Daredevils raring to raid the Himalayas KUFRI (SHIMLA), Sept 30: The battle between the man, the machine and high altitude amidst the snow clad ranges will hit the roads tomorrow with the final security screening of vehicles done today for the Raid De Himalayas car rally. The Raid which made its debut last year, promises to be an exciting outing for some 70-odd daredevils who have come from as far as even Australia to experience the thrill of driving through the hostile terrain. A timed speed event sanctioned by the world racing body FIA and Federation of Motor Sport Clubs in India (FMSCI), last year was staged at an altitude of 16,000 feet and the organisers are trying to lift the altitude by an additional 2000 feet this year. "We have already applied for a place in the guiness bood of records for the rally to be categorised as the toughest and most challenging in the world," said Vijay Parmar, president of Himalayan Motor Sport Association. The vehicles were divided into two teams - team A and N as the drivers get ready for the flag-off. Team A can carry modifications in the engine such as the cylinder head can be shaved, high performance cam shafts could be used to enhance power of the engine by almost 50 percent. On the other side, N category vehicles are restricted from any kind of modifications. The marshalls today marked the vehicles A and N according to the FIA rules which included painting of group N vehicles in a manner that the moment a modificiation is carried out, a crack appears on the paint. Ranjoy Mukerjee, one of the participant in N category says "it is the spirit of adventure which has brought me here." About the chances of success, he says nonchalantly "50-50 chances of finishing the race, given the tough route and conditions." Col Tankha, associated with the Raid since its inception sums it all about the adventure sports when he says it is the challenge between the man and the machine and the high altitude. (PTI) |
OLYMPICS
SYDNEY, Sept 30: Cameroons footballers lived up to their indomitable name and Cuban boxers were unbeatable, too, but the once apparently invincible Marion Jones proved human again today on the busiest day of the Sydney Olympics. Jones, whose bid for five athletics gold medals in Sydney was thwarted when she finished third in the long jump yesterday, got one more gold in the 4x400m relay. But she had to settle for bronze again in the 4x100m relay after botched baton handovers helped end us hopes. The Bahamas triumphed, and Pauline Davis-Thompson, running her last race, was thrilled to go out with gold. "The Americans never respect us," she said. "Marion Jones was in their team and we beat them. Now they will have to show us some respect." Cuba is a Caribbean nation used to getting a lot of respect in the sporting world, and in todays boxing finals they showed why. All four of Cubas finalists emerged with gold, led by superman Felix Savon, who won his third consecutive Olympic heavyweight title. Savon nearly missed his coronation when a gash opened under his left eye in the fourth and final round. After a brief examination by the referee, the bout continued, and savon danced his way to the points win. Bantamweight Guillermo Rigondeaux, lightweight Mario Kindelan and middleweight Jorge Gutierrez all won for Cuba, and their women volleyballers also had the midas touch, rallying from two sets down to beat world number two Russia and complete their own unique Olympic volleyball hat-trick. "We are Cubans, we came here to do the best and that meant fighting until the end," said Cuba captain Regla Bell McKenzie of the come-from-behind victory. "I dedicate this victory to the whole country of Cuba," added Regla Torres, like Bell McKenzie a veteran of the 1992 and 1996 gold medal-winning teams. "I hope it will be an inspiration to the women of Cuba." Cameroons indomitable lions beat nine-man Spain 5-3 on penalties to retain the Olympic football crown for Africa, four years after Nigerias ground-breaking triumph in Atlanta. Spain, reduced to nine men by the time the regulation 90 minutes finished at 2-2, hung on bravely through 30 minutes of extra time to force the match into the shootout. Russias Viacheslav Ekimov upset American Lance Armstrongs plans for Olympic gold and held off Jan Ullrichs bid for a road cycling double when he came from deep in the field to win the mens time trial. Ekimov powered through the 46.8-kilometre course in 57 minutes and 40 ahead of silver medallist Ullrich, the winner of Wednesdays road race, and 34 seconds in front of armstrong the man he helped to a second tour de france title this year as part of the US postal team. While armstrong goes home empty-handed but for his time trial bronze, Dutch cyclist Leontien Van Moorsel won her third gold of games when she dominated the womens time trial and grabbed the title of the most successful female cyclist ever to take part in an Olympics. Van Moorsel also took gold in the womens road race and the individual pursuit as well as silver in the womens points race. Germanys Birgit Fischer captured her sixth gold medal, her ninth Olympic medal overall, when she teamed with Anett Schuck, Manuela Mucke and Katrin Wagner for the womens Kayak four victory, tying the German record for most Olympic gold medals. Tomorrow she can surpass the mark she shares with swimmer Kristin Otto and dressage rider Reiner Klimke when she races in the Kayak pairs. Elsewhere on the water, Iain Percy claimed a third sailing gold for Britain with his victory in the mens finn class with a race to spare. The United States team of Mark Reynolds and Magnus Liljedahl won the gold medal in the Olympic open star class, and Denmark won the open soling gold. Russia captured two freestyle wrestling titles, Saghid Mourtasaliyev winning the 97kg class with a victory over Kazakhstans Islam Bairamukov. His compatriot Mourad Oumakhanov won the 63kg crown, while Germanys Alexander Leipold won the 76kg gold and Namig Abdullayev of Azerbaijan won the 54kg class. After the football final in Stadium Australia, the athletes moved back in. Algerias Nouria Merah-Benida pulled off a stunning upset when she won the womens 1,500m ahead of Violeta Szekely of Romania and her teammate Gabriela Szabo, winner of the 5,000m earlier in the week. Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia won a gripping womens 10,000 metre final in a new Olympic record, adding the gold to the one she won in Barcelona in 1992. She finished more than five seconds ahead of her teammate Gete Wami with Atlanta gold medallist Fernanda Ribeiro of Portugal taking the bronze. Russias Yelena Yelesina ended a 10-year wait to claim the Olympic high jump gold. The 30-year-old mother last won a major title when she took the European Junior Championship in 1989. Ethiopias Million Wolde came of age when he won the mens 5,000m. The 21-year-old who won the world junior title two years ago and finished eighth at the world championships in Seville a year ago, ran his race to perfection, beating out second placed Ali Saidi-Sief of Algeria and Moroccos Brahim Lahlafi. There were no mistakes for the United States mens 4x100m relay, anchored by 100m champion Maurice Greene. They took the gold ahead of Brazil while Cuba finished with the bronze. (AFP) |
