India fumble at the post, Kiwis win 1st major tourney

NAIROBI, Oct 15: India fumbled at the finishing post and allowed New Zealand to win the ICC Knock Out Cricket Trophy, being outmanoeuvred by the Kiwis powered by a great all-round display by Chris Cairns including an unbeaten 102.

The Indian team’s golden run, that saw them beat Australia and South Africa on the way to the final, came to an end when it mattered most. They have only themselves to blame.

New Zealand won by four wickets with two balls to spare, despite a blazing batting start by India which went waste due to poor follow-up in the slog overs, wayward bowling and missing of crucial run out chances.

The Kiwis romped home making 265 for six in 49.4 overs in response to India’s 264 for six off 50 overs for their first major tournament win.

Skipper Saurav Ganguly hit his second successive century (114) after his team had been put in to bat and Tendulkar also got really going today before being run out for a strokeful 69.

Thereafter, the Indians lost momentum and made only 264 although they appeared set for a total of around 300 at one stage.

It was a fitting finale to the tournament after both teams had reached the title clash razing down giants on the way.

India beat World Cup champions Australia and defending champions South Africa in the previous two matches while New Zealand humbled Pakistan in the semi-finals after seeing off Zimbabwe, their recent nemesis, at the quarter-final stage.

India were on course to well-deserved victory till a 122-run sixth wicket partnership between man-of-the-match Chris Cairns, coming into the match with an injury, and Chris Harris (46) took the game away from them.

Coming at five down for 132 with India back in command after New Zealand at one stage seemed to be running away with the match, Harris took time to settle down but provided the much-needed support to cairns who was in danger of running out of partners had the regular fall of wickets continued.

Cairns and Harris were content picking up singles and twos and though the asking rate kept climbing they never lost sight of the task ahead of them.

Cairns blasted eight fours and two huge sixes, one each off Tendulkar and Kumble, to keep the asking rate from going out of control.

The Indians lost their nerve during the slog overs and were involved in a couple of misfieldings and missed run-out chances to help the Kiwis’ cause.

With just 13 runs required from the last two overs, it seemed a cakewalk for New Zealand even when Harris was caught superbly by Robin Singh off Venkatesh Prasad for a well-made 46. Cairns, who completed his century with a single in the 48th over, completed the formalities in the company of Adam Parore (3).

New Zealand started their run-chase disastrously losing opener Craig Spearman (3) with only six runs on the board. Spearman was caught brilliantly by Yuvraj Singh off Venkatesh prasad to give India an early breakthrough.

Prasad struck again four overs later when he trapped Kiwi captain Stephen Fleming, going through a bad patch, leg before for five runs.

Nathan Astle (37) and Roger Twose, the hero of New Zealand’s victories over Zimbabwe and Pakistan, threatened to repeat their semi-final performance with a 45-run third wickekt stand before Anil Kumble, the match winner on so many occasions, dismissed both of them to bring the advantage back to India.

Astle was the first to go, caught by Robin Singh for 37 off 48 balls that included five fours. Danger man Twose followed soon after stumped by Dahiya for a 35-ball 31. He struck four fours.

Kiwi batsmen never let the scoring rate go down despite the regular fall of wickets and all it required was at least one batsman get his head down and bat right through the innings.

They got two with Cairns and Harris doing that job admirably well after Tendulkar had got rid of Craig McMillan, caught by Ganguly for 15, to leave New Zealand in deep trouble.

Earlier, put in to bat - a bold decision by Fleming considering their opponents’ record batting first - India wasted a fantastic start by Saurav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar to get restricted at 264 for six, at least 20-30 runs short of what they ideally should have got.

Ganguly, who hit his second straight one day century to take his tally to 15, and Tendulkar got off to a blazing start putting on 37 runs in the first four overs before Chris Cairns calmed them down.

The first six scoring shots by Tendulkar were sweetly timed boundaries and the fourth one made him the highest run-getter in one-day cricket surpassing former skipper Mohd Azharuddin’s mark of 9378 runs.

The Indians continued to plunder runs and put on a stand of 141 runs from 26 overs before a terrible mixup with Ganguly resulted in Tendulkar being found out of crease while trying to sneak in a single. Tendulkar’s 83 ball 69 contained ten fours and a six.

Similar fate awaited Rahul Dravid, when after adding 61 runs for second wicket with Ganguly, he was run out for 22.

And when Ganguly was out trying to accelerate in the slog over, the Indians’ chances of posting a 300-plus target vanished.

The rest of the batsmen were out trying to improvise and go for the big hits and in the end India were fortunate to finish with a total of 264 runs. (PTI)

Paes, Bhupathi win Japan Open doubles

TOKYO, Oct 15: India’s Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi clinched their first title of the season by winning the men’s doubles title at the $970,000 Japan Open Tennis tournament here today.

The unseeded pair, the 1999 French Open and Wimbledon champions, edged past the fifth-seeded Australian-American duo of Michael Hill and Jeff Tarango 6-4 6-7 (1/7) 6-3.

It was the first time a Japanese title had gone to India since Ramesh Krishnan won the men’s singles in 1986.

"The first thing I’d like to say is, I think that the Indian express is rolling again and I’m happy we played some good tennis today," said Paes.

"Jeff and Michael played really a good match today, they returned really well, and it made it a lot more difficult for us, but the level of tennis today was the highest of all this week and I’m happy with it.

"In the third set, we managed to have a good break at 3-4 and I have to say that this tournament gives us a lot of confidence."

Paes and Bhupathi had their finest season last year, becoming the first team to reach the finals of all four grand slams in the same year since Frank Sedgman and Ken Mcgregor in 1952.

They reached number one ranking in April and finished the year on the same level.

But since then Paes and Bhupathi have been struggling with injuries, playing only five tournaments this season.

"This year, we both had a lot of injuries, so it makes it much more special winning the Japan Open, it was the first one back together again since we are both in good health," said Paes.

The pair are one of the most popular partnerships in the game and have been surrounded by fans throughout the week.

Bhupathi won the 1997 French Open mixed doubles title with Japan’s Rika Hiraki and the US Open with Ai Sugiyama last year. (AFP)

Age scandal rocks Assam cricket

GUWAHATI, Oct 15: After the match fixing scandal in cricket, now it is the time for the age scandal.

Believe it or not the doctors of the Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) have found 21 of the total 26 shortlisted players of under-19 Assam cricket team are overaged. These include Palash Jyoti Das and Mrigen Talukdar who represented India earlier this year while winning the Asia Cup.

Assam, a surprise force in the junior and a non-entity in the seniors, has always been on the eye of suspicion of other state’s associations.

The BCCI, this time had issued strict guidelines but the Asam Cricket Association (ACA) adhered to 21 of the 26 players had been found using fake age certificates. The ACA sent all the 26 to the GMCH on Thursday and according to medical report among the whole batch only five players were found to be under-19 years of age, said the ACA sources said.

Ironically all those 26 have at least two-three years still to play in the under-19 level as per the age certificates.

According to GMCH source, some players, who last year played under-15 years group, were found to be over 20 years. The medical reports were prepared on the basis of physical test conducted in the Forensic Medicine Department of the GMCH where X-rays were taken and teeth of the players examined to determine the ages.

The ACA has summoned 39 more players for another camp as their first zonal match against Bihar starts on October 20 next. (UNI)

Senior snooker category begins
Puri to take on Azad in junior snooker final

Excelsior Sports Correspondent

JAMMU, Oct 15: Continuing his winning spree in the junior snooker category, Nitin Puri today registered remarkable victory over last year’s runner up in the senior category Jyoti Anand in the on-going 10th District Jammu and Kashmir Billiards and Snooker Tournament.

In the second semi-final in junior snooker category, Nitin Puri put a gutsy performance and beat Jyoti Anand, who was the last year’s runner-up in the senior category, by 3-1 in best of five frames to enter the final in junior snooker category.

Though Jyoti Anand gave tough fight and won the first set 67-43 yet Nitin Puri didn’t lose patience and put his every efforts to control the game. The last years runner-up played a patchy game today showing only a few flashes of brilliance and failed to break Nitin Puri’s grip over the match. Anand played erratically in the last three sets and lacked concentration resulting into defeat by 3-1.

In contrast to Anand, Puri pounced on the opportunities coming his way to take the total control of the match and won the last three sets by 61-46, 66-39, 47-41 to go through the final. He will clash with Nishant Azad in the final in the junior category later on.

Meanwhile, the snooker in senior category started today and three matches were played in best of five frames.

In first match, Sunil Jain beat Jatin Khurana by 3-0 with scores 74-63, 36-27, 48-25. This match saw excellent performance from Jain. From the start of the match, he maintained attacking show and didn’t give any chance to Khurana to play freely. Jain, trailing 3-0, put up some astonishing display of power snooker.

Later in the second match, Sunil Jain, who earlier defeated Jatin Khurana received set-back at the hands of Sohail Khalid. Jain won one set while Sohail claimed 3 sets thus winning the match by 3-1 with scores 55-62, 48-36, 63-28, 45-32.

Sunny Arora thrashed Vikas Pandotra by 3-0 in the third match. The scores were 61-16, 52-34, 72-16.

Messrs Raveez Ahmed, Shander Dass and Surjeet Singh acted as markers.
