"Katre Katre Mein Tu" presented to Swaraj

NEW DELHI, Apr 21: "Katre Katre Mein Tu", the first ever audio cassette on blood donation produced by Young Blood Association (YBA) Jammu was presented to Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Mrs Sushma Swaraj at her Safdarjang Residence by the Association chairman, Mr Anil Padha.

On receiving the cassette Mrs Swaraj appreciated the efforts of the Association and assured that due weightage will be given to these songs which will be forwarded for scrutiny process.

Mr Padha thanked the Minister for the assurance and good wishes given for the promotion of voluntary blood donation in the country.

The meeting besides Mr Padha was also attended by members of YBA from Delhi. A set of these cassettes were presented to Dr A K Vaid (Cancer Oncologist) at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute, New Delhi and Mrs P Dutta, Principal Kulachi Hans Raj Model School, New Delhi.

The cassette was played in the School Assembly and was appreciated by the staff and students of the School. Rajiv Gandhi Hospital has also the practice of playing audio cassettes for the convenience of patients in th mornings.

It may be recalled that the "Cassette " was released by Melody Queen, Bharat Ratna, Lata Mangheshkar at New Delhi in recent past. The Association is holding a function in Jammu to mark its 20th anniversary where the members, singers, lyricist and other people involved in the preparation of cassette will be honoured.

Poll schedule for Anantnag district announced

JAMMU, Apr 20: Poll schedule for elections to panchayats of ten blocks of Dachnipora, Shangus, Khoveripora, Achabal, Breng, Shahabad, Qazigund, Kulgam, D.H. Pora and Qaimoh of Anantnag District has been announced by the Chief Electoral officer who is also the Election Authority of Panchayat Elections.

As per notification the nomination papers can be filed for Dachnipora and Shangus Blocks from 24th to 26th April. Date of scrutiny of nomination papers is 27-4-2001 while the last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 30. The polling will be held on May 14,2001.

For Khoveripora and Achabal blocks the nomination paper can be filed on April 26,27 and 28 while the scrutiny will be held on April 30. Last date for withdrawal of the candidature will be May 2nd and the polling will take place on 17th of May.

For Breng and Shahabad blocks, the nomination papers can be filed on April 30, May 1st and 2nd . The scrutiny of papers will be held on 3-5-2001. Last date for withdrawal of candidature will be May 5 and the polling will be done on May 20.

Similarly, the nomination papers for Qazigund block can be filed from May 3rd to 5th May. The scrutiny of the nomination papers will be on 7th of May while the last date for withdrawal of the candidature will be May 9. The polling will be held on May 23.

The nomination papers for Kulgam and Dhamhal Hanjipora blocks can be filed on May 7,8 and 9. The scrutiny of papers will be held on 10th of May. The nomination papers can be withdrawn till 12th May and the votes will be polled on May 27.

For Qaimoh block the nomination papers can be filed from May 10 to 12. The scrutiny of papers will be held on 14th of May. The nomination papers can be withdrawn till May 16. The polling will be held on May 31.

Concern over putting up of Amar Nath Yatries at Nagrota

JAMMU, Apr 21: A meeting of Shiv Sena Jammu and Kashmir was held under the chairmanship of its city vice-president Mr Rajiv Bandhari here today in which the matter regarding putting up of Amarnath Yatries in Nagrota and their departure towards holy cave of Amar Nath from there was discussed.

As per a release, it was stated in the meeting that this decision of the State Government will badly affect the business of the Jammu city. Moreover the Nagrota area is under the strict vigil of the militants and there is every apprehension of any untoward incident if the Yatries will be asked to put up in Nagrota instead of Jammu.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Rajinder Bhatia, north zone secretary said that if this decision is not amended by the Government the Shiv Sena will start an agitation. Moreover, Shiv Sena is shortly calling a meeting of Shopkeeper Associations to have a thorough discussion on the matter.

Others who participated in the meeting included Messrs Vijay Chowba, Surinder Mahajan, Rakesh Kohli, Sanjay Sharma and Rajesh Gupta.

Low paid employees stage dharna

SRINAGAR, Apr 21: Under the aegis of Low Paid Employees Federation, a large number of employees belonging to various officers staged dharna at Bemina under the chairmanship of Nazir Ahmed to lodge protest against forcible ouster of daily wagers.

As per a release, the employees also expressed resentment over the delay in issuing Insitu promotion orders in favour of deserving employees and non-completion of service books of the employees.

Mir Ghulam Rasool Batwani, general secretary of the Federation while addressing the employees said that the daily wagers were engaged by the authorities to carry on Government work but now when they have served for so many years they are arbitrarily being ousted from their jobs forcing them and their families to face starvation.

Ghulam Mohd Yatoo, Noor Mohd Katjoo, Abdul Ahad Rather and Rubani were also among the speakers who demanded immediate release of 2 percent DA instalment due from January 2001 and all instalments of COLA in favour of PSU employees who are struggling for the same. They also expressed resentment against the PDC and PDD authorities for their reluctance to issue requisite certificates to the employees who intend to obtain loans from Banks.

Bill to amend Consumer Act under consideration
of Govt: Nengroo

JAMMU, Apr 20: Several deputations called on the Minister of State for Food and Supplies, Mr Bashir Ahmad Nengroo today.

The deputation of Soft Drink Association demanded that the sale rate of their products should be brought at par with the rate charged in other states of the country. The Minister assured them that their genuine demands will be looked into.

A deputation of Federation of Chambers of Industries, Kashmir Division demanded that the recent hike in the licence fee of the Rice Mills should be reconsidered. The Minister assured the deputation that their problems will be considered.

Several consumers’ forums also called on the Minister and discussed the issues relating to setting up of district and divisional consumer fora. The Bill relating to the amendment of the existing Consumer Act was also discussed. The Minister assured them that the Bill relating to the amendment of the Consumer Act is presently under active consideration and the suggestions putforth by them will be examined.

Academy awards for best books announced

JAMMU, Apr 21: President of the J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages Dr Farooq Abdullah has approved the Academy Awards for best books in favour of seven writers and poets.

Disclosing this the Secretary of the Academy Mr Balwant Thakur informed that on the recommendation of the jury, the highest academy award in literature for best books has been announced and award presentation function will be held in Srinagar in the month of May 2001. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 25,000, a memento and a shawl and the award will be presented to the awardees by the President of the Academy.

In Urdu, the award of Rs 25,000 is being shared by Prof Hamidi Kashmiri and Hakeem Manzoor for their books "Sheikh-ul-Alam, "Hayat Aur Shairi" and "She’ar Aasman" respectively. Prof Rehman Rahi will get best book award in Kashmiri for his book "Siyaah Rooda Jarin Manz".

The Dogri award has gone in favour of Dr Lalit Magotra for his book "Zameen". Mr Javaid Rahi’s book "Lok Virso" has been selected from amongst the Gojri books. The best book award in Punjabi has gone in the favour of Mr Gurcharan Singh Gulshan for his book "Soora".

"Gandal"—a book in Pahari written by M Azeem Khan will get the best book award in Pahari language.

The Secretary further informed that for the first time the Award of Rs 25,000 is being presented to the Best Book Award winners. Earlier to this this, the award money was Rs 10,000 only.

The books for this year’s award are being invited by the Academy for competition very shortly and Secretary requested the writers community to wait for notification.

Non-camp migrants list demands

UDHAMPUR, Apr 21: A meeting of migrants was held under the chairmanship of Mr Pyare Lal Koul, vice-president Non Camp Kashmiri Migrant Organisation here today.

As per a release, Mr Jagger Nath Razdan, president NCKMO who was specially invited to represent the non-camp migrants gave the details of deliberation and problems projected by him in the meeting convened by Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah and chaired by Minister for Housing and Urban Development Mr G M Shah.

The demands which were raised during the meeting included, provision of residential accommodation for migrants living in rented accommodation for the last 11 years like camp migrants till their return to the Valley, payment of house rent to the migrants till residential accommodation is provided, provision of basic facilities like drinking water, electricity, lanes and rains in Kashmiri migrant colonies of Jammu division and MP and MLA constituency development funds be allotted for the development of migrant voters living in these colonies.

Mr Razdan said that Government and Election Commission have maintained deliberate silence during the panchayat elections and the migrants were deprived of right to franchise as such the adequate nomination of Pandita migrants in the concerned Panchayats block and district advisory boards be made.

He also demanded that ownership of Kacharai land under the possession of migrants before migration to any other person against levy be also stopped, fruit orchards of migrants be taken over by the Horticulture Department for the maintenance and sale of fruit crops immediately and the cost be paid to migrants, bifurcation of rations cards headed by Government employees, pensioners and relief holders with more than four members be effected immediately, rent of abandoned houses of migrants in the Valley occupied by the security forces and the return plan of migrants that was sent back to Divisional Commissioner Kashmir for incorporation of unemployment package is still propagated without employment and political package and needs to be done now and drive for employment of educated and trained migrant youths according to their capability as nothing other than the services is left with them.

J&K Police, a force to reckon with: CM
Ex-gratia raised to Rs 5lakh for police, Rs 2 lakh to SPOs

JAMMU, Apr 19: Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah today said that Jammu and Kashmir Police is gradually being a model police and a force to reckon with, and the day is not very far when other states would requisition our police to handle difficult law and order situation there.

Talking to media persons after police investiture ceremony at Raj Bhawan this evening Dr Abdullah said that the State police has not only been fully galvanized but also modernized. He said that the increased militant attacks on police are indicative of the fact that the police is playing a leading role in anti-militancy operations. He said it has achieved many successes recently and referred to many operations conducted by it single-handedly or jointly with other forces in Kathua, Udhampur, Dachan, Marwah etc. He said presentation of over 40 gallantry medals to policemen including President’s Police Medals for gallantry today by the Governor, was an indication of great sacrifices made by our gallant policemen. It also speaks about the high morale of our force, he added.

Answering questions of reporters, the Chief Minister said that everything possible is being done to further improve the efficiency of the force. He said under phased programme funded by the Centre, the Government is modernizing the force by providing it sophisticated weaponry, mobility, and communication besides looking after housing needs.

He said the Centre has also agreed to State Government’s proposal to increase the ex-gratia for all policemen killed in anti-militancy operations from 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. In case of SPOs it has been increased from Rs 1.25 lakh to Rs 2 lakh. This is in addition to a job provided to one person of the deceased.

Replying question on Village Defence Committees, the Chief Minister said that VDCs are being strengthened to make these more effective in combating militancy. He said last year 5000 SLRs were provided to VDCs and more modern weapons will be provided to them.

In reply to a question on Human Rights, the Chief Minister said the we have introduced Human Rights as a subject in syllabus for the training of police force. Special efforts are being made to make police people-friendly. Special cells have been created in every Police station and aggrieved persons can directly contact Director General and SPs for redressal of their grievances. On condition of jails, the Chief Minister said that he very recently visited district Jail Jammu and found the condition much better compared to the past

IAF to hold aquatic meet from April 23

JAMMU, Apr 21: The Indian Air Force is holding the 5-day Western Air Command Inter-Area Aquatic Championship at Air Force Station Jammu from April 23.

The Acquatic Championship will start under the chairmanship of Squadron Leader Jai Pal Singh Chauhan and will be inaugurated by Wing Commander Anil Tiwari, the officiating Station Commander Air Force Station Jammu.

This 5-day sports activity is going to witness various acquatic competitions comprising 50m, 100m, 400m freestyle, backstrokes and breaststroke events. Around 19 teams from all over the jurisdiction of the Western Air Command of the IAF are participating in the event.

The inaugural ceremony will mark the grand show of the acquatic acrobatics along with the hoisting of the Western Air Command Area Acquatic Championship flag, lighting of sports torch and the oath taking ceremony of the participants.

Flying Officer Rishidev Yadav, Secretary of this acquatic meet and the Station Sports Officer will lead the various sports contingents on the occasion.
