Ganguly to be back as an opener SHARJAH, Oct 25: Skipper Saurav Ganguly today put to rest all speculation about the batting order and confirmed that he himself would open the innings along with Sachin Tendulkar in tomorrows match against Zimbabwe in the triangular one-day series heres. "I will open," Ganguly said, drawing a pat on his back from coach Anshuman Gaekwad. "Everyone seems critical of the move to have demoted myself down the order, including Anshu Bhai (Gaekwad)... So I must pay heed to their opinion." Ganguly had promoted his deputy Rahul Dravid to open the innings in their previous game against Zimbabwe on Sunday, bringing himself at number four. Though Dravid clicked, scoring a solid 85 and playing the role of sheet anchor, the skipper himself got out for 18. With Dravid out of action for the remainder of this tournament owing to a finger injury and Ganguly back to his role as an opener, the crucial number four spot will now be taken by newcomer S Sriram, who has shown tremendous promise as a substitute fielder in the earlier games. Vinod Kambli, who was hit on his forearm against Zimbabwe by a rising delivery from trevis friend but is fit now, has a big task on his hand going in as the one-down batsman tomorrow. His captain had no suggestions for him and said he would rather leave Kambli to work out his own methods. "I have left Kambli alone to work things out for himself," Ganguly said. Gangulys comment on Kamblis uneasiness while playing short-pitched deliveries and his advice to let such balls go had drawn great media attention in the last few days and today the skipper said he would like Kambli to deal with them himself. "Every batsman has his own method to work out things. I am sure the same is true with Kambli. Ganguly said Kambli might be under some pressure after being unable to come up with a big score despite batting well and ruled out dropping him from the team. "Anyone would feel the pressure. Even after 150 matches, if I fail (in) two or three innings, I would feel the pressure. No batsman likes to fail," he said. "(But) I think everyone deserves an extended run. There would always be one or two failures within the team." The Indian captain felt it didnt really make sense to go after the bowling in the first 15 overs even if the wicket in Sharjah was docile. "At the most if you are going after the bowling, you would make around 80," said Ganguly "against Zimbabwe the other day we made 62." "So the difference is only 15-18 runs," said Ganguly. "But if you could pass the first 15 overs without loss, you are in a very sound position." (PTI) |

Cooch Behar U-19
Cricket Tourney Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 24: Delhi registered an emphatic ten wickets victory over host Jammu and Kashmir in the three-day North-Zone Cooch Behar U-19 Cricket Tournament which played at MA Stadium, here. Chasing Delhis first innings lead of 222 runs, Jammu and Kashmir scored 227 when whole side was bowled out in the 83.2 overs in the second innings, just two minutes before the lunch break. Satyajeet Singh held tightly one end and made his all out efforts to push J&K to draw level. But, in absence of good support from other end, Satyajeets brilliant knock of 86 runs was of no use. He hit 13 splendid boundaries in 272 minutes play facing 185 deliveries. At one stage, there were some hopes that host state could draw the match, but fall of six wickets in a short span of 28 runs shattered all dreams. Satyajeet, who came at number four position and was playing at 43 yesterday, had good partnerships with Vimarsh Kaw (21) and Mayank Goswami (13). Remaining batsmen could not stay for long on the crease and fell victim to left hander, Vivek Khurana, who did not allow the tale-enders to reach the double figure mark. Vivek was the main architect of the Delhis big win. He took five wickets for 42 in 20 overs. Satya Saikia and Yogesh Sachdeva shared two wickets each, while Tarun Gupta took one. In the second innings, Delhi took just seven balls to score the required six runs for the victory after lunch. Gautam Gambir made six, while Dhruv Mohan hit the winning single. Dr M S Mahal of Punjab Cricket Association and Sarbhjeet Singh of Haryana Cricket Association were the umpires, while Ashwani Sharma maintained score book. |
