The players of Government Degree College, Kathua, who brought laurels to the College by winning the Inter-Collegiate Tournament in Kabaddi held at Jammu University. The exuberant players beat the MAM College by an impressive margin of 15 points in their first match. In the second match, Kathua College thrashed Udhampur Degree College by 20 points and in the final the Kabaddi team of Kathua College drubbed the PG Department, JU by 12 points and won the championship. The Principal Dr O S Sudan welcomed and congratulated the team for glorious victory and said that the victory was the result of dedication of Dr A K Malhotra and Mr Flail Singh, Physical Director of the College.

4 Indians among seeded players in Asian Cup TT

MUMBAI, Oct 19: Four Indians, including former men’s national champion Chetan Baboor, are among 16 seeded players in the men’s and women’s singles of the $25,000 prize money Asian Cup Table Tennis Championship starting here tomorrow.

Organising committee secretary Yatin Tipnis, told reporters here last night that Karnataka based Baboor, who is ranked 84 in the world, is seeded third behind top seeded Cheung Yuk (32) and second seed Leung Chu Yan (58), both from Hong Kong.

‘Bengal based Soumyadeep Roy (394) is seeded eighth behind fourth seed Yanagida Toshinori of Japan (248), fifth seed Cai Xiao Li (276) of Singapore, sixth seed Mehran Ahadi (352) of Iran and seventh seed Ryusuke Sakamoto (375) of Japan in the men’s singles. Chennai based left hander S Raman is the third Indian in the fray’, Tipnis added.

‘In the women’s singles bengal paddlers Mouma Das (214) and Poulomi Ghatak (246) are seeded seventh and eighth respectively while Korean Kim Kyung Ha (42), Iau Suifei (55) of Hong Kong and Zhang Xue Ling (56) of Singapore are the first three seeds respectively’, he said.

‘Kwok Fong Fong (61) of Hong Kong, Tan Paey Fem (85) of Singapore and Rossy Pretivi Dipoyenti (124) of Indonasia are seeded fourth, fifth and sixth respectively’, he added. (PTI)

JAMMU, Oct 20: Last year’s champion Kamal Rohmetra today entered into the semi-final of the senior snooker of the 10th District Jammu and Kashmir Billiards and Snooker Championship being played at M A Stadium, here.

The double title holder of last year, Kamal Rohmetra today edged out Nitin Khurana by 3-0 in the best of five frames. Kamal playing spectacular game maintained lead over Khurana till end and recorded a morale boosting victory with scores 67-9, 85-30, 62-35. From the very beginning Kamal played aggressively and totally decimated opponent by pumping in scores after scores.

It was only due to the brilliant and marvelous snooker that Khurana received a potential killer blow in the shape of 3-0 defeat. Kamal till end of the match continued to pounce on the opportunities coming his way and totally dominated the match.

On the other hand, Khurana despite of hectic efforts could not come out of the pressure and played some patchy games thus receiving a serious set back at the hands of Kamal.

In the semi-final of junior billiards, last year’s runner up in the senior snooker, Jyoti Anand today routed Deepak Bajaj. Anand showing brilliant billiards beat Deepak Bajaj by 36 points. This match saw closely contested fight as both the players were seen playing marvelous billiards. The match which lasted for 90 minutes saw best billiards as both the players pounced on every opportunity that came their way and maintained attacking performance to dominate the game.

Deepak Bajaj received a blow in the last minutes as he failed to contain the attacking performance of Anand thus suffering defeat by 36 points. Anand scored total 317 points while Deepak Bajaj could secure 281 points. Anand by registering 36 points victory over Bajaj entered into the final of the junior billiards.

JKWA postpones its election

JAMMU, Oct 20: The J&K Wrestling Association has postponed its election which was earlier announced to be held on November 4 at M A Stadium.

The said election has been postponed because of the inability expressed by the observer WFI and representatives of some affiliated units to attend the meeting at the stipulated date and time. The next date of election will be announced later.

Handball player passes away

JAMMU, Oct 20: National level handball player Manav Sharma of Janipur who met with a fatal accident 15 days ago today succumbed to his injuries.

He was talented handball player and represented the state in School National Championship held at Jallandhar in 1998, Sub-Junior Nations at Bangalore in 1999 and Renukot, Uttar Pradesh this year and Junior Nationals at Vishakha Patnam. He had recently joined his training under the guidance of Mr J S Soodan, Chief National Handball coach at Mini Stadium, Jammu.

The players and coaches in a condolence meeting held here today paid tributes to the departed soul. Mr Soodan, S M Bali, secretary general Handball Player of India and Mr Kuldeep Singh, secretary J&K Handball Association confirmed that Manav Sharma was a future talent and his demise is a great loss to the State.

Farmer international player and present coach of Indian women team Mr Vivek Khajuria also paid homage to the departed soul.

Open Volleyball floodlight Champ from October 22

UDHAMPUR, Oct 20: Housing Colony Volleyball Club, here is organising 4th Open Volleyball Championship in the floodlights at Chander Shekhar Azad Mini Stadium, here from October 22 to November 2.

In all, 24 teams including those of belt forces, police and other clubs have confirmed their participation.

Talking to EXCELSIOR, the organising secretary of the championship, Mr Anil Kumar said that entry will be free for all in the matches which will be played on Knock out basis.

The tournament is being held under the auspices of J&K Volleyball Association.

Men’s Kho-Kho team named for NZ Inter-University

JAMMU, Oct 20: The Directorate of Physical Education, University of Jammu has named the 12-member Kho-Kho team for the forthcoming North-zone Inter-University Kho-Kho Tournament being held at Bhubneshwar from October 28.

According to Mr Madan Mohan Sharma, Assistant Director, Physical Education, the team included Satish Yadav from Degree College Kathua; Sandeep Kumar, Gurpreet Singh, Rajesh Sharma, Ravi Kumar Dubey from MAM College; Santosh Kumar, Vinod Kumar, Sukhvinder Singh from GGM Science College; Gagan Kumar and Vijay Mangotra from SPMR College of Commerce; Rakesh Kumar from Degree College, Udhampur.

Besides this, two stands byes, Neeraj Malhotra and Jasvinder Singh have also been named from MAM College, he added.

Chandan, Vishal help PG Deptt win opening Handball tie

JAMMU, Oct 20: Six goals each by Chandan Singh Chowhan and Vishal helped the Post Graduate Departments beat Degree College Kathua 21-18 in the opening tie of the Inter-college Handball competitions which began at University of Jammu grounds, here today.

Even though, Kathua College was playing against an experienced side having a couple of international players, but they resisted on every move.

From Degree College, Kathua, Nasib Singh netted highest five goals. Messrs Sudesh Kumar, Dev Raja, Surinder Kapoor and Gopal officiated the inaugural match.

In another scheduled match, Degree College, Udhampur got walkover against Degree College Poonch.

In all, eight teams are taking part in the Men’s Handball.

Meanwhile, in girls section, PG Departments got walkover against Degree College, Kathua in the opening tie. Kathua College girls could not turn up at the venue, thus the match was awarded in favour of PG Departments by the organisers.

In the girls section, only five colleges have confirmed their participation.

GCW Gandhi Nagar beat Parade to retain Kho-Kho trophy

JAMMU, Oct 20: Government College for Women (GCW), Gandhi Nagar today defeated GCW, Parade in a one sided final to retain the Inter-college Kho-Kho trophy.

With this victory, GCW, Gandhi Nagar has retained the Kho-Kho trophy for the seventh consecutive year.

Today’s final was a one sided affair as Gandhi Nagar College girls never allowed the opponents to catch hold of them through out the game. While, on the other hand they proved to be the most efficient in sending out the Parade College girls.

Giving little chance to the opponents to even open their account, Gandhi Nagar College won the match by one turn and 15 points.

International player, Tarandeep Anand, who represented India in SAF Games made it a big win for Gandhi Nagar. She also got good support from Vandana, who played for highest nine minutes.

Although, Parade College failed to open the account, but Vaneeta and Tarmeet Raina played confidently.

Messrs, Ajay Gupta and B S Tirthi officiated the today’s final. The competitions were organised by the Department of Physical Education, University of Jammu under the overall supervision of Mr Madan Mohan Sharma, Assistant Director.

Meanwhile, the Directorate of Physical Education has also selected the probables for the coaching camp prior to the North-Zone Inter-University competitions beginning from October 30. The camp will be held at GCW, Gandhi Nagar under the guidance of Mr B S Tirthi.

The selected probables included Tarandeep Anand, Yasmeen, Vandana, Nimisha Rajput, Rukhsana, Daljeet Kour, Ramneet Kour and Nusrat Khan from GCW, Gandhi Nagar. From Parade college, Tarmeet Raina, Vanita Suri, Sunaina Rani and Sarika have been named for the camp.

Besides them, Kathua, Poonch and Udhampur college too have been given due representation. From Degree College, Kathua, Manjeet Kour, Reetu Bala and from GCW, Udhampur, Rashmi and Rakhi and from Degree College, Poonch, Yasmeen Akhare, Ramandeep Kour, Gurdeep Kour and Fazie Mughal have been selected for the camp.
