Board to decide players’ fate by month-end

NEW DELHI, Nov 8: The future of the five Indian cricketers, placed under an interim ban after being named by CBI in its report on betting and match-fixing, would be decided by the cricket board by this month-end, its president A C Muthiah said today.

The working committee or a special general assembly will consider the internal findings based on the CBI report to be conducted by former CBI Joint Director K Madhavan.

Madhavan will submit his report by November 15 after questioning the concerned players - Mohammed Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja, Ajay Sharma, Manoj Prabhakar and Nayan Mongia - as also former physiotherapist Ali Irani.

While, the board chief did not want to disclose the date and venue of the meeting, one of the summoned cricketers who did not want to be named said it would be at Chennai on November 12.

The disciplinary committee would then discuss the report and its recommendation will go to the board which will summon at the month-end a meeting of its working committee or a special general assembly to take a decision on the matter.

Incidentally, there is a change in the compostion of the three-member disciplinary committee headed by Muthiah himself.

With one of the members Kamal Morarka abroad, another vice-president C K Khanna has been co-opted to join Muthiah and Ram Prasad, the board president said.

Muthiah, who had adversely reacted to certain comments on the functioning of the board by CBI, said the point by point reply would also be considered at the meeting before it is sent to the Sports Ministry.

Asked about the players’ objections to the CBI report like the board had, Muthiah said they were at liberty to take necerssary steps for redressal. The board doesn’t come into the picture, he added.

Asked if a change of the Sports Minister at the Centre would affect the ongoing investigation, particularly in view of the rapport he had established with former Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Muthiah said the taking over of that office by Uma Bharti would not affect it as individuals may change but institutions go on. German plans olympic bid for 2012

DUESSELDORF, Nov 8: The Western German Rhine-Ruhr area plans to submit a bid for the 2012 summer olympics, local sports officials and politicians announced after a meeting last night.

"We want a joint success," said Wolfgang Clement, Prime Minister of the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia in which the Rhine-Ruhr area is located.

" We believe that we already have a good sports infrastructure," said clement of the area which includes the cities of cologne, Duesseldorf, Essen and Dortmund.

The meeting did not determine which of the cities will act as the official bidder. Olympic games are given to cities, not to regions or countries.

The Southern German city of Stuttgart is also considering to bid for the 2012 games.

Germany has so far hosted summer olympics in Berlin 1936 and Munich 1972. Berlin were the last bidders, but failed to win the 2000 games which were recently staged in Sydney. (DPA)

Haryana draw with Delhi in NZ Ranji Trophy tie

GURGAON, Nov 8: Haryana tailenders caved in under pressure and conceded the vital 10 runs first innings lead to Delhi as their North Zone Ranji Trophy match ended in a draw here today.

Delhi had made 349 in their first innings and in reply Haryana were all out for 339, ninty minutes after the play started this morning. Delhi made 147 for 2 before the match was called off after eighth mandatory overs.

Delhi, who earned five points by virtue of 10 runs lead, now have 13 points from two outings while Haryana have three points from two matches.

Resuming at their overnight score of 300 for 7, Haryana needed 40 runs to take the crucial lead. Much depended on young Ishan Ganda who was on 54. Ishan however could not withstand the pressure and looked tentative. He along with Feroz Ghyas, however managed to take the score to 338 and the host looked almost near the post but at this stage Ghanda was bowled by Sanghvi. He added eight runs to his overnight score of 54. Feroz Ghyas was more aggressive and scored 27 runs to take his individual score to 28. But he was out immediately after Ishan, as Sanghvi struck again as he had him caught by Pradeep Chawla. Debutant Deepak Kaushik scored only one run before he edged Virender Sehwag to wicket keeper Dahiya as the hosts lost three wickets in a space of two runs.

After this there was no interest left in the match. Delhi scored 147 losing 2 wickets as the tie was called off after 8 mandatory overs. Openers Akash Chopra remained unbeaten on 65(8x4) and along with Ashu Dani 54 (7x4) added 113 runs for the first wicket. Mithun Manhas (16) was the other unbeaten batsman. (PTI)

Advanta Tennis
Coetzer wins first round

VILLANOVA, (PENNSYLVANIA), Nov 7: Seventh seed Amanda Coetzer of South Africa, the only seeded player in action on the opening day of the Advanta Championships Women’s Tennis Tournament, beat American Erika Delone 6-2 6-3 yesterday.

Coetzer, who has already clinched a berth in next week’s Chase Championships at New York’s Madison Square Garden, next faces Jennifer Hopkins, who beat fellow American Lilia Osterloh 6-1 4-6 6-1.

"I think I had a great year, except for the Grand Slams, unfortunately," said Coetzer, currently 12th in rankings for the chase field.

"Other than that it’s probably been one of my favourite years on the tour."

Julie Halard-Decugis of France was a 6-1 6-1 winner over qualifier Greta Arn of Germany. Canada’s Renata Kolbovic beat another qualifier, Marie-Gaiane Mikaelian of Switzerland, 6-4 7-5. Elena Bovina of Russia defeated American Katie Schlukebir 6-2 6-2.

Local favourite Lisa Raymond of nearby Wayne, Pennsylvania, struggled before beating German qualifier Vanessa Henke 6-4 6-4.

Today, sixth seed Anna Kournikova of Russia plays qualifier Mashona Washington, sister of former men’s player Malivai Washington, and ninth seed Chanda Rubin plays fellow American Amy Frazier.

Rubin, who beat American Jennifer Capriati in straight sets in the finals in Quebec on Sunday, received a seed when fifth seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain was forced to withdraw from the field due to fatigue.

The top four seeds — Martina Hingis of Switzerland, American Lindsay Davenport, spaniard Conchita Martinez and Nathalie Tauziat of France — received first-round byes.

No matter what happens this week and next, it appears mathematically impossible for Davenport, defending champion in both events, to accumulate enough points to pass Hingis in the rankings.

Simply to qualify for the chase, Halard-Decugis must advance to the semifinals here, while Frazier would need to win and knock off one of the top-ranked players in the final.

With the WTA moving its end-of-year championships to Munich, Germany, beginning in 2001, the Advanta, which has served as a preliminary event, will be replaced by a tournament in Nice, France.

At this point no date has been made available to replace the Advanta in the Philadelphia area. In 1998, the U.S. indoor men’s event concluded a run in Philadelphia going back to the early 1960s. It was never replaced. (REUTERS)
