IAF men keen to prove impossible may not be too difficult SIACHEN, Oct 1: Their desire is to touch the sky with glory and are guided by the motto we do the difficult as routine; The impossible may take a bit longer. They are the brave officers and men of Indian Air Force who have proved by operating in the inhospitable terrains braving enemy fire that nothing is impossible provided one has the indomitable will and audacity. "What can cause shivers within an ordinary pilot, the pilots of IAF are performing routinely, for 6-8 hours a day, 365 days a year," says Air Officer Commanding, Leh, Air Commodore F H Major, referring to the sorties flown by the Air Force helicopters and planes to the Army posts situated amid mountain peaks in almost inaccessible heights ranging upto 20,500 ft. In fact, the IAF has been performing this routine for the last 16 years since the Operation Meghdoot began in the glaciated 76-km stretch of Siachen as part of air maintenance and defence of the mountainous land of Ladakh. "To counter the cartographic aggression by the Pakistanis the Indian Army launched an expedition to the (Siachen) Glacier under the leadership of Col Narendra Kumar, a mountaineer of repute in 1978. On September 20, 1978, Chetaks flew the first sorties in the glacier in support of the expedition," said Major. In 1984, a battalion strength force of the Army occupied the Glacier and choked off the Pakistani access through Bilafond La and Sia La. "Siachen air operations today are a far cry from the adhoc procedures of the first sorties of 1978. They are scientifically planned and meticulously executed, for both human lives and supplies are precious," said Major. Both IAF aircraft and helicopters are engaged in continous maintenance operations at the posts in the Glacier with height in excess of 20,000 ft and situated within firing range of the enemy. At places, enemy posts are a mere 300 mts away. "Flying a sortie in the Siachen Glacier is a different ball game altogether as even a slight miscalculation or mishandling of controls by the pilot can cause force landing in an area where crevasses are so wide and deep as to swallow an entire aircraft without a trace," said Air Officer Commanding Jammu and Kashmir Air Vice Marshal S K Jain. Siachen Glacier, where the Actual Ground Position Level (AGPL) is drawn forming the boundary with Pakistan, lies deep in the heart of the Karakoram mountains forming the main axis of the range itself. "Ground here is so fragmented and uneven that one would stand a negligible chance of survival. Besides, the pilots have to brave temperatures as low as -60 degrees celsius, strong winds and flying in poor weather conditions in the close proximity of hills," Jain said. "There is always the threat of powerful down draughts that pull the helicopter down, if the pilots are not careful. Added to this is that the helicopters are flying at the extremes of their flight envelope where the power margin available is small, if not negligible," Jain said, adding above these there is a threat of enemy fire. A typical day for each pilot here starts with the first take off at sunrise and ends just before sunset after flying for six to eight hours and ferrying three to five tonnes of supplies to the highest helipads in the world where the fatigue levels are high due to noise and vibrations. "With such a hectic routine, an ordinary person would soon crack up. But our men are made of sterner stuff," Jain said. (PTI) |

Petroleum dealers to go on nation-wide strike from Oct 6 Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 1: The petroleum dealers have resolved to suspend lifting of supplies from the oil companies resulting into the nation-wide strike from October 6. Addressing a press conference here today, president of the Jammu and Kashmir Petroleum Dealers Association Capt Mohan Singh (Retd) said that the decision in this connection was taken in the meeting of managing committee of the Federation of All India Petroleum Traders in Delhi on September 9, 2000. It was resolved in the meeting that petroleum traders all over the country would stop lifting petrol (MS) and diesel (HSD) from the respective nationalised oil companies with effect from Oct 6. This means the consumers would not get petrol/diesel from the petrol pumps from Oct 6. Capt Singh pointed out that at present, the quality parameter being demonstrated by the Government Oil Companies at the time of delivery of MS/HSD at the dealer retail outlets is density matching as per the invoice of the respective oil company. Whereas, the dealers despite demonstrating the stipulated density values, are being heavily penalised for non-conformity of parameters such as Octane value. They are not familiar with such system as these are never demonstrated to them at the time of delivery of goods at their outlets. The retail outlets are presently provided with the basic density checking equipment only by the oil companies. None of them is equipped with any testing equipment such as Octane Tester, mini-lab or the Maker system. The strike has been launched after seeing no action from the oil companies despite repeated requests. Even the assurance on the part of Minister concerned Mr Ram naik brought to succor to the traders. The dealers further demanded that their commission should be raised to minimum 5 % to enable them to make their survival possible as the price of the products have increased manifold. With mere one per cent commission the overhead charges for maintaining a petrol station alongwith the large staff, have almost nullified their earnings. They claimed that the strike would continue till their demands are met. |
