Film with Kashmir backdrop
for simultaneous NEW DELHI, Oct 24: A Hindi feature film set against the backdrop of militancy in Kashmir that won praise from President K R Narayanan when he saw it is to have a simultaneous premiere in London and the United States later this week. Mr Narayanan, accompanied by members of his family and senior functionaries, after seeing it over the weekend, discussed the subject of the film, Mission Kashmir with its executive producer Vir Chopra, producer-director Vidhu Vinod Chopra, and stars Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt and Sonali Kulkarni. Sony entertainment television is making its foray into film distribution by holding a premiere of this film at the Piccadily Plaza in London on Diwali, a day before it is released in Indian theatres. This will be followed by a champagne reception at the Laugham Hotel in West end. The next day, the film will be premiered at the Loews Theatre at Times Square, Manhattan in New York, followed by a reception at the renowned Marriot Marquis in Manhattan. Both occasions will be attended by the producer-director and the main cast. In an interview, Mr Vidhu Vinod Chopra told UNI that the film was primarily about the loss of Kashmiriyat which was all about communal amity, rather than about the present situation. Vidhu, who was born in Kashmir, said the story of the film came to him on a visit to the valley when while moving in a Shikara he had visions of a blown-up Shikara flashing across his mind. Later, author Vikram Chandra spoke of similar experiences and so the duo decided to translate it into a film. Mr Chopra denied that he had once against turned to action films because his films Kareeb and 1942- a love story had not fared as well as his earlier Parinda which was an action film and won him a national award. He said Mission Kashmir had been made because he believed in the theme. He was confident that the message of the film would get through. Addressing a press meet earlier, Mr Vir Chopra denied that there was any controversy with regard to the song Boomro Boomro as it was just a word meaning Bhanwra (moths). The films stars Hrithik Roshan - who had signed this film even before the release of his debut film Kaho Na Pyar Hai - Sanjay Dutt and Sonali Kulkarni said it was clear that the filmmaker greatly believed in his theme as they had felt greatly inspired. Sonali later told UNI that she had so far acted in 13 films in about five languages during her seven-year career in films. Sonali was on stage in Pune when she started getting film roles. Her other films include Daayera, Mukti, Chelluvi and Dr Ambedkar. Atul Tiwari who has written the dialogues of the film said the fact that he hails from Lucknow helped him as he was fluent with urdu. But he had to learn some Kashmiri words for use in the film. He was chosen by Mr Vidhu Vinod Chopra who had seen Shaheed Uddham Singh for which Atul had written the dialogues. Some of his other films include Drohkaal, Woh Chhokri and Yeh Woh Manzil To Nahin. (UNI) |

Crorepati games: Appealing to greed in average Indian NEW DELHI, Oct 14: The launch of Zee TVs Sawaal Dus Crore Ka to challenge the supremacy of Kaun Banega Crorepati on Star Plus has evoked mixed response from the viewers, but its presenter Anupam Kher who is himself a talented actor says he has no illusions about the challenge before him. Mr Kher, who hosts the programme together with actress Manisha Koirala, told UNI in an interview that I cannot match the name of our megastar Amitabh Bachchan, and can only attempt to use my talent to the best of my capacity. He said it was also important that the participants should not be dwarfed by the ambience or the presence of a individual. I am sure they are not overawed by me, he added. He said any anchor could only add to a show, but should not become the main attraction. Emphasising that it was always the concept that worked, and not any presenter, he said the Zee TVs game show was totally Indian on concept and worked on the power of zero exemplified by Aryabhatta. He said though the Zee TV programme was the biggest game show in TV history, it was also a game of knowledge and skill. He added that when he was offered the show, he had met Mr Bachchan to seek his blessings. The game show conceived by Gajendra Singh, which had its debut last night, is in three stages: A first stage when twentyone participants are asked some questions, a second stage when the semi-finalists three are quizzed, and the final with one of them entering the money zone. The first two rounds are buzzer rounds during which the participants move from Rs one to Rs ten upto Rs 10,000, adding a zero for each correct answer. The finalist then goes on to answer the remaining questions in which a zero is added for the correct reply. As in the other game show, three trump cards are offered though these are somewhat different. It was to be expected that other channels would react and come up with their own versions when Kaun Banega Crorepati started cutting into their viewership. Actually, the concept had first come as double oquits more than five years ago on Zee TV, which is Star TVs biggest rival among the private satellite TV channels. But the amount made Zee TV come up with the Malamaal show with prizes of Rs two lakhs each night, which they claimed was in celebration of their seventh year of telecasts and which ended earlier this month. Sabe TV owned by the Adhikari Brothers, have also entered the fray with Jab Khelo Sab Khelo from October 30 which will be presented by their favourite anchorperson Shekhar Suman, who excels in comedy and minickry and promises to lend a lighter touch to the show. Lest interest flags in Kaun Banega Crorepati, Star TV first exhibited their first real Crorepati (twentyseven-year old Mumbai boy Harshvardhan Nawathe), and now popular stars Aamir Khan and Sonali Bendre have reportedly won Rs 75 lakhs amongst them in a Diwali special. Aamir and Sonali have decided to donate their prizes to Cry and St Catherines home respectively. (The episode will be telecast on October 26). Both Zee TV and Sabe claim that their shows are interactive, transparent and totally indian in concept. Viewers of sabe in eleven cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune, Ludhiana, Kanpur, Lucknow and Nagpur - will be able to just make a local call in their respective cities to answer the quiz questions and win lakhs of rupees, and periodically win the bumper of Rs 1.25 crore. The telephone numbers in Mumbai and Delhi are 9392777, Calcutta 3592777, Bangalore 2882777, Nagpur 549955, Pune 4377999, Kanpur 302999, Ludhiana 535377 and Lucknow 800100. Zee TV has asked aspirants of the Rs 10 crore prize to either send in their entries by postcard to twelve cities notified by them - Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Patna, Ludhiana, Indore, Jaipur, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Nagpur and Bangalore - at Postbag 12345 in each city, or enter by logging in to websites zeetelevision.Com, zeenext.Com and zeelearn.Com to vie for the prizes.
