The 2 run outs turned match around: Gaekwad MUMBAI, Oct 17: The run outs of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid were the turning point in the ICC Knock-Out final against the Kiwis, which India lost narrowly, at Nairobi on Sunday, coach Anshuman Gaekwad said today. "Both Sachin and Saurav (Ganguly) had given the team a flying start and we were hoping for a score of 300-310 before the two run outs took place in quick succession and we could manage just 264 runs in the end," he told PTI here after the teams return from Nairobi. "These things (run outs) happen and it was unfortunate that it happened during the final and that too when things were going very well for us," he added. When queried why medium pacer Venkatesh Prasad, the most economical Indian bowler in the final, was underbowled, Gaekwad said "yes, I think Venky should have been given his full quota of ten overs as he had just conceded 20 runs from his six overs and had also picked up two crucial wickets". "However, our boys performed brilliantly and there was a marked improvement in all departments of the game including fielding. We did a world of good for our reputation by beating world champions Australia and talented outfit South Africa quite convincingly in our earlier matches but slipped at the last hurdle," he added. Praising the performance of debutants Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan, the former opening batsman said "it was heartening to see the youngsters play without any pressure on foreign soil in their first outing for the country". Football Tourney Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 17: MAM College today won the second semi-final football match of the Inter-Collegiate Football Tournament being played at Jammu University grounds. Taking full benefit of the poor performance of the Science College, the players of MAM College registered remarkable victory over the opponent by 3 goals to nil. The self goal made by the Science College player in the first half put the team in dolodrum and despite every efforts Science College remained under pressure and succumbed before the game of brilliance by the MAM College players. Due to the poor defence by the Science College players, the third goal came in the 62nd minutes. Till the end of the match there seemed to be no match to the MAM College players who forced the Science College to taste defeat by 3-0 and brought laurels for the MAM College. Science College which earlier showed very good performance in the league matches today played patchy games with few flashes of brilliance. Before the start of the semi-final match, two minute silence was observed on the sad demise of former Indian football player Mr Jarnail Singh of Punjab, who played for India many times and brought laurels to the country by winning Asian Gold medal twice. He remained the coach of Indian teams many times. During his best career, he played in West Bengal in the most famous club Mohan Baghan. He retired as Joint Director, Sports, Punjab Government. |
