Sikh leaders favour trifurcation
SAD chief condemns Wazir’s statement

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Oct 6: State Akali Dal president Mr Suchet Singh has favoured the demand of separate state for Jammu and claimed that SAD will fight alongwith other organisations of Jammu for this cause.

In a press statement issued here today, Mr Singh said that the people of Jammu and Ladakh are facing severe discrimination since long in recruitment, training in professional colleges, political field, development and other aspects. Even this has been admitted by the Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah on the floor of the Assembly House that over 80 % employees in Civil Secretariat were from Kashmir region.

Condemning the statement issued recently by Mr Wazir from Gurudwara Parbandhak Board and Shiromani Akali Dal president jointly that Sikhs oppose this demand, the SAD chief alleged that Mr Wazir is the puppet of Dr Farooq Abdullah and is dreaming of becoming a minister. He has his own vested interest and is least bothered about the sufferings and problems of the members of Sikh community in the region. The opportunists can not be the true leaders of the masses, he maintained.

The meeting which was held here today was also attended by the intellectuals from the community. Several leaders of various Sikh organisations also participated. They stated that Sikhs of the region are strongly in favour of trifurcation of the state, with separate statehood for Jammu, homeland for Kashmiris and the Union Territory status for Ladakh.

They said that various Sikh organisations and self-styled leaders have no right to issue general statement on behalf of the Sikhs. They condemned the statement and maintained that Sikhs in general would not compromise on this issue. These tainted leaders are speaking the language of National Conference people. It may serve their purpose but such move would never serve the purpose of the general public of this region.

Mr Singh appealed the members of the Sikh community to remain cautious of the designs of these so called Sikh leaders and asked them not to be swayed by their misleading propaganda which only serves the purpose of those who are only self-centered and opportunists and dancing on the tune of Farooq Abdullah. He said that they can not befool the Sikh community members for long as they have been exposed before the public by issuing such cheap statement in a well organised press conference, which was nothing but a stage managed show of National Conference.

‘Any terrorist group can possess nuclear weapons’
Terrorism, religious fundamentalism real threats
to world: Prof Balok

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Oct 6: Religious fundamentalism and international terrorism are the real challenges before the world and it is need of the hour to evolve a mechanism to face these challenges. These views were expressed by Prof Aendrash Balok, former-Hungarian ambassador and Director Institute of Foreign Affairs while delivering a lecturer on "Global Politics And Its Impact On Asian Pacific Region" at Jammu University this evening.

Prof Balok said that terrorism and religious fundamentalism were the real dangers confronting the humanity and civil society. "Terrorism as a problem has not confined only to some countries, it is rather a global problem challenging democracy and civil society", he said but regretted that international community yet not has clear mechanism to deal this problems. Former Hungarian ambassador was of the view that international community should have to evolve a mechanism to cope with challenge of terrorism and religious fundamentalism.

Replying to a question regarding nuclear war between India and Pakistan, Director Institute of Foreign Affairs admitted that challenge of nuclear weapons has increased as nuclear trade became very open for the quite some time. "It is not a question of two nations, no body know who possesses nuclear weapon", he said and added that even a small militant group can purchase nuclear power due to openness of the trade. He termed the situation as ‘serious’ and said that it has put grave challenge on humanity.

Regarding improvement of the relation of India with United States and Russia, Prof Balok was of the view that India should have to develop equal relationship with all actors of the international forum. "Before Cold-War, India had limited choice but now the situation has changed", he said, adding "like India, Russia and United States have been facing religious fundamentalism and global terrorism.

"India is becoming an important factor and every country should have to take it into consideration in the coming days", he said while favouring permanent seat for India in Security Council. "Being a largest democracy in the world India should be given adequate representation in the world forums", he said and added that permanent seat should be given to India in Security Council to make United Nation more representative and international organisation in real sense.

Replying to another question, Prof Balok said that being a largest democracy and having expertise in Information Technology, India has advantages of globalisation and liberalisation. But Balok’s this argument was contested by Prof Rekha Choudhary, Head of the Department of Political Science, who was of the view that only elite Indian class was aware of the Information Technology while majority of the population was illiterate. She was of the view that globalisation will lead to equality in Indian society.

Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University, Prof R R Sharma, while participating in the discussion said that in India there are two perceptions about globalisation. Quoting statements of some leaders, Prof Sharma said that there is a perception that globalisatiion leads to equality at international level.
