Lara denies charges in Indian report BRIDGETOWN (BARBADOS), Nov 2: West Indies batsman Brian Lara has refuted charges by an Indian bookmaker who has claimed he had paid him to "underperform" during two one-day matches in India in 1994. "I categorically deny taking money from a bookmaker or anyone else to underperform," Lara said in a statement issued by the West Indies Cricket Board secretariat in St.Johns, Antigua yesterday. The former West Indies captain arrived in London yesterday with the West Indies team for an overnight stop on its way to its forthcoming tour of Australia, to learn that Indias Central Bureau of Investigation report into match-fixing included evidence that a prominent bookmaker had given him "around dlrs 40,000" to "underperform" in the two matches on the tour of India in late 1994. Team manager Ricky Skerritt told the Associated Press from the teams hotel at Londons Heathrow airport that Lara was unfazed by the claims that had been first hinted at in newspaper reports in Jamaica before the teams departure Tuesday . "Brian is in great spirits," Skerritt said. "He is aware of it, we have spoken about it and, as far as hes concerned, it never happened. Hes not even prepared to discuss it further." (AP) |

DURBAN, Nov 2: Lance Klusener hit two successive sixes as South Africa completed their fourth successive win over New Zealand in a rain-hit fifth limited overs international at Kingsmead here. Klusener made an unbeaten 41 off 18 balls as South Africa won by six wickets with nine balls to spare after being set a stiff target under the Duckworth-Lewis scoring method yesterday. Jacques Kallis played the anchor role for South Africa, making 50 not out off 80 balls. New Zealand had struggle five off 32.4 overs in an innings interrupted twice by rain but South Africa had to make 153 off 32 overs, with the target being revised upwards to make allowance for the curtailment of the New Zealand innings. The task looked difficult on a pitch which helped seam bowlers until Klusener joined Kallis and cut loose. Klusener hit three fours in an over from Geoff Allott, then finished the match with two successive sixes off Shayne OConnor. Kallis won the man of the match award. Apart from his crucial innings he held two slip catches and took his 100th limited overs international wicket in his 113th match. New Zealand were sent in to bat in seam-friendly conditions after rain delayed the start by half an hour. South Africas fast bowlers prospered in helpful conditions after skipper Shaun Pollock won the toss, although New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming (21) and fellow left-hander Roger Twose (38) put on 63 for the third wicket. Chris Cairns batted brightly in making an unbeaten 25 off 30 balls. There was an interruption of more than an hour when New Zealand were on 81 for five after 27.3 overs. Cairns hammered Klusener for three fours in an over when play resumed and then hit a straight six in Kluseners next over as he and Chris Harris added 33 off 5.1 overs before the second stoppage. Pollocks decision to bowl was quickly justified when he had Chris Nevin caught at second slip for nought, with Nathan Astle following soon afterwards in the same fashion to Allan Donald. Both Fleming and Twose played and missed several times during their partnership as the ball deviated sharply off the seam but Twose in particular played some aggressive strokes during an innings of 38. Twose was bowled by Jacques Kallis, the 100th limited overs wicket for the South African allrounder in his 113th match. Fleming was given out lbw to Makhaya Ntini in the next over, although replays showed that umpire Wilf Diedricks had erred, with the ball pitching outside the leg stump. South Africa lead the series 4-0. The first match of the series was rained out. SCORECARD: New Zealand (innings closed due to rain) C. Nevin c Kallis b Pollock 0 N. Astle c Kallis b Donald 3 S. Zone Ranji Trophy match NEW DELHI, Nov 2: Delhi today made light work of services when they defeated their opponents by a huge margin of 168 runs in the North Zone Ranji Trophy match here. Former India speedster Ashish Nehra took a haul of six wickets conceding just 31 runs as Services were bowled out for paltry 99 runs in their second innings chasing 268 to win. Delhi, who had taken 32-run first innings lead, were bowled out for 235 in their second essay, but then reduced the visitors to 83 for eight at the draw of stumps yesterday. Former Ranji champions needed just seven overs on the final day today to bring an end to services fight and claim full eight points from this season opener. Barring services skipper Sanjay Verma, who remained not out on 39, no other services batsman was able to show any resistence and the team failed to garner any point. Delhi travel to Haryana for their next match starting from November 5 to 8, while services will host Himachal Pradesh during the same period. Services started the day on a cautious note with overnight batsmen Sanjay Verma and Syed Javed as the wicket gave support to the medium pacers. Ashish Nehra, who claimed five wickets yesterday, was by stand-in Delhi skipper Rahulsanghvi and the bowler justified the move bowling a tight line to unsettle the Services batsmen. Delhi got the breakthrough in sixth over of the day when Syed Javed was run out following a mix-up in the middle. After the fall of Javeds wicket, Services lost all hopes of giving a fightback as the last man Arun Sharma could not give necessary support to his captain. Nehra troubled Sharma from the first ball itself and never gave him chance to settle down. Nehra claimed his sixth wicket in the 32nd over of the innings when he bowled a yorker length delivery to beat Sharma, who could just remain mute spectator and see his stumps uprooted. Lanka seeks Indian help in match fixing probe COLOMBO, Nov 2: Sri Lanka has asked India to help probe allegations that World Cup-winning skipper Arjuna Ranatunga and his deputy Aravinda De Silva were involved in match fixing, officials said today. Sri Lankas Board of Control for Cricket (BCCSL) asked its Indian counterpart for copies of a report published yesterday by the Indian Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that probed corruption in cricket. "The BCCSL requires to obtain immediately a copy of the 162-page report and relevant authenticated transcripts of evidence," said Sri Lankas cricket chief Thilanga Sumathipala in a letter to Indian cricket chief A C Muthiah. Sri Lankas Ranatunga, 36, who retired from international cricket in August, said he had never had any dealings with bookmakers nor was he ever offered money to throw matches. "Had any offer of a bribe been made to me at any time I would have promptly reported the matter to the appropriate authorities," Ranatunga said in a one-paragraph statement issued here yesterday. He was reacting to allegations in India that he and his deputy, Aravinda De Silva, accepted bribes to fix matches. "The references to me in the Indian newspaper articles are entirely false," he said. There was no immediate reaction from De Silva, who is still playing test cricket for Sri Lanka. A bookmaker, Mukesh Gupta, had claimed in a testimony published in CBI report that Ranatunga and De Silva helped him fix an Indian victory in the Lucknow test in 1994. (AFP) |
