JAIPUR, Oct 24: Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has directed officials not to make any arrangements for decorative lightings on his official residence on the occasion of Diwali in view of drought conditions in the state.

No festive lightings were arranged at the official residence of the CM last year too because of drought, an official release said here today.

Gehlot called upon the people to celebrate Diwali with simplicity and austerity as a large part of the state’s population was facing hardships due to drought following failure of monsoon rains for the third consecutive year. (PTI)

EC demands funds for voting machines

NEW DELHI, Oct 24: The Election Commission today asked Government to expedite release of funds for purchase of 1.5 lakh Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for use in the Assembly elections scheduled early next year.

Chief Election Commissioner M S Gill spoke to Law Minister Arun Jaitley and requested him to take up the issue on a priority basis, sources said.

Stating that the Centre had already cleared a proposal to purchase 1.5 lakh more EVMs at a cost of Rs 150 crore, the CEC told Jaitley that any delay would hamper deployment of EVMs in time in the states going to polls early next year, the sources said.

Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam and Pondicherry are slated to go for Assembly polls early next year.

Jaitley also assured gill that he would take up the matter with the Government as early as possible, the sources said.

Chattisgarh Assembly session to be held
at Raipur Town Hall

RAIPUR, Oct 24: The Town Hall of Raipur, where the first session of the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly will be held, was built in 1890.

The foundation stone of the "Victoria Jubilee Town Hall" was laid by Mr A Meckenzie, Chief Commissioner of the then Central Province in 1887.

Another marble plaque, erected inside the high-domed hall, indicate that the Town Hall was erected in 1889 under the direction of Col. Bryce Thomas, Deputy Commissioner, Raipur.

The Town Hall was formally opened by Mr A H L Fraser in April 1890.

The Town Hall was constructed with the donations from the then feudatory chiefs of Chhattisgarh and other local bodies.

The donors included: Raipur District Council (Rs 6000), Raipur Municipal Committee (Rs 6000), Raja Balram Das, feudatory chief of Rajnandgaon (Rs 2000), Raja Kanhyalal, feudatory chief of Khairagarh (Rs 1500), Raja Narhar Deo, feudatory chief of Kanker (Rs 700), Mahant Laxman Das, chief of Chuikhadan (Rs 1000), Jeypal Singh, zamindar of Dondilohara (Rs 500), and Thakur Than Singh, zamindar of Gunderdehi (Rs 500).

Three years ago, the Raipur Municipal Corporation had renovated the Town Hall at a cost of Rs 13 lakh and at present the civic body is refurbishing the building at a cost of Rs 7 lakh. (UNI)

Film with Kashmir backdrop for simultaneous
premiere in London

NEW DELHI, Oct 24: A Hindi feature film set against the backdrop of militancy in Kashmir that won praise from President K R Narayanan when he saw it is to have a simultaneous premiere in London and the United States later this week.

Mr Narayanan, accompanied by members of his family and senior functionaries, after seeing it over the weekend, discussed the subject of the film, ‘Mission Kashmir’ with its executive producer Vir Chopra, producer-director Vidhu Vinod Chopra, and stars Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt and Sonali Kulkarni.

Sony entertainment television is making its foray into film distribution by holding a premiere of this film at the Piccadily Plaza in London on ‘Diwali’, a day before it is released in Indian theatres. This will be followed by a champagne reception at the Laugham Hotel in West end. The next day, the film will be premiered at the Loews Theatre at Times Square, Manhattan in New York, followed by a reception at the renowned Marriot Marquis in Manhattan. Both occasions will be attended by the producer-director and the main cast.

In an interview, Mr Vidhu Vinod Chopra told UNI that the film was primarily about the loss of ‘Kashmiriyat’ which was all about communal amity, rather than about the present situation. Vidhu, who was born in Kashmir, said the story of the film came to him on a visit to the valley when while moving in a Shikara he had visions of a blown-up Shikara flashing across his mind. Later, author Vikram Chandra spoke of similar experiences and so the duo decided to translate it into a film.

Mr Chopra denied that he had once against turned to action films because his films ‘Kareeb’ and ‘1942- a love story’ had not fared as well as his earlier ‘Parinda’ which was an action film and won him a national award. He said ‘Mission Kashmir’ had been made because he believed in the theme. He was confident that the message of the film would get through.

Addressing a press meet earlier, Mr Vir Chopra denied that there was any controversy with regard to the song ‘Boomro Boomro’ as it was just a word meaning ‘Bhanwra’ (moths).

The film’s stars Hrithik Roshan - who had signed this film even before the release of his debut film ‘Kaho Na Pyar Hai’ - Sanjay Dutt and Sonali Kulkarni said it was clear that the filmmaker greatly believed in his theme as they had felt greatly inspired.

Sonali later told UNI that she had so far acted in 13 films in about five languages during her seven-year career in films. Sonali was on stage in Pune when she started getting film roles. Her other films include ‘Daayera’, ‘Mukti’, ‘Chelluvi’ and ‘Dr Ambedkar’.

Atul Tiwari who has written the dialogues of the film said the fact that he hails from Lucknow helped him as he was fluent with urdu. But he had to learn some Kashmiri words for use in the film. He was chosen by Mr Vidhu Vinod Chopra who had seen ‘Shaheed Uddham Singh’ for which Atul had written the dialogues. Some of his other films include ‘Drohkaal’, ‘Woh Chhokri’ and ‘Yeh Woh Manzil To Nahin’. (UNI)

Fernandes to visit Arunachal this week

BAREILLY (UP), Oct 24: Defence Minister George Fernandes today said he would visit Arunachal Pradesh later this week to make an on-the-spot study of statements made by Chief Minister Mukut Mithi of frequent Chinese incursions into the state.

"I presume when the Chief Minister speaks he has adequate information," Fernades told reporters referring to Mithi’s statement earlier this month about reports of such incursions.

He, however, clarified that there "has not been anything" from military sources to this effect "nor was there any reason for tension or stand off on the border".

Fernandes, who was speaking to newsmen after presentation of colours to two air force units here, said his visit to Arunachal was primarily aimed at looking into problems of lack of communications in the sensitive border region.

"The road communication in particular has been a really neglected in the area for decades," he remarked.

On the northern sector, Fernandes, who recently visited forward posts in Jammu and Kashmir, said the situation was "okay" there.

Summing up his meeting with the unified command in the state, he said "Army and the security forces are on top of the situation".

Commenting on Pakistani media reports of Pakistan Army undertaking a major exercise along the Rann of Kutch and facing the Rajasthan border involving nine divisions, the minister said "there was no substance to these reports".

The exercise is apparently taking place 75 km away from the Indian border and obviously there was no need for them to intimate Indians, he said.

Fernandes said according to estimates "more than a division of troops" were involved in war games which he levelled as routine. (PTI)

HC admits Rao’ appeal, issues notice to CBI

NEW DELHI, Oct 24: Delhi High Court today admitted for hearing former Prime Minister P V Narasimha’s appeal against his conviction in the JMM MPs bribery case and issued notice to CBI for filing reply by November seven.

Rao’s counsel R K Anand told Justice R S Sodhi that the trial court has "erred" both on facts and law while holding the former Prime Minister guilty and sentencing him to three years’ rigorous imprisonment.

He said the trial judge had based his order of conviction solely on the statement of approver Shailendra Mahato and "erred" in giving him pardon.

The proceedings for granting pardon to Mahato were not followed as per the law laid down by the Supreme Court, he claimed.

Anand said according to the Supreme Court ruling, "if the pardon is granted illegally then approver’s statement has no value". The court after hearing brief argument by Anand, observed that "if this was the situation, then there is nothing for CBI for basking in glory. How can a person be found guilty on such an evidence".

"If this is all you are challenging, then you should be more keen to file an appeal," the court observed.

A special CBI court on October 13 had sentenced Rao and his former cabinet colleague Buta Singh to three years’ RI and imposed a fine of Rs two lakh on each of them.

The trial court, however, stayed operation of the judgement and granted bail to both the convicts till November eight enabling them to file appeals in the High Court.

The court had already admitted Buta Singh’s appeal for hearing last week. (PTI)

Narayanan presents Colours to Air Force
Administrative College

BAREILLY (UTTAR PRADESH), Oct 24: President K R Narayanan today presented ‘Colours’ to the Air Force Administrative College here and the ‘Standard’ to 35 squadron, which is the only one in the Indian Air Force to have operated two different types of combat aircraft, the Canberra and MiG 21M.

The Presidential honour in the form of colours or standard is given to recognise selfless dedication, professionalism and sacrifice.

Noting that a strong defence was essential for peace and no nation could prosper without it, President Narayanan said "we do not wish or encourage conflict, but should it be forced upon us, I am confident that our armed forces will rise to the occasion valiantly and bring glory to the nation as they have always done in the past".

He said the two units here have continued their relentless pursuit of excellence and have set an example for others to emulate.

The Air Force Administrative College, which has been in existence for over 50 years, enjoys the distinction of being one of the oldest training institutions for officers in the IAF. Through its portals have passed out a very large number of officers, many of whom are occupying high offices in the IAF.

Raised in 1958 as a Bomber Squadron with Canberras, 35 Squadron has a specialised role today. That it has operated two different type of combat aircraft was a unique legacy of the unit, Mr Narayanan said.

UP Governor Suraj Bhan, Defence Minister George Fernandes, Minister of State for Defence Production Harin Pathak and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal A Y Tipnis were present during the presentation ceremony. (UNI)

Crorepati games: Appealing to greed in average Indian

NEW DELHI, Oct 14: The launch of Zee TV’s ‘Sawaal Dus Crore Ka’ to challenge the supremacy of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ on Star Plus has evoked mixed response from the viewers, but its presenter Anupam Kher who is himself a talented actor says he has no illusions about the challenge before him.

Mr Kher, who hosts the programme together with actress Manisha Koirala, told UNI in an interview that ‘I cannot match the name of our megastar Amitabh Bachchan, and can only attempt to use my talent to the best of my capacity.’ He said it was also important that the participants should not be ‘dwarfed’ by the ambience or the presence of a individual. ‘I am sure they are not overawed by me,’ he added. He said any anchor could only add to a show, but should not become the main attraction.

Emphasising that it was always the concept that worked, and not any presenter, he said the Zee TV’s game show was totally Indian on concept and worked on the power of zero ‘exemplified by Aryabhatta’. He said though the Zee TV programme was the biggest game show in TV history, it was also a game of knowledge and skill. He added that when he was offered the show, he had met Mr Bachchan to seek his blessings.

The game show conceived by Gajendra Singh, which had its debut last night, is in three stages: A first stage when twentyone participants are asked some questions, a second stage when the semi-finalists three are quizzed, and the final with one of them ‘entering the money zone’. The first two rounds are buzzer rounds during which the participants move from Rs one to Rs ten upto Rs 10,000, adding a ‘zero’ for each correct answer. The finalist then goes on to answer the remaining questions in which a ‘zero’ is added for the correct reply. As in the other game show, three trump cards are offered though these are somewhat different.

It was to be expected that other channels would react and come up with their own versions when ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ started cutting into their viewership. Actually, the concept had first come as ‘double o’quits’ more than five years ago on Zee TV, which is Star TV’s biggest rival among the private satellite TV channels. But the amount made Zee TV come up with the ‘Malamaal’ show with prizes of Rs two lakhs each night, which they claimed was in celebration of their seventh year of telecasts and which ended earlier this month.

Sabe TV owned by the Adhikari Brothers, have also entered the fray with ‘Jab Khelo Sab Khelo’ from October 30 which will be presented by their favourite anchorperson Shekhar Suman, who excels in comedy and minickry and promises to lend a lighter touch to the show.

Lest interest flags in ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’, Star TV first exhibited their first real ‘Crorepati’ (twentyseven-year old Mumbai boy Harshvardhan Nawathe), and now popular stars Aamir Khan and Sonali Bendre have reportedly won Rs 75 lakhs amongst them in a Diwali special. Aamir and Sonali have decided to donate their prizes to Cry and St Catherine’s home respectively. (The episode will be telecast on October 26).

Both Zee TV and Sabe claim that their shows are interactive, transparent and totally indian in concept. Viewers of sabe in eleven cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune, Ludhiana, Kanpur, Lucknow and Nagpur - will be able to just make a local call in their respective cities to answer the quiz questions and win lakhs of rupees, and periodically win the bumper of Rs 1.25 crore. The telephone numbers in Mumbai and Delhi are 9392777, Calcutta 3592777, Bangalore 2882777, Nagpur 549955, Pune 4377999, Kanpur 302999, Ludhiana 535377 and Lucknow 800100.

Zee TV has asked aspirants of the Rs 10 crore prize to either send in their entries by postcard to twelve cities notified by them - Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Patna, Ludhiana, Indore, Jaipur, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Nagpur and Bangalore - at Postbag 12345 in each city, or enter by logging in to websites zeetelevision.Com, zeenext.Com and zeelearn.Com to vie for the prizes.
