Capriati beats Maleeva to win Luxembourg Open LUXEMBOURG, Oct 1: Former teen-age tennis prodigy Jennifer Capriati took another step in her comeback today when she overcame early jitters to beat Bulgarian Magdalena Maleeva in three sets in the final of the Luxembourg Open. Capriati, now 24, is trying to re-establish herself as a tennis force after dropping out of the game for several years in the 1990s because of a troubled private life. She was clearly delighted with her 4-6 6-1 6-4 win after she wrapped up the match with a clever drop shot to claim the 27,000 dollar prize. The American set a string of records as a teen-ager, including becoming the youngest grand slam finalist at Roland Garros in 1990 at age 14 and winning an olympic gold medal in 1992. But her career took a nose-dive after she was cautioned by police in the United States for shoplifting and she also faced allegations of Marijuana possession. Since returning to the womens tour full-time in 1999 she has fought her way back to 18th in the rankings, winning two tournaments last year. Capriati, seeded three, started out nervously, committing several double faults and other errors. Both women played a similar baseline game, relying on powerful groundstrokes and two-fisted backhands and rarely going in to the net. The seventh-seeded Maleeva, deceptively powerful despite her small frame, initially mixed up the shots better, wrongfooting Capriati with delicate drop shots and well-placed lobs. (AFP) |
IT appraisal report on raids on cricketers likely by Nov NEW DELHI, Oct 2: Income Tax authorities hope to complete by next month their "appraisal report" on the raids carried out at the official and residential premises of bookies in July last. Highly-placed IT sources said the report was being compiled after recording statements from all those raided during the nation-wide swoop on July 20. The sources said several top cricketers and bookies were questioned by the IT officials and all of them were being confronted with the documents seized from their residences. They said after the completion of the report, individual notices would be sent to persons to file in their block returns to the authorities. The players, administrators and bookies would also be given time to reply to the notices sent by the IT Department. The sources said after these players and other persons submit their reply to the IT Department, the taxmen would prepare the final assessment report and ask them to pay tax at the rate of 60 per cent of their undisclosed income. However, if any of the players or administrators still do not disclose all the income, a penalty of 100 to 300 per cent can be levied besides recommending them for prosecution, the sources said. The sources claimed that several cricket players had not filed the income tax returns for some years while one former test cricketer had not filed a single tax return so far. The IT sources said the cricket players would have to explain all "unusual deposits and withdrawals" from their bank accounts. Besides this, the players would have to explain every expenditure made in foreign countries in purchase of costly items. In the nation-wide swoop on July 20, IT officials raided premises of cricketers including Kapil Dev, Ajay Jadeja, Ajay Sharma, Nikhil Chopra and Manoj Prabhakar (all in Delhi), Mohammed Azharuddin (in Hyderabad and Mumbai) and Navjot Singh Siddhu (in Patiala), former International Cricket Council chief Jagmohan Dalmiya (in Calcutta), Worldtel Chairman Mark Mascarenhas (in Bangalore) and BCCI treasurer Kishore Rungta (in Jaipur), besides some bookies. The IT officials have so far summoned cricketing icon Kapil Dev, star batsman Ajay Jadeja, Ajay Sharma, Nikhil Chopra, Mukesh Gupta and Rattan Mehta for questioning. Other players like Mohammed Azharuddin and his wife Sangeeta Bijlani have also been summoned in their respective state headquarters. (PTI) |

Batohi returned to South Africa on September 23 after a week-long visit to India where she tried acquire tapes of conversations allegedly linking Cronje to a bookmaker. She and investigator Geoff Edwards met with officials of Indias Central Bureau of Investigations who are probing match-fixing charges against some of Indias cricketing stars. NAIROBI, Oct 2: In a land which has not seen rains for the past eighteen months and is facing a bad drought, clouds flirting in the skies is a welcome sight. But it certainly is not so for the organisers of the ICC knock-out tournament. "Its always like this around this time of the year and weather is the last thing in our minds," said Anil Sarkar, secretary of the Kenyan Cricket Association, shrugging off fears of an intervention by rains during the fortnight long event. As the Gymkhana sports ground gears up for the biggest cricket event in Africa, there are other fears as well about the saleability of the game itself. And the ICC mandarins meeting here, must be definitely a worried lot as the knock-out has attracted very few sponsors, perhaps a fallout of unbridled commercialisation of the game. The mood at the Indian camp, a day ahead of the opener against Kenya, is however relatively more cheerful. A fluent six-wicket win over West Indies in a practice game yesterday with nearly 16 overs to spare must have definitely warmed their cockles. So far things have gone fine. The boys are in good nick and coming here nearly a week ahead of the first game has helped, said stand-in coach Aunshuman Gaekwad, who signed off after his first stint here last year. The heartening aspect of yesterday's win were the players behind it. Venkatesh Prasad, so often a victim of selectors whims and fancies, bowled a fine opening spell to reduce West Indies to 18 for four and then restricted them to a meagre 170. Prasad got good support from rookies left-arm seamer Zahir Khan and left-arm spinner Yuvraj Singh. The World Cup Under-19 hero went a step ahead from there as he fired a quickfire 51 not out to take his team through in the company of Vinod Kambli. The Mumbai south-paw struck form too with a characteristically strokeful 43. India tried a new opening combination in the game yesterday with S Sriram opening with Sachin Tendulkar. The two put 52 runs though Srirams brief but impressive tenure yielded only 18 runs. Tendulkar made 27 from 32 deliveries. The Kenyans have had a rough run-up to the opening game tomorrow as they first lost a practice game against Bangladesh and then were thrashed by 93 runs by the Aussies. "We'll be a different team tomorrow. We'll do better than what he did over the past one week," said coach Sandeep Patil after a three-hour session at the nets today. The Kenyans have had a good run in recent months, beating Pakistan A, Karnataka and last month won the Africa Cup that featured a sides from South Africa and Zimbabwe. The wicket has been shorn of the grass but the curator Andy Atkinson reckons the the wicket will play true. "Unlike in the past, the wicket will have enough for the bowlers. The ball will come up to the bat and will be good for strokemakers," the former groundsman of the wanderers said. The match commences at 1215 hrs IST tomorrow. (UNI) |
