Ganguly favours reposing of more faith in newcomers MUMBAI, Nov 3: Indian captain Saurav Ganguly today favoured reposing of more faith by selectors in newcomers and rescheduling of domestic cricket programme. The present national team has many young players and couple of failures should be expected and they should be given a long run before rejecting them, he told newsmen here. Ganguly, who would for the first time lead the national test squad against Bangladesh in Dhaka from November ten, also castigated the media for being "harsh" on the team after its collapse for 54 runs against Sri Lanka in the Coca Cola Cup final in Sharjah. He regretted that even before they had embarked on the Nairobi tour there was talk of India losing to Kenya. "But ultimately we lost a close final", he said with visible pride. Pointing out to a particular remark in the media that the team wasted valuable time by coming back to India instead of going to Sharjah directly from Nairobi, the batting ace said, "how can net practice for a day alter a match drastically." As to how India could fail against Sri Lankan spinners in the Sharjah Tourney, Ganguly explained that Muthaiah Muralitharan, though a quality spinner, had till the start of the event, had not taken more than three wickets against India. This time there were some batsmen who had not played against him before hence he was more successful, he opined. He denied allegations that senior players were not taking interest in domestic cricket because there was no money in it. "We are always travelling for international commitments though personally I am in favour of playing domestic cricket. It is upto the BCCI to reorganise the calender," he added. Ganguly said senior players had in the past drew the attention of the BCCI to plethora of one-dayers and less of test matches."But I guess the money from one-dayers is as important," he said. Justifying his vote in favour of his Bengal teammate Saba Karim for the Dhaka test though he has not played much cricket following an eye injury, Ganguly said he has most number of first class hundreds and has started playing times of India matches. He reiterated that he wanted an award winning team rather than an individual and hoped that next time India will win the Ceat International Team Award. Former Australian captain Alan Border, who was also present, chipped in to say that with the cricket talent available to Ganguly that day was not far off (for the award). Border admitted that after the World Cup win, Austrlians were not very focussed and lost seven out of the ten one-dayers they played. About the forthcoming West Indies tour down under, border predicted that if Brian Lara failed to fire or even if he did but got no batting support then Australia would have no problem in setting a record of test wins. Steve Waugh upset at allegations about Mark SYDNEY, Nov 3: Australian captain Steve Waugh said today he was upset that his twin brother Mark had been implicated in crickets match-fixing scandal. Steve told reporters at the teams training camp in Queensland that the accusations against Mark had affected the whole team. "You cant just pretend it is not happening, we certainly talked about it," Steve said. "I feel very sorry for him at the moment. Its hard for myself and the family when you pick up a lot of headlines. Its not easy." Mark has been accused by an Indian bookmaker of accepting money in exchange for providing information about the team and their tactics at a six-a-side tournament in Hong Kong. He denies the claims and has promised to clear his name. The gifted batsman was fined in 1995 after admitting he took money from another Indian bookmaker for information about pitch and weather conditions. "Its a difficult time but hell have a lot of support and hell come through this," Steve said. "It might come to a stage when it all gets a bit too much." "I dont think its reached that stage yet because hes still playing well ... But if it continues it is obviously not going to be easy." The Australian Cricket Board announced yesterday that it had asked the anti-corruption unit of the sports ruling body, the ICC, to investigate the claims. It has allowed mark to continue playing while the inquiry is held. The Australians are preparing to face the West Indies in a five-test series starting in Brisbane on November 23. (REUTERS). |

Aravinda shocked by match-fixing allegations COLOMBO, Nov 3: Sri Lankan batsman Aravinda De Silva today said he was approached by several persons in the past offering money during tours to India and other countries but he declined the offers and on each such occasion informed the tour managers about them. Aravinda considered to be one of the best batsmen in international cricket, was quoted in the state run daily news as saying that he was shocked to note that he has been linked to match fixing. "If I was offered any bribe to fix matches I have brought it to the notice of the relevant authorities," he said. Aravinda has been named in the Indian Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) report for allegedly accepting $15,000 to fix a test match at Lucknow in 1994. His friend and former captain Arjuna Ranatunga, whose name has also been mentioned by one of the Indian bookies, has already denied that he was either offered or accepted money. The Sri Lankan Cricket Board had earlier stated that it would take stern action after receiving an official copy of the report from the Indian Cricket Board. Sri Lankan Board President, Thilanga Sumathipala has already written a letter to his Indian counterpart seeking an official copy of the report. (PTI) |

Marchand to quit as Marseille President MARSEILLE, FRANCE, Nov 3: Beleagured Olympique Marseille President Yves Marchand said he intends to stand down "in the next few days". Marchands departure was announced in a press release issued by the club yesterday. Marchand, who has been President since May last year, has been at the centre of internal conflicts that have racked the struggling French First Division side in recent weeks. The best supported club in France are currently 14th in the 18-team first division after avoiding relegation only on the final day of last season. Major shareholder Robert Louis-Dreyfus on Wednesday was reported as considering offering the job of club manager to former French international Eric Cantona. Marchand denied any contact between the club and cantona. (REUTERS) |
Stuttgart Masters Series STUTTGART (GERMANY), Nov 3: Unseeded Romanian Andrei Pavels 6-3 6-4 defeat of Andre Agassi at the Stuttgart Masters Series yesterday meant all top four seeds have fallen by the wayside. Marat Safin, Gustavo Kuerten and Magnus Norman had all made early exits when the Australian Open champion, back in action after a two-month break, added his name to the list of casualties. Fourth seed Agassi, playing his first event since his shock second round defeat by Frenchman Arnaud Clement at the US Open last August, dropped his first service game in each set to bow out. "I never really had an opportunity to get into it," said the former world number one. "I lost my serve early and I never really had a chance on his. He served really well." Earlier, Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean beat ATP champions race leader and second seed Gustavo Kuerten 7-6 6-3 in one of many upsets of an eventful day. French Open champion Kuerten, fighting to end the year at number one, will draw consolation from the fact that top seed Safin and Norman, the third seed, also went out. Safin, a close pursuer of the Brazilian in the standings, was tamed 7-6 6-4 by Britains Greg Rusedski in the battle of big hitters. Norman, ranked fourth, was beaten 4-6 6-3 6-4 by unfancied Dutchman Sjeng Schalken who stepped in only after Frenchman Cedric Pioline withdrew on Monday with a back injury. Hewitt ousts Henman Wimbledon champion Pete Sampras, who was third in the standings, has pulled out of both the Stuttgart tournament and the Paris Open, the final Masters Series event, starting on November 13. Grosjean, ranked 26th in the champions race, gave a virtually faultless display, surviving two set points in the first set tie break before taking it 11-9 with Kuerten hitting a forehand into the net. A brilliant forehand winner enabled the Frenchman to break his opponent and open a 3-1 lead in the second set which he wrapped up with an unforced error by Kuerten on match point. "I couldnt come up with the big shots at important moments," said Kuerten. "My goal remains to finish the year at number one. Thats a big motivation. Rusedski, a semifinalist here last year, will face Australias Lleyton Hewitt in the quarter-finals. Hewitt, the eighth seed, beat Tim Henman 3-6 6-3 6-4 in an exciting contest to stay in the hunt for one of the three remaining places in the season-ending Masters Cup later this month in Lisbon. Henman now stands only an outside chance of making the trip to Portugal. Kafelnikov survives Safin, who demolished Sampras in the US Open final last September, broke Rusedski in the seventh game of the first set and served for the set leading 5-4. But Rusedski broke back, won the set via a tie break and cruised to victory. "I expected to win my first two matches but Im pleasantly pleased to be in the quarter-finals," said Rusedski, who had lost his two previous matches against 20-year-old Safin. "Im playing well at the moment and whoever wants to beat me will have to play really good tennis." Safin was bitterly disappointed. "Im really upset because I lost a great opportunity to get closer to number one," he said. "Greg played very well and I did not take enough risks. Tactically, I was really bad." Olympic champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov, seeded sixth, was the only big name to survive. The Russian moved past Argentine baseliner Franco Squillari 6-3 7-5 and will play Schalken for a place in the last four. Pavel will meet South African Wayne Ferreira, who saw Australian Mark Philippoussis withdraw with a painful neck after the opening game of their third round match. Grosjean will meet former French Open champion Michael Chang who beat Moroccan Younes El Aynaoui 7-5 6-2 in the days final match. (REUTERS) |
