Rising cost of books

Sir,

If not totally free of cost, books, copies, and uniforms should have been made available at lower prices. The amount charged on these things is quite high. It sends a shudder to the spine to estimate the cost on books etc. from Nursery class which is one of the worries of the parents of grassroot. Not only the cost of books etc. even the monthly fee which commences rightly from admission in the school is as heavy as anything. See a child carrying an ass load of books, copies in his satchel too heavy to carry on frail and feeble shoulders is sufficient to testify the standard and system of education. The weight of books is more heavier than the wright of the boys. Possibly the growth of private institutions, charging exorbitant fee and cost of books etc. a back breaking affair, has escaped from the notice of the Government to understand how the poor and down-trodden remains bereft of this vital need. On the one hand, parents are worried to provide education to their ward at par with others and on the other hand economic stringency and limited means crush their aspirations.

The Government is advised to look into such niceties, work out a fool proof modus operandi making education accessible to the marginalised class who become first casualty of economic recession. We need to build sound and solid infrastructure, if we mean to stamp on illiteracy enabling the needy to get educated and remove the shackles of child labour. Illiteracy and child labour are two burning problems both tantamounts to Human right violation. A matter of serious consideration.

Similar is the medical treatment. Skyrocketing prices of medicines, cost of tests, doctors fee is not generally availed of by the patients of grass root level. It will be my wishful thinking to aspire for classless society nevertheless moral code of conduct demands to extend the benefit to the extend it merits. We have numerous private nursing homes, some registered and some un-registered where common man can ill-afford to hospitalize their patients. Such inequality and discrimination generates class struggle between haves and have nots resulting in chaos, strikes, lock-ups and vandalism.

Life is divine, let us not rebuke it when the way and means are with us. The Govt is suggested to intervene in such things, thereby allowing the needy to meet their urges and aspirations.

Keeping all these things in focus, the Govt. should ask all the private educational institutions and private clinics, nursing homes to display the rate list conspicuously covering fees, cost of books, copies, admission fee & similarly for nursing homes and private clinics about rent, operation fee and other charges.

Yours etc...

Leaderless party

Sir,

Once upon a time a party used to rule the roost in the country. It was none other than the Indian National Congress. Under the chrismatic leadership of Jawahar Lal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Narasimha Rao, the party did wonders at national as well as international level. Other than the imposing of emergency and not bargaining properly in Shimla Agreement, the party did a good job for the country. It followed a successful consistent foreign policy.

But after the exit of Narasimha Government, the party is on regular decline. Even after the desperate attempt by Sonia Gandhi the party is showing downward trend. It has become a leaderless party. A party which has deviated from its real path. A party which is now compromising with its basic principles. A party with single point programme of criticising the Government for the sake of criticism whatsoever. The party has deviated from its own nuclear policy. Now the party is opposing BJP's nuclear policy whileas it was the Congress Government which did the Ist nuclear blast in 1970.

By criticising Kargil policy of NDA Government the Congress Party has lowered the image of our country. ''Vajpayee Kargil key Shaheedoon Key Zimawas hai'' by saying these words Congress party is speaking Pakistani language and strengthening Pakistan's perception about Kargil war. In Bihar Congress has totally exposed itself by helping Rabri Devi to continue jungle raj despite tooth and nail opposition from its Bihar unit. Latest is Natwar Singh's statements in USA during the Prime Minister's visit to USA. Mr Natwar Singh a seasoned diplomat (self styled shadow foreign minister of Congress Party'') has issued some strange and unwise statements in USA during Prime Minister's visit to that country. Natwar Singh has criticised and objected Mr Vajpayee's strong worded speeches in the General Assembly and in the American Congress. As per Natwar Singh Vajpayee Ji ought to have used a soft language against Pakistan. I am at loss to understand why should we do so when Pakistan is using uncivilized and unparliamentary language against India now and then.

Natwar Singh has advocated that Pakistan should be included in Tripatite talks without any pre-condition. Natwar Singh has not learnt anything as a diplomat even after repeated massacres, brutal killings, suicidal attacks and regular firing on the actual line of control. It seems mistakes as itself did during its reign. For example-during Tashkent agreement and Shimla Agreement India returned unconditionally the areas it had won during 1965 and 1971 wars respectively.

Indira Gandhi did a Himalayan blunder during Shimla Agreement by not bargaining properly. Indira could have tried to solve Kashmir problem once for all. At that time Pakistan was totally demoralised and India could have capitalised but it did not.

Again after the historic nuclear blast in 1970 Congress suddenly stopped further testing and stopped missile programme also, without taking the whole nation into confidence. This gave enough and a very good chance and time to Pakistan to get nuclear capability by hook or by crook.

Politicising everything is not good for Congress party. If Congress party wants to survive, it should stick to its basic principles. It has to be more optimistic and clear regarding some important national as well as international issues.
