Waugh: Who knows what’s going on in Pakistan

MELBOURNE, Apr 9: Australian captain Steve Waugh today said it was difficult to work out what was going on in Pakistan where sacked cricket coach Javed Miandad has accused his team of deliberately losing a one-day series to New Zealand in February.

Waugh was speaking to reporters at Sydney airport after a gruelling tour of India where his side won the first test to extend their world-record winning streak to 16 matches but then lost the remaining two games to lose the series 2-1.

"You’re never sure what to believe coming out of there (Pakistan) but it seems to me he got sacked as a coach last week, so you can probably read into that what you want," Waugh said.

Miandad said yesterday: "The video footages are available which will unveil everything. The matches against New Zealand were pre-decided."

Pakistan lost the one-day series 3-2.

Australia’s greatest-ever wicket-taker Shane Warne, arriving at Melbourne airport, told reporters it was an issue for Pakistan and the International Cricket Council (ICC).

"As far as we’re concerned, we’re playing some good cricket and we’ve just come off probably one of the best series in a long, long time," Warne said.

"All we can do is go and give our best. It’s up to the ICC and Pakistan to get to the bottom of that."

Tour almost a success: Waugh

Waugh added that his team’s tour of India was "almost a success".

Waugh said it was a tough tour and his team had given 100 per cent but a couple of batting collapses in the test series proved costly after winning the first test in Bombay by 10 wickets.

Australia, the World Cup champions, fought back from 2-1 down in the limited overs series to win 3-2.

The Australian Cricket Board is expected to announce a squad later this week to leave in May for a five-test ashes tour of England.

Waugh had said before the Indian tour: "I think it’s fair enough for people to judge us on what happens on the next tour."

Punjab formulates special sports promotion prog

MOGA, Apr 9: The Punjab Government has formulated a special sports promotion programme aimed at the youth with the help of the Central Government.

Speaking at the concluding function of the two- day 9th Sports Mela organised in memory of Sant Baba Gulab Singh at his native Gholia Khurd village yesterday, Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal said the Government had made adequate arrangements providing better diet and coaching facilities to the sportspersons in the state.

He said under the same programme, off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who captured 31 wickets in the just concluded test series against Australia would by honoured by the State Government.

The Chief Minister appealed NRIs from Punjab to invest in Sports, Health and Education. (UNI)

Back home Hayden is inspired by India and her people

SYDNEY, Apr 9: While most players in the Australian team were complaining about the crowds, the heat, the humidity and the Indian captain, Australia’s most successful batsman on the tour Mathew Hayden revealed that he found "peace in the chaos of India".

Writing in ‘The Sun Herald’ Mathew Hayden said, "seven weeks ago I arrived in this most remarkable country to play a test series that every first class cricketer dreams of."

"It is not just one thing that is captivating in India, but a thousand things. I am inspired by this country and its remarkable people."

"There is a lack of the materialism that astonishes me. No matter how poor or lowly people appear, they smile and the effect is like taking an aspirin to cure a headache. When I was feeling crowded or harassed, I would focus on an amazing smile, a smile wrapped right around a face."

Hayden recalls his on road experience when he once freaked out with Steve Waugh. "Once we went out with the expectation of just wandering the streets and within three minutes there must have been 600 people behind us. It was a sea of people."

"The cricket crowds are impossible to describe," he said adding that the Kolkata test was "absolute bedlam, outrageously loud, like putting your ear against a rock concert speaker.

Tendulkar is God in India: Hayden

SYDNEY: Sachin Tendulkar is a God in India, a phenomenal player, says Australia’s new batting sensation Mathew Hayden.

Australia’s most successful batsman in the just-concluded series in India, Hayden wrote in a newspaper today, "his (Tendulkar’s) life seems to be a stillness in a frantic world and I admire his mental strength. He is a phenomenal player".

When Tendulkar goes out to bat, wrote Hayden, "it is beyond chaos — it is a frantic appeal by a nation to one man".

Tendulkar "seems like a spiritually rich individual, a solid human being; quite reserved and thoughtful to speak to. The people of India see him as a God," the left-handed opener wrote adding: "(Australian captain) Stephen Waugh is almost a God here, but Sachin is a God and people believe good luck shines in his hand".

Summing up his admiration for the Indian genius, Hayden quoted a Paul Kelly song about Sir Donald Bradman:

"he was more than just a batsman,

he was something like a tide." (PTI)

New Zealand aim to turn on the heat

SHARJAH, Apr 9: The weather is too hot for the hastly-assembled New Zealand team, but they are still confident of turning their own heat on Sri Lanka in the Sharjah triangular series tomorrow.

"The players are a little bit tired after the flight especially those who came in later via Melbourne. Most of the team arrived from Singapore," team manager Ross Dykes told Reuters.

"It is certainly hotter than from where we came from but this is something the players, especially the new blokes, have to get used to," said the manager.

"Pakistan and Sri Lanka are formidable sides and are stronger in these conditions.

"But we have a good and young team and for many players their careers are just starting to blossom," said the Auckland-born Dykes.

A first class cricketer for several years, Dykes is handling a New Zealand side which is quite different to that which beat Pakistan in the test and one-day series last month.

Called in at the last minute to replace India, New Zealand are being paid 200,000 by the organisers and are keen to make the most of this unexpected tour.

"Stephen Fleming, Nathan Astle and Adam Parore are being rested while Roger Twose was unavailable for this tournament," explained the former wicketkeeper.

"This is the first opportunity for Craig Mcmillan to lead the side though he did skipper the team against a South African provincial side last year. It’s just another stage in the career and he will continue to improve.

"Mcmillan, of course, has been in wonderful form this summer against Pakistan and is bowling pretty effectively too," said Dykes of the stand-in skipper for Fleming.

New zealand, beaten 4-1 by Sri Lanka earlier this year, aim to make amends. "We are here to win like the other teams," he said.

Sri Lanka, beaten by Pakistan by 16 runs in the opening match, are not taking New Zealand lightly. "We can’t afford another loss," skipper Sanath Jayasuriya said.

Ravi Kant guides Vishal to 17 runs win over Veterans

Excelsior Sports Correspondent

JAMMU, Apr 9: All round performance by skipper Ravi Kant helped Vishal Cricket Club beat Veterans Cricket Club by 17 runs in the first league match of the 2nd Gurdeep Singh Memorial (Veterans) Cricket Tournament being played at Parade ground, here today.

Ravi Kant alongwith Desh Rattan added valuable 80 runs for the third wicket partnership after Vishal Club lost two early wickets for 31 runs. Later, Ravi Kant clinched three wickets for 42 runs in his spell of five overs to emerge as the only choice for the man of the match award.

Earlier, Vishal Club won the toss and decided to bat first. In the allotted 25 overs, they set a target of 178 runs for the loss of seven wickets.

Desh Rattan was the top scorer with 38 runs, while Ravi Kant made 37 off 37 deliveries with the help of four boundaries. Shahid and Javed too did a fine job by adding quick runs. Javed, who opened the innings made 25 off 20 balls, while Shahid took just 11 balls to added 22 runs including four boundaries.

From Veterans Club, Krishan and Deepak Tondon shared two wickets each, while Rajinder Chib, Anil Kumar and Mohan Lal took one each.

Batting second, Veterans made a poor star and their first two wicket fell at the same score of 19, followed by the fall of third wicket at 49. However, Rajinder Kumar and Ravi Sharma fought back and both of them added 50 runs for the fourth wicket. But again the tale-enders gave a dismal performance which led to the whole side was bowled out for 160 runs in 24.1 overs.

Rajinder remained the highest scorer with 43 runs made with the help of four boundaries, while Ravi Sharma contributed 29 runs off 24 balls hitting four fours. Sanjay Mahajan remained unbeaten at 16.

For Vishal Club, Ravi Kant and Javed (Sr) shared three wickets each, while Sarat took two.

Rajesh Kumar and Mohan Singh were umpires in today’s match, while, Yogesh Kumar was scorer.

The organisers have decided to enforce the set rules strictly on the participating teams. If any club failed to reach the venue at 8.30, the other team will be awarded walkover, said Pawan Gupta, organising secretary.

Tomorrow’s fixture: Luxmi Cricket Club V/s Rehari Cricket Club at 8.30 am.

Meanwhile, the senior players of the Laxmi Cricket Club have showed their resentment against the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association for its biased attitude in selected the players for various national level competitions.

They pointed out that in the recently held 4th North-Zone Veterans Cricket Tournament, JKCA, without informing any body and without holding the coaching cum trails camp, selected the team. The same team got defeated in the hands of Punjab in a match which was held at MA Stadium, here.
