War among Satellite Channels

Sir,

Now-a-days, the competition between the satellite channels is increasing rapidly. Many new satellite channels are coming into existence these days. Every channel is trying its best to attract the maximum viewership. Zee, Zony, Star etc. are broadcasting many megaserials and countdown shows to increase their viewership.

And the recent step in this direction is made by star plus by broadcasting 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' the world's biggest ever gameshow. It is a very interesting and exciting gameshow and its presentation is really very unique hosted by the India's biggest star Amitabh Bachchan. His way of talking, laughing and asking questions is mignificent. Every person, male or female, rich or poor, wants to watch this serial. Between 9 pm to 10 p.m. the roads become silent and everyone having a cable connection, watches this serial. This results in a rapid increase in the viewership of star Plus. Now many other satellite channels are introducing such game shows.

I hope that by watching this competition, Doordarshan, the national channel, will also introduce some new serials to be remain in competition.

Some suggestions

Sir,

The Institute of Public Administration (IPA) J&K Branch organised a seminar other day at Jammu in which healthy and deliberations took place. Seminar has been a right step at most appropriate time, when working of the Indian Constitution is under Review. Seminar has made some innovative suggestions to the Constitution Review Commission. I would like to add few more points, which justify these suggestions.

Use of money power : With imposition of some minimum qualification for contesting elections to State legislature and Parliament use of black money power can be checked to a greater extent. With this, mafias will get discouraged and they will have the feeling and idea that money power cannot make every thing possible including winning the elections.

Use of Muscle power : Flouting all principles of democracy some illiterate or semi literate candidates resort to muscle power. They use goondas, criminals and history sheeters to terrorise the voters which defeats the very purpose of elections. These illiterate political leaders think that money and muscle power can win them the elections. Well educated people well, perhaps, restrict themselves from resorting to such unlawful activities.

Improve quality of debates :- Educated people if sent to legislatures will improve the quality of debates in the legislatures. They will discuss potential issues having social and economic ramifications.

Knowledge of political science law and economics is must for political leaders- A legislator must have knowledge of all these three subjects but knowledge of at least one of these should be necessary what rules and laws a person can deliberate upon if he has no knowledge of law of the land? What contribution can he make in the economic growth, if he has no knowledge of economics. After all the aim of every activity is to impove the economic life of the society.

Constitution Review Commission should take into account these facts and prescribe some minimum qualification for contesting the elections for legislatures. It is high time that it is done now when constitution is being reviewed otherwise it will be too late.

Work is Worship

Sir,

The mantra for new century should be ''Love''. ''Loving humanity'' is greater than offering prayer to God. It has been observed that while religious serials like ''Jai Mata Ki'' ''Ramayana'' ''Mahabharata'' ''Om Nama Shivay'' etc. have been holding audience spell bound for years and people spend a lot of time in praying, they rarely perform good deeds. A person should first offer his or her services to society and then to God.

One cannot be good to God if he or she is not good to fellow human beings. Simply crowding at religious places and gatherings might not help, if the preaching discussed there do not positively influence the listeners attitude. Merely attending or listening to the words of spiritual leaders will not help. One needs to contemplate on all that is said, understand and then start practising them.

The main principle should be to serve needy and exhort people to indulge in the same. Seva (Service) is prayer and that is Bhakti (devotion).

However, one should not serve or pray for the fulfilment of a desire. Even Moksha is a desire and we should try to transcend even that. A true devotee does not seek anything in return.
