India aims to leave match-fixing demon behind

DHAKA, Nov 7: The Indian cricket team arrived here to a warm welcome for the one-off test match against debutants Bangladesh, and captain Saurav Ganguly expressed his team’s desire to leave behind the demon of match-fixing scandal.

We will not be affected by the match-fixing scandal as none of the players named by CBI in its report on betting and match-fixing, are in the 14-member team, said Ganguly rejecting apprehensions that the revelations will have an adverse effect on the team’s performance.

Ganguly led the Indian team in here without young sensation Yuvraj Singh, who is still awaiting his passport formalities to be completed.

We want to leave the match-fixing issue aside and concentrate of cricket, Ganguly said at a joint press conference with coach Anshuman Gaekwad.

Can you keep the match-fixing aside. I have been answering this for the last seven months, the Indian captain retorted to a question.

He said the recent development in Indian cricket has not kept the crowd and the sponsors away.

Shrugging off India’s humiliating score of 54 runs against Sri Lanka in the Sharjah final, Ganguly said it was a bad dream and assured that the players have come out of it.

He said such a low score could happen any time with any team. It is for the first time that India was bundled out for such a low score after notching up tall scores against strong sides like Australia and South Africa in the ICC knock-out tournament in Nairobi.

Ganguly described the youthful India side as talented and hoped it would emerge as one of the best teams in the world.

In a couple of months we are going to be a very strong side, he said.

On India’s first test against Bangladesh, Ganguly said the team would take it as any other match. We are here to win.

Asked whether Bangladesh will be a whipping boy, Ganguly said it will be decided in the next five days.

Test cricket is a different ball game.

Ganguly said he was confident about India’s pace attack and hoped it would trouble Bangladesh no end. Also in the spin department, We will miss Anil Kumble, we have two good spinners in Sunil Joshi and Murli Karthik. (PTI)

Rafter wins in Lyon, looks forward to Davis Cup

PARIS, Nov 7: Eighth seed Pat Rafter dismissed Argentine Gaston Gaudio in three sets in the first round of the 800,000 dollar Lyon Tennis Tournament yesterday and said he was looking forward to Australia’s Davis Cup final against Spain.

The former U.S. Open champion beat Gaudio 6-4 4-6 6-4 and said he had vastly improved his game since his loss to Romanian Andrei Pavel in Stuttgart last week.

"My main satisfaction today was my volley, which was 100 percent better than what it was last week. My serve and volley game is improving even if I still need to work on a couple of details," he said.

Rafter missed Australia’s Davis Cup final against France last year through injury and he said he was eager to play this time, despite his average current form.

The final is in Barcelona from December 8 to 10.

Rafter lost for the first time to compatriot Mark Philippoussis last month in Hong Kong while fellow-Australian Lleyton Hewitt reached the Stuttgart final and looks an obvious choice for the singles.

Australia Davis Cup captain John Newcombe, who should announce his team this week, faces a tricky choice as Philippoussis had shunned the semifinal against Brazil, much to the disappointment of his compatriots.

Rafter and Philippoussis have since settled their dispute.

"I’m preparing for the final by playing matches. I will have time to practice on clay after Paris. But before that I want to win matches to gain confidence," Rafter said.

"To play in the Davis Cup is not a sacrifice as far as my personal career is concerned, quite the opposite. It’s a great honour," he said.

"It’s all the more important to me as I’m not sure how many more chances I will have to play a final," he added. (REUTERS)

Dementieva, Capriati among qualifiers

NEW YORK, Nov 7: Rising Russian star Elena Dementieva and former child star Jennifer Capriati were among the latest four players to qualify for the elite 16-player field for next week’s season-ending Chase Championships.

American Chanda Rubin, who beat Capriati to win the Bell challenge title in Quebec City on Sunday, and Chase Championships regular Amanda Coetzer of South Africa also nailed down berths for the season finale at New York’s madison square garden, the WTA tour announced yesterday.

The 19-year-old Dementieva, who burst into the women’s tennis spotlight this year by reaching the U.S. Open semifinals and followed that up by taking the silver medal at the Sydney olympics, will be making her Chase Championships debut.

The 24-year-old Capriati returns to the year-end women’s championships after a seven-year absence. She played in the then Virginia Slims Championships for three successive years (1990-92) as a teen sensation.

Rubin, 24, who locked up her spot among the year’s top 16 performers with her victory in Quebec city, makes only her second appearance in the season finale and first since 1995.

The steady Coetzer, 29, clinched a berth in the championships for the eighth consecutive year.

The quartet brings the list of qualifiers to 14 with the last two places in the draw to be determined this week.

Amelie Mauresmo of France and German Anke Huber currently hold down the 15th and 16th places in the standings. But neither is playing this week in Philadelphia, so both are vulnerable.

Julie Halard-Decugis of France and American Amy Frazier are the only players competing this week with a chance of overtaking Mauresmo and Huber.

Those who have previously qualified are Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, Venus and Serena Williams, Monica Seles, Conchita Martinez, Mary Pierce, Anna Kournikova, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario and Nathalie Tauziat. (REUTERS)

Advanta Tennis
Coetzer wins first round

VILLANOVA, (PENNSYLVANIA), Nov 7: Seventh seed Amanda Coetzer of South Africa, the only seeded player in action on the opening day of the Advanta Championships Women’s Tennis Tournament, beat American Erika Delone 6-2 6-3 yesterday.

Coetzer, who has already clinched a berth in next week’s Chase Championships at New York’s Madison Square Garden, next faces Jennifer Hopkins, who beat fellow American Lilia Osterloh 6-1 4-6 6-1.

"I think I had a great year, except for the Grand Slams, unfortunately," said Coetzer, currently 12th in rankings for the chase field.

"Other than that it’s probably been one of my favourite years on the tour."

Julie Halard-Decugis of France was a 6-1 6-1 winner over qualifier Greta Arn of Germany. Canada’s Renata Kolbovic beat another qualifier, Marie-Gaiane Mikaelian of Switzerland, 6-4 7-5. Elena Bovina of Russia defeated American Katie Schlukebir 6-2 6-2.

Local favourite Lisa Raymond of nearby Wayne, Pennsylvania, struggled before beating German qualifier Vanessa Henke 6-4 6-4.

Today, sixth seed Anna Kournikova of Russia plays qualifier Mashona Washington, sister of former men’s player Malivai Washington, and ninth seed Chanda Rubin plays fellow American Amy Frazier.

Rubin, who beat American Jennifer Capriati in straight sets in the finals in Quebec on Sunday, received a seed when fifth seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain was forced to withdraw from the field due to fatigue.

The top four seeds — Martina Hingis of Switzerland, American Lindsay Davenport, spaniard Conchita Martinez and Nathalie Tauziat of France — received first-round byes.

No matter what happens this week and next, it appears mathematically impossible for Davenport, defending champion in both events, to accumulate enough points to pass Hingis in the rankings.

Simply to qualify for the chase, Halard-Decugis must advance to the semifinals here, while Frazier would need to win and knock off one of the top-ranked players in the final.

With the WTA moving its end-of-year championships to Munich, Germany, beginning in 2001, the Advanta, which has served as a preliminary event, will be replaced by a tournament in Nice, France.

At this point no date has been made available to replace the Advanta in the Philadelphia area. In 1998, the U.S. indoor men’s event concluded a run in Philadelphia going back to the early 1960s. It was never replaced. (REUTERS)
