Bangladesh batsmen milk ordinary Indian bowling DHAKA, Nov 10: Middle-order batsmen Habibal Bashar and seasoned Aminul Islam milked an ordinary Indian bowling on way to scoring half-centuries as Bangladesh put up a credible 239 for six on the first day of their maiden test match here today. Zimbabweans tour opener ends in a draw INDORE, Nov 10: Former Zimbabwean skipper Andy Flower cracked 119 runs off 180 balls before retiring as the visitors tour opener ended in a draw with the future of Indian cricket, the National Cricket Academy XI giving them a taste of the toil they are in for. Resuming at the overnight score of 84 for two, Zimbabwe, used the final day of the three-day match to give their batsmen a feel of the Indian conditions and the spinners and went on to make 320 for 5 before declaring the second innings 68 minutes after tea. Set a ridiculous target of 320 runs 11 overs for a win, NCA made 42 for one in their second knock by final draw of stumps. Left-hander Andy Flower, out for a duck in the first innings, played some handsome strokes allround the wicket hitting 13 fours and was associated in two big stands with Trevor Madono (65 off 138 balls) and Stuart Carlisle (39). He first put on 122 runs for the third wicket with Madono in 165 minutes off 122 balls and then added another 79 runs for the fourth wicket with Carisle in 84 minutes off 132 balls before he retired at the stroke of tea with the teams total reading 235 for three. Among the NCA bowlers, medium pacer Rakesh Patel of Baroda finished with two for 43 while left arm spinner V Sivaramakrishnan of Chennai bagged two for 71. First to go today was Madondo deceived and bowled by Sivaramakrishnan after hitting seven fours during a tenure of slightly more than three hours. Andy Flower, dropped by Sriram in slips off off-spinner Sharandeep Singh when on 55, was going great guns at the other end. He, however, lost Carisle when the total was 266. Carisle was caught by substitute Vinayak Mane at mid-on off Sivaramakrishnan for 39 which contained four fours and one six. Soon after, Flower retired and that brought two new batsmen to the crease - Guy Whittall and Trevor Friend. The latter did not last long was bowled by Mruthunjay Tripathi for ten. Chess Olympiad ISTANBUL, Nov 10: Indian men advanced in the standings list with a fine 2.5-1.5 victory over Kyrgyzstan while the women remained on course for a respectable finish, drawing with Belarus 1.5-1.5, in the 12th round of the 34th Chess Olympiad here today. Top seed Russia put up another good show to overwhelm armenia with a huge margin of 3.5-0.5 in the mens section. The Russians have 34 points in their kitty now and enjoy a 2-point lead over nearest rival Germany who downed USA 3-1. India is tied for the 10-13 spot with 28.5 points to its credit. The next round of the remaining two rounds will be crucial for India as they take on a not-so-strong poland. In the womens event, the Chinese (28 points) are cruising to a smooth victory. They defeated Germany 2-1 and have a 2.5 points lead over georgia. Indian women have accumulated 20 points. It was grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran who anchored the Indian victory today. Playing white against E Moldobaev, the Indian stalwart firmly put behind the loss yesterday and crushed the modern Benoni defence. After routine opening moves, Sasikiran emerged with a slight advantage and slowly squeezed the counter attack on the queenside with timely blockades by minor pieces. When Sasikiran initiated a king-side attack, Moldobaev sensed imminent trouble. Fearing disaster, Moldobaev decided to sacrifice his queen bishop pawn but did not get the desired counter play. Sasikiran pushed the central pawns to create decisive threats and won on the 51st move. The other three boards for India ended in draws. On the second board, GM Abhijit Kunte took on V Magai from the black side of a queens Indian defence and did not have any difficulty in equalizing after the opening. The pieces got exchanged at regular intervals and the peace treaty was signed after 39 moves. IM P Harikrishna continued his unconquered run here holding GM Leonid Yurtaev to a draw with white pieces. Harikrishna started with what appeared a kings Indian def-ence but he dexterously transposed it to a relatively new set up. A symmetrical pawn structure was arrived after Harikrishna simplified position in the centre and the game thereon looked set for a draw. The game lasted for merely 23 moves. On the fourth board, GM Dibyendu Barua drew with E Inarkiev with his queens gambit declined. In the conventional minority attack, Inarkiev exchanged a couple of minor pieces and could not claim much advantage with white pieces. Barua sacrificed a pawn to force a draw by repetition after 33 moves. WGM S Vijayalakshmi on an excellent run here, is on course for an individual medal now, having garnered 10.5 points from her 12 outings. With black pieces Vijayalakshmi had to sweat hard in a lesser-known set up employed by R Eidelson. The opening did not offer much and after a rigourous fight in the middle game it took a whopping 89 moves for Vijayalakshmi to convert her miniscule advantage. (PTI) |
