POONCH, Nov 28: Troops of Poonch Brigade today eliminated five dreaded militants of Tehreek-ul-Jehad including its ‘commander-in-chief’ Ashraf Ahmed Beerwal in a fiercest gun-battle at village Dhanna near Sundri Dhok in Sabjian area of this district. Two civilians were also killed while 10 others including eight civilians and two army jawans were injured in the encounter.........more

 

Ceasefire decision a calculated risk: Advani

L K AdvaniNEW DELHI, Nov 28: The Government has taken a "calculated risk" in declaring a unilateral ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir but at the same time terrorists will not be allowed to take advantage of the Centre’s desire to restore peace in the State, Home Minister L K Advani said today.

Security forces have been asked not to carry out searches or engage in combat action but they have been kept in a state of readiness to retaliate in full measure if attacked, Advani told BJP Parliamentary Party here.........more

POONCH, Nov 28: Garrison Commander of Poonch Brigade Brig W J B Sturgeon and a Commandant had a narrow escape while a Staff Officer was injured in sudden heavy shelling by Pakistan army at forward post of Sarla in Khari Karmara area of Poonch sector late this evening. Brig Sturgeon flanked by his Commandant had gone to Sarla post to review the situation prevailing on the Line of Control (LoC) especially in the wake of cease-fire announced by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.However, Pakistan army, which was well aware of Brig Sturgeon and his officers visit to the post, suddenly ..........more

Laloo remanded to jail

Laloo Prasad YadavPATNA, Nov 28: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Laloo Prasad Yadav was sent to Beur jail today by the special CBI Judge S K Pathak with the expiry of the bail for three months granted to him by the Patna High Court in connection with a Disproportionate Assets (DA) case, an offshoot of the multi-crore fodder scam. The designated CBI Judge remanded Laloo to judicial custody as there was no High Court order on Yadav’s prayer for extension of the provisional bail period, which expired yesterday. Yadav, who participated in the court’s proceedings since the morning during examination of witnesses in the ongoing trial in the D A case was asked by the special Judge to stay on till.......more
