Politician’s son among 5 top LeT men held in City

Arms and ammunition seized by Border Police. -Excelsior/AshokJAMMU, Nov 9: The Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu Police have arrested five local contacts of Lashkar-e-Toiba including son of a prominent Muslim Federation leader and a politician and completely worked out the militants’ attack on Amarnath yatra pilgrims at Hari Singh higher secondary school on August 1 morning this year.

Of five arrested, three were residents of Talab Khatikan locality in the City while two others hailed from Doda district but presently putting up at Bhatindi and Gujjar Nagar localities.

Arrested Lashkar activists, who were produced before newsmen at a press conference this evening, have been identified as Imran Qazi son of a Muslim Federation leader Talat Niaz Qazi, Faisal Muneer son of Mohd Sadiq and Asad Ullah Malik alias Nitu son of Mohd Shaffi Malik, all residents of Talab Khatikan, Tariq Ahmed son of Ghulam Mohd, a resident of Ward No. 9, Kishtwar, presently putting up in Bhatindi and Bashir Ahmed son of Shamas Din of Nalti, Bhaderwah, now living at Gujjar Nagar.

Addressing the press conference, IGP Jammu range R V Raju and DIG Jammu-Kathua zone Dr S P Vaid said the SOG team was constantly following several leads following attack on Amarnath yatris at Hari Singh higher secondary school by a ‘Fidayeen’ (a suicide squad of LeT). However, an alert Sub Inspector and a cop had gunned down the Fidayeen and thwarted his attempt to kill the pilgrims.

The exact identity of ‘Fidayeen’ has now been established as Abid alias Burzug, a Pakistani. An identity card of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was recovered from his possession when he was killed by police on the spot.

Raju said police from the very outset was of the view that a single militant wouldn’t have been able to carry out strike in the heart of the City and that some local contacts had definitely helped him in executing the task. "At that time we told newsmen that the militant was alone to ensure that his contacts are kept in dark", Raju told a questioner.

Initially, he said, SOG sleuths led by SP (Operations) Jammu Sheikh Mehmood under the supervision of DIG Jammu arrested Tariq Ahmed from Bhatindi and subjected him to sustained interrogation. He made some sensational disclosures during the questioning, which unfolded the incidents leading to attack on Amarnath yatris.

According to the story, the LeT militants operating in Kashmir valley and Doda district initially motivated Tariq Ahmed, a surrendered ultra and re-cycled him into militancy. Tariq then motivated another militant Bashir Ahmed in the house of his in-laws at Gujjar Nagar and asked him to carry out an attack on Amarnath pilgrims.

The duo created their three local contacts, now in SOG custody, and roped them in militancy. Through a courier, the militants received a consignment of grenades from Srinagar and then all five militants carried out a dry rehearsal of throwing grenades on the pilgrims in front of MA stadium, the main transit camp of yatris, from Fly Over.

However, a police handout issued in the press conference said, the militants received instruction from Srinagar to with-hold the action as a ‘Fidayeen’ Abid alias Burzug was being deputed to Jammu to carry out the strike.

Abid was subsequently received by these militants and given shelter by Bashir Ahmed and Faisal Muneer where all of them hatched a conspiracy to attack the pilgrims at stadium. By then, the group was in possession of one rifle, 10 grenades and 10 magazines, which were kept in the house of Faisal Muneer.

However, the militants revealed during interrogation, that during rehearsal they found it difficult to carry the rifle into MA stadium in view of tight security arrangements made by police and para-military personnel. Later, they decided to carry out the attack at Hari Singh high school.

The place was surveyed by the group twice and an elaborate plan was made for ensuring safe escape of Abid after the attack. As per the plan, Imran was asked to arrange a scooter, which he borrowed from one of his friend Harish Gupta of Kanak Mandi. Then Faisal and Imran purchased a cricket bag in which the gun was fixed.

Faisal and Imran took Abid on the fateful day from Talab Khatikan to Jogi Gate. Their plan was to receive Abid near Prem Tent House after the attack. Abid had planned to throw grenades, fire at the pilgrims and throw the rifle before reaching to waiting Faisal through Christian Colony. Then he was to be taken to Panjtirthi where Tariq had to take him further to Bhatindi and hide him.

However, after throwing grenades and firing on the pilgrims, Abid was gunned down by an alert SI and a cop. Realising that Abid was killed, Faisal and Imran has escaped from the spot.

Replying to a question about the significance of son of a prominent Muslim leader, Raju virtually evaded the reply saying ‘everyone has a father. He said the police has received fullest support of Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah and other authorities in curbing the militancy in Jammu.

Police avert clash at Jammu Airport
Malik arrested amidst massive protest from Shiv Sainiks

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Nov 9: Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) president Yaseen Malik was arrested by police at Airport this afternoon soon after he landed here to address a scheduled JKLF rally at Shaheedhi Chowk. Police faced a tough time at the Airport as a number of Shiv Sainiks, who had managed to get an entry inside, chased Malik shouting slogans and throwing shoes on him.

Malik was taken into custody at 1410 hours soon after he emerged out of an Indian Airlines flight from New Delhi. SP Airport and SP South told Malik that he was under arrest and whisked him away to Airport lounge.

After about 20 minutes stay in the Airport during which Malik also spoke to newsmen, the police party brought him outside for taking him to an undisclosed place. However, as soon as he was brought out of the Airport lounge, the waiting Shiv Sena workers rushed towards Malik and tried to attack him.

Police personnel laid a cordon around Malik and packed him off in a Gypsy. In the melee, some Sainiks threw their shoes on Malik and made repeated attempts to drag him out of the police Gypsy but police didn’t allow them to succeed.

As vehicle sped away, the Shiv Sena workers chased Malik in their two-wheelers and other vehicles but cops managed to drive him away to an undisclosed place. A mild force was also used by police to disperse the Sainiks.

Earlier in the morning, no JKLF activist turned out at Shaheedhi Chowk to participate in outfit’s ‘peace march’, scheduled for this morning. Police had surrounded the entire Chowk to thwart any attempt by JKLF cadres to converge at the Chowk. Over 40 activists of JKLF including Javed Mir were arrested by police in a mid-night swoop on the intervening night of November 7 and 8 from a City hotel.

Meanwhile, talking to a group of newsmen at Jammu Airport in police custody, Malik charged both Centre and State Government with communalising the situation in the State. "By holding a rally in Jammu I wanted to bridge the gap between people of Jammu and Kashmir. By not allowing JKLF to hold the rally, the Government has exposed its communal nature", he alleged.

The JKLF president said his outfit was strongly against trifurcation of the state and ‘today’s rally was also aimed at mobilising the opinion against J&K’s division ‘. He alleged that National Conference was also supporting trifurcation while the JKLF was trying for maintaining unity and brotherhood among the people of both regions.

"People of Jammu are our brothers. We wanted to talk to them to work out a lasting solution to Kashmir problem. We won’t allow the State to be divided on communal lines", Malik said.

He said JKLF cadres had spoken to senior officers of both civil and police administration about a fortnight back and sought permission for the rally. "Verbally we were granted permission for the rally but when our cadres started converging in the City for making arrangements, 40 of them including Javed Mir were arrested", he regretted.

Asserting that he was never against talks on Kashmir issue, Malik said he still was of the view that a comprehensive dialogue involving the people of Jammu and Kashmir can solve the problem. He denied that there were any differences in Hurriyat on the dialogue. Rather, he alleged, it was the Government which was trying to divide Hurriyat ‘but they will never succeed’.

Replying to a question on the killing of prominent Shia leader Aga Syed Mehdi, Malik said he as well as Hurriyat Conference have already condemned the killing. Asked whether he condemned the killing of NC and BJP leaders as well, Malik quipped :"we don’t know who had killed them".

Shiv Sainiks, who demonstrated against Malik, were led by Rakesh Gupta and included Kuldeep Luthra, Ranjit Singh Bali, Anil Gupta, Shashi Abrol, Rajinder Gupta, Hit Bandhu, Dimple Kohli and Vipan Hindu among others.

Discloses links with NC leader
Gurdwara’s Head Granthi arrested with arms

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Nov 9: In a major breakthrough, Special Operations Group (SOG) of police today arrested a Head Granthi of Bakshi Nagar Gurdwara and recovered arms and explosives, hidden by him, inside the religious place. Identified as Manmohan Singh alias Sonu son of Gurdeep Singh, a resident of Simbal Camp, the Granthi was a front ranking activist of Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF).

SOG sources said the Head Granthi had disclosed his links with a prominent National Conference leader, who was already in the midst of a controversy but declined to name him. "At this stage we can’t confirm the allegation as investigations were on", a senior SOG officer said, pleading anonymity.

The Head Granthi-cum-top militant was produced before the newsmen at a press conference addressed by IGP Jammu R V Raju and DIG Jammu-Kathua range Dr S P Vaid. Replying to a question, Raju, however, declined to comment on Head Granthi’s links with the National Conference leader saying "every aspect was under investigation as only few hours have passed when the Granthi was picked up". " We will disclose everything which comes up during interrogation".

Giving details of the arrest, police sources said, a tip off was received during interrogation of some suspects that young Sonu was carrying out his activities under the garb of religious post. Accordingly, SOG team raided the religious place last night and took Sonu into custody.

Sonu was subjected to questioning during which he disclosed that he had hidden arms and ammunition in dome of the Gurdwara. Sources said one Chinese pistol and two powerful Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) were recovered from the religious place.

Sustained interrogation of Sonu was on and some more clues were expected of him. According to sources, Sonu had earlier also been arrested for his links with the militants and detained twice under Public Safety Act (PSA). Both the time, he had been bailed out. Later, he was appointed Head Granthi of Bakshi Nagar Gurudwara by a religious leader.

Sonu confessed that he had to use IEDs at crowded places to trigger explosions. He disclosed that he had been given pistol and IEDs by a notorious trans-border smuggler and KZF hitman Khurum Massi alias Manjeet Singh alias Iqbal, a Pakistani national, who had infiltrated into Indian territory in July this year through RS Pura sector.

Another contact of Sonu identified as Harminder Singh alias Pindi had already been arrested by the police. From his possession, one pistol, one IED and Rs 25,000 worth fake currency was recovered. He too had planned to trigger an IED blast in a crowded area.

Pindi had given the fake currency to some advocates for securing the release of few jailed militants. Similarly, Rs 25,000 fake currency was also given by Khurum Massi to Head Granthi for the same purpose, which he too had given to advocates.

Describing the arrest of Head Granthi of a Gurdwara as something very significant, police said this will go a long way in unearthing the network of KZF activists in Jammu.

J&K Police verification report is awaited
Lone’s fresh passport documents may not be cleared

From B L Kak

NEW DELHI, Nov 9: The controversial Kashmiri politician, Mr Abdul Ghani Lone, has drawn a blank, with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) virtually rejecting his appeal for intervention in the matter arising from his request to the Government of India to permit him to visit Pakistan for his son’s impending marriage.

Mr Lone’s younger son, Mr Sajjad Lone, is getting married to Ms Asma Khan, daughter of Rawalpindi-based chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), Mr Amanullah Khan, on November 19.

Mr Amanullah Khan has invited a number of leaders and politicians from Jammu and Kashmir. The invitees include, among others, all top leaders of the All-Party Hurriyat Conference and the J&K Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah.

In the initial stages, Dr Farooq had intended attending the event in Pakistan. However, following the receipt of reports from Government sleuths about the "emerging threat" to him and to some of his party colleagues from unidentified terrorists, Dr Farooq dropped the idea.

On the other hand, top leaders of the Hurriyat Conference decided to camp in New Delhi till cleared by the Government of India and given legitimate travel documents to visit Pakistan for the social-cum-political event-that is, the reunion of the families of the two separatist leaders.

Even as indications about the Government’s willingness to clear them immediately were not certain at all, the Hurriyat leaders, namely, Prof Abdul Ghani Bhat, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Mr Abdul Ghani Lone, Sheikh Abdul Aziz and Mr Yasin Malik met officials in the Pakistan chancery, including Pak High Commissioner, on Wednesday and requested them to make available visa documents "without any delay" should New Delhi allow them to visit Pakistan for attending the Rawalpindi event on November 19.

Interestingly, by the time Mr Abdul Ghani Lone had started the "dialogue process" inside the Pakistan High Commission, the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Justice JS Verma, let it be known that the NHRC had decided against interfering till a final decision by the Government of India on Mr Lone’s request.

Mr Abdul Ghani Lone, after obtaining information with regard to the Government’s "dilatory tactics" on his demand for grant of permission to him to attend his son’s marriage in Pakistan, had approached the NHRC for its intervention in the matter. Mr Lone, obviously, had anticipated a response of his choice from the NHRC in view of his past experience.

The NHRC had, in 1999, directly intervened when Mr Lone wanted to visit the United States for his medical treatment. In fact, he was permitted by the Government to visit the US on the directions from the NHRC.

The response from the NHRC this time was totally different. Much against the expectations of Mr Lone, the NHRC termed his complaint as "hypothetical". Considering the fact that the Centre had not formally rejected Mr Lone’s plea by the time the NHRC took up his complaint, Justice Verma observed that he (Mr Lone) had assumed that the people who were supposed to do their job would not do it.

And at a time when the Centre waited for the verification report from the Jammu and Kashmir Police authorities vis-à-vis Mr Lone’s application for a fresh passport, Justice Verma said that while Mr Lone’s application had still not been rejected by the Government, the process of issuing a passport "takes time and it is wrong to assume" that the Government was delaying it because they don’t want to issue it to him.

Mr Lone has, for obvious reasons, avoided making any adverse remarks against the NHRC’s verdict. But he has not hesitated to express himself against the Government of India, which, he lamented, was not permitting him to visit Rawalpindi.

ISI guide Niaz Chacha shot dead in Niki Tawi

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Nov 9: A Pakistani militant and a notorious ISI guide was gunned down by police in an ambush laid in Bhagwati Nagar area along Niki Tawi in the early hours of this morning.

According to police sources, a police party of Special Operations Group (SOG) had been maintaining a constant vigil on Niki Tawi area by laying ambush in view of reports that the area was being used by Pakistan army to push militants into Indian territory.

In the early hours today, an SOG team noticed movement along Niki Tawi and became alert. As cops saw a militant moving towards Bhagwati Nagar area, they asked him to surrender. However, the ultra opened firing on cops with a pistol and tried to flee back to Pakistan.

Cops retaliated and gunned down the militant on the spot. An identity card was found in his possession which established his identity as Nazir Ahmed alias Niaz Chacha alias Niazu of Gujranwalla, Pakistan. Besides a pistol, one Improvised Explosive Device (IED), fitted with a time device and two grenades were recovered from the scene of encounter.

Niaz Chacha was a notorious ISI guide involved in infiltration of a large number of militants. He was also involved in three blasts at Kot Bhalwal in which an electric tower was blown up. Niaz Chacha's associate Mohd Aslam has been arrested by police.

There was no casualty on police side in the encounter.

Sources said the militant was pushed into Indian territory by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) for triggering explosions at prominent places. A map of some vital installations was also recovered from his pocket which indicates his likely targets.

According to sources, the International Border along Niki Tawi was extensively being used by the ISI to push Pakistan-trained militants into this side for subversive activities. Patrolling on the track had further been intensified by police and security forces to thwart ISI designs.

Salahuddin for 3-way peace talks

ISLAMABAD, Nov 9: Hizbul Mujahideen leader Syed Salahuddin today claimed three-way talks between Pakistan, India and militant groups in Kashmir were the ‘only’ option for the settlement of the Kashmir issue.

"Our armed struggle will continue until India agrees to tripartite talks to resolve this issue," Syed Salahuddin, head of the pro-Pakistan Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) group, told reporters in Islamabad.

‘We had put the entire credibility of our organization at stake by offering unilateral ceasefire. But unfortunately, India showed its traditional intransigence," Salahuddin claimed.

Meanwhile, Salahuddin called on leaders of Muslim nations, scheduled to meet next week in Qatari capital Doha, to break diplomatic ties and impose economic sanctions against India.

"They should adopt some concrete measures instead of adopting just resolutions in support of Muslim causes," he said in a letter addressed to chairman of 54-member Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC). (DPA)

NEW DELHI, Nov 9: With less than a week to go for the formation of Jharkhand, confusion prevailed in the BJP today over who would be the Chief Minister of the State with two senior leaders Jana Krishnamurthy and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi issuing conflicting statements on the issue.
