Rs. 385 crores in 2000-01, registering an increase of 100% over the collections made in 1998-99.

This was stated at a special function organized here today to review the performance of the Sales Tax Department during the year 2000-01. The Finance Minister, Mr. Abdul Rahim Rather, was the Chief Guest. Financial Commissioner, Mr. Jalil Ahmed Khan and senior functionaries of Finance, Sales Tax and Excise Departments were present at this simple but very impressive function.

The Finance Minister speaking on the occasion appreciated the spectacular performance of the Sales Tax Department during the year 2000-01 and said that the quantum jump in the sales tax was made possible because of strenuous efforts, firm determination, vigorous drive, effective supervision, constant monitoring by the Sales Tax functionaries. This record increase, he said was achieved in spite of the fact that no new fresh tax was imposed nor any increase was made in the earlier taxes.

Mr. Rather, however, cautioned the functionaries against any complacency. He said there is a lot of scope for improvements and departmental functionaries have to meet the challenge with firm courage and determination. They have to bear in mind that every penny realized will help in speeding up developmental process and providing better facilities to the people.

Every one of us, the Finance Minister said have to join hands and contribute in generating more resources for the State. Being largest tax collecting agencies the Sales Tax and Excise Departments have a very special role and he expressed the hope they will come up to the expectations. The current financial year, he said should witness still better performance helping in registering further increase in the State revenues. Not only targets are achieved but every endeavour has to be made to exceed the targets.

The Finance Minister said that the functionaries had to remain extra ordinarly cautious, fair, truthful and polite. They have to keep in mind that any slackness or lapse on their part will jeopardize the financial interests of the State. They have to remain always alert and made every endeavour to mobilize maximum resources for the State.

The Financial Commissioner, Finance Mr. Jalil Ahmed Khan speaking on the occasion also appreciated the impressive performance of the Sales Tax Department during the last financial year. He said through hard work, greater enthusiasm and firm determination the functionaries should d further increase the collections this year. This is the challenge which he said the functionaries would meet successfully.

The Sales Tax Commissioner, Mr. A. R. Mubarki who also spoke on the occasion highlighted measures taken by the Department which had helped in registering the impressive performance by the department this year. He said on an average the sales tax collection in the State has exceeded a crore of rupees a day an hoped that with the close coordination and the cooperation of the functionaries considerable increase will be made this and coming years.

Jammu, Apr 22: The Minister for Industries and Commerce, Dr. Mustafa Kamal said that Sikh Panth stood for communal harmony, progress and sacrifice. Recalling teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib the Minister said core is unity in diversity and it’s vice versa.

He cautioned people to beaware of the forces that do not want India to prosper. Dr. Kamal and S. Harbans Singh laid the foundation stone of Guru Arjun Dev Gurudwara at Domana here today. Pandit Balwant Rai Seth donated the land comprising 32 kanal from the ancestral property of his father Late Pandit Badri Nath Seth for the construction of the Gurudwara.

Both Dr. Kamal and Harbans Singh while thanking the Dogra Brahmin said that the action reflects the spirit of unity and reverence in all faiths by the people of the State. The Ministers stressed that the proposed Gurudwara should be an architectural marvel with massive plantation on the beautiful site.

It should cater to the needs of all the people besides spiritual solace. The Ministers recalled the role of the divisive forces, which resulted into the partition of the nation in 1947 and said even in that dark hour Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah stood like rock and exhorted people to remain united and secular. Because of the vision of the late leader the State has progressed, despite evil designs of Pakistan.

S.Harbans Singh donated Rs.25,000 for the construction of the Gurudwara and urged people to donate liberally for the noble cause.

Prominent among those present included Advocate Surinder Singh and Dy. Director Local Bodies, S. Inder Singh.

Road Safety Awareness campaign concludes

Jammu, Apr 22: A traffic park is being set up in Jammu city shortly to create awareness among road users about traffic norms. The park will be instrumental in spreading road safety awareness among people particularly children.

This was disclosed by the Minister for Transport and Information, Mr. Ajatshatru Singh at a valedictory function of Road Safety Awareness Programme today. The function was organised by the Society for Consumer Protection and Environment (SCOPE) here this morning.

The 3-month long road safety programme was arranged in collaboration with Union Ministry for Surface Transport under the sponsorship of the leading business establishments like M/s Choudhary Motors, Shaurya Motors, APTECH and J&K Bank Ltd.

The students of several schools like Delhi Public School, JK Public School, KC Public School, various Army and BSF schools, Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School, Gandhi Nagar, Jain School and Vishwa Bharti Public School took part in spreading awareness about road safety among road users. During the programme, the enthusiastic students of these institutions besides propagating the road safety norms also helped Traffic Police in regulating vehicular traffic in Jammu city.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Singh said that a general tendency has developed in the society to criticise others for the problems they face. He said we must have an introspection of ourselves and find out that where we have gone wrong. As long as we do our job well there will be no problem at all, he added.

The Minister suggested that not only school children but college and university students be involved in road safety activities. He said workshops and seminars must be organised in schools and colleges more frequently, as the student community is our future and they need to be educated for their better future.

Mr. Singh appreciated songs, skits and slogans on road safety presented by the students from different schools.

Referring to the duration of programme, Mr. Singh said performance report of the 3-month long programme, if approved by the Union Ministry for Surface Transport will be extended to year long activity in a phased manner.

The Commissioner/Secretary, Transport and Information, Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad Ganai and Transport Commissioner, Mr. M.K. Mohanty also spoke on the occasion.

Mr. Ganai said that migration from rural to urban areas has increased pressure on roads in big cities and this phenomena has further aggravated traffic conditions. He said, to educate the masses, citizen’s charter have been issued by the Transport Department about the road safety programme.

The Minister replied to a number of questions of students during the detailed question answer session. A number of suggestions were putforth by the students, which the Minister appreciated and assured that these will be taken into consideration.

The Minister thanked the organisers, students, their parents, Motor Vehicle Department, Traffic Police and Secretary, Amar Singh Club, Jammu for their tireless efforts to make the programme a success.

Government to protect consumer rights: Nangroo

Jammu, Apr 22: The Minister of State for Food and Supplies, Mr. B. A. Nengroo said that Government will take necessary measures for the protection of consumer rights.

Speaking at a consumer awareness camp organized by consumers protection organization at Kootha Tehsil Heranagar today, the Minister said the Government is actively considering establishment of consumer forums at district level. In this regard the Government will extend the requisite infrastructural facilities. He said that the Government is also considering to amend the existing consumer act. He asked the people to come forward with their grievances so that they can be effectively solved.

The Minister urged the NGOs to create an awareness among masses about their consumer rights. He said that the role of NGOs assumes the great significance in creating awareness among the people living the far flung areas. He said that people should launch a tirade against illegal profiteering. He said the Government is initiating measures so that the rights of consumers are protected.

He said that the present Government under the leadership of Dr. Farooq is committed to provide the clean and efficient administration to the people. He asked the local panchs and sarpanchs to work in close coordination with the administration in solving problems of the people.

The meeting was also addressed by the local panchs and sarpachs and they apprised the Minister of the problems being facing by the local people.

Representatives of various consumer forums and NGOs addressed the gathering.

Commissioner/Secretary, Food and Supplies, Mr. S. R. Kapoor was also present on the occasion.

The Minister also inaugurated Anatodiya Ann Scheme and distributed the ration at concessional rates to the beneficiaries.

Later the Minister visited Patoli-Barahamana in connection with the launching of Anatodiya Ann Scheme. He was a accompanied by Mrs. Zubadia Salaria and Director Food and Supplies, Jammu Division, Mr. S. C. Jandial.

Speaking on the occasion the Minister said the present government has always stood for upliftment of the down trodden masses and Antodiya Ann Scheme is an extension of the pro-poor policies of the Government. He said that the Government stands for the equitable development of all three regions of the State.

The Minister later distributed ration under Antodiya Ann Scheme to the beneficiaries.

CS reviews darbar move arrangements

Srinagar, Apr 22: Arrangements regarding annual Darbar move to summer capital were reviewed here today with the Chief Secretary, Mr. Ashok Jaitly in chair.

The Chief Secretary was informed that all necessary security, boarding and lodging arrangements for move employees have been finalized. The Director Estates, Mr. M.I.Kirmani informed the Chief Secretary that adequate catering and residential arrangements besides Government quarters have been made for the employees moving down to Srinagar in connection with Darbar move.

The Chief Secretary impressed upon security officials to be very courteous towards the people who come to secretariat for redressal of their grievances. He, however, instructed the concerned security agencies to allow the people only after 2 p.m. to enter the secretariat premises so that the normal work in the secretariat could run smoothly.

Mr. Jaitly directed the Estates authorities to complete the repair and face lifting work of secretariat etc. well before the offices re-open in Srinagar slated for May 7, 2001. He also urged the concerned agency to complete the on-going installation of Lift Service in the new block of the secretariat.

Regarding transport arrangements for move employees, the Chief Secretary asked the Director Estates to rationalise the transport arrangements in accordance to the need and requirement.

Later, the Chief Secretary alongwith the officers visited the old Secretariat also and inspected dilapidated blocks in the premises where the Accountancy Training School and Divisional Office of Employment Department are housed. He directed the Estates authorities to ponder over the proposal for shifting of those officers immediately to avoid any untoward incident.

The meeting among others was attended by Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Dr. Ashok Bhan, IGP, CID, Mr. Sinha, Incharge, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Mr. Mumtaz Afzal, Director Estates, SSP Srinagar, Deputy Director, Estates, Mr. Farooq Renzu and other senior civil and police officers.

Salathia asks people not be swayed by
trifurcation propaganda

JAMMU, Apr 22: The Minister for Power, Mr S S Salathia said that the shattered economy has been brought back on track by the relentless efforts of the present Government. He regretted that some defeated and neglected politicians could not digest the major achievements and were hell bent to derail the process by indulging in undemocratic and anti people activities. The Minister was addressing a public gathering at Chak Salarian in Vijaypur Block of Jammu district today.

Mr Salathia cautioned the gathering not to be swayed by the propaganda of anti people elements who are exploiting the sentiments of the innocent people on basis of caste, creed, region and religion. Commenting on demand of trifurcation raised by these elements, he said the accession of the state with Indian Union is final and no one on the earth can separate an inch of it.

The Minister appealed to the people to rise above the petty considerations and work for the upliftment of downtrodden sections of the society.

Referring to the demand of the upgradation of the local school, the Minister informed the people that the Government was fully aware with their problems and a comprehensive programme has been taken in hand to make all educational institutions fully functional.

The Minister announced Rs 20,000 for construction of residential house of Mr Jeet Lal of the village.

Lt Col (retd) B S Chowdhary along with 15 other prominent residents of the area announced to join the National Conference in presence of the Minister.

Prominent among those who spoke on the occasion were Messrs Hans Raj, Babu Balwant Singh and Surinder Manhas.

‘Muslim women still in pitiable condition’

JAMMU, Apr 22: Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah today said that the wall of division in the country brought the people far behind in every field and created hatred among them.

Addressing the gathering at the annual meet of Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys’ Association at Abhinav theatre here this evening, the Chief Minister expressed that before the division of the country, most of the people from our State used to go to Lahore or the Aligarh Mulsim University to impart education but the division blocked the opportunity and it directly affected the people of our State.

He pointed out that a large number of students of Aligarh Muslim University which is today a renowned Educational Centre in the World are working in Saudi Arabia, UAE and other Gulf countries. The old students of this institution whether they now belong to Pakistan or India, have good interaction and share common platform.

Commenting on the Educational backwardness on the part of Indian Muslims the Chief Minister stressed the need to promote education especially among the women, who remain the neglect lot in this male dominated society. He cursed the old and rigid thoughts put into the mind of the Muslims community by the so called Mullahs and some religious men due to which the community remained far behind and failed to compete today’s world. Dr Abdullah strongly criticised the acts of Talibanis of Afghanistan and said that Islam never taught such things. They are misinterpreting the Islam and its teachings and misleading the people for their vested interests.

He said that women should come out and fight for their right. They have to keep aside the Burqa and join hands with the men for the over all development of the country and their community.

Recalling the services of the founder of AMU, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan the Chief Minister said that he was a real thinker and a great visionary who lived for a mission to uplift the community. He felt the real pulse of the community and carried on his mission with great dedication despite all odds. The allumanaries of this prestigious institution should follow the holy and sacred mission of Sir Sayed Khan and it would be real tributes to him.

Assembly Speaker—Abdul Ahad Vakil also recalled the services of Sir Syed Khan and said that a large number of people in our State are former students of this institution. He touched upon some interesting events of the AMU when late Chief Minister Sheikh Mohd Abdullah was a student there. He recalled his old association with Late Abdullah and said that he carried the mission of Sir Syed Khan in his life.

In paper reading session, Mr Mohammad Shafi Pandit threw light on AMU and minorities education, giving statistical data about literacy rate among Muslims and their socio-economic status. Sheikh Rafiq read a paper on Sir Syed and Aligarh Movement, Mrs Shaista Hakeem on Sir Syed and Women Education, Prof Mohammad Ayub on Sir Syed Ki Taleemi Khidmaat, Mr M R Querishi Sir Syed Issar Hazir Kay Aiene Mein, Mr Manzer Khyam on Sir Syed- A Reformist and Mr Parveq Iqbal dwelt elaborately on Sir Syed ki fikker aur Daure Jadeed Kay Takaze.

The occasion was marked by Ghazals and Aligarh Taraana.

Mr Swami Raj Sharma presented vote of thanks.

Minister for Finance Mr Abdul Rahim Rather, Minister for Health Mian Altaf Ahmed, Minister of State for Food and Supplies Mr B A Nengroo and several legislators, judges, lawyers and a large number of Aligarians were present on the occasion.

The CM Dr Abdullah and the Speaker Mr Vakil were presented mementos on the occasion. Dr Abdullah released a directory containing the bio data and telephone numbers of Aligarians.

Earlier, Mr M A Anjum (SSP) convenor of the Association presented detailed annual report and also highlighted the facts related to the education of the community. He disclosed that Association intended to involve all the former students of the AMU in the mission. Several students including Mohd Shafi Pandit (Bureaucrat), Shaista Hakim, Sheikh Rafiq, Prof Mohd Ayub, Mr Qureshi, Muzar Khan and Parvez Iqbal spoke on the services and contribution of Sir Syed Khan. Mr Pandit presented a real data about the education standard and actual condition of Indian Muslims even today.

A directory having addresses and contact numbers of AMU ex-students was also released by chief guest on the occasion. A memento was presented to CM and the Speaker by the Association. The CM and MP Mirza Abdul Rashid announced assistance of Rs one lakh each to the Association for this noble mission.
