Mystery over mobile phone used by Azhar DUBAI, May 7: The mystery about the owner of the mobile phone which former Indian skipper Mohammed Azharuddin used during the Sharjah Cricket Tournament has been solved, a local daily claimed here today. Gulf News said it has finally traced the owner of the mobile after an extensive investigation."The number is registered with a Dubai-based businessman, who is also involved with cricket in a personal capacity", it said. The phone is registered for over six years in the name of Bluebells Shipping Company, managed by one Mr Pradeep Menon. Mr Menon also owns the first-ever indoor cricket stadium in the region, Insportz. "Yes, I did give Azharuddin my mobile phone during the Sharjah Tournament", Mr Menon confirmed to Gulf News. He said "there is nothing to hide. Azharuddin is an old friend and when he needed a phone, I gave it to him". He said he had known Azharuddin for a long time. "I even send my teenage son to Hyderabad for cricket coaching". Two years ago, Azharuddin had also visited the Insportz complex at Menons request and signed autographs for cricket fans. Mr Menon said "a friend was in need and I helped him out, there is no hanky panky". He said the phone given to Azharuddin was registered in the companys name and was a spare line. "We use this for our operation staff as and when we need to. Otherwise, we keep it switched off". The mobile used by Azharuddin during the Sharjah Tournament had become a hot topic of discussion in the wake of Cronjegate match-fixing scandal. (UNI) |
Pak judge firm on scandal report LONDON, May 7: Pakistan Cricket Board will be unable to cover up further the contents of a report into match-fixing as the judge who headed the inquiry says he would immediately blow the whistle, media reported today. Justice Malik Mohammed Qayyum has told the Sunday telegraph that he is prepared to denounce PCB if necessary. His report is widely believed to contain damning information on seven Pakistan cricketers, some of whom are recommended to receive life bans from cricket. Qayyum says that he is not prepared to let such a scandal be overlooked. The probe report, completed six months ago, has been gathering dust in an official locker, but last week the International Cricket Council announced that the PCB had just five weeks to make the contents of the report public. According to the news report, it is feared that in the five-week period, certain parts of it may be deleted or watered down. Qayyum however said if this were to happen, he would step forward and say so. It cant be watered down. The report is final. I have a sealed copy with me and if they change it then everybody would know, he said. If they change the report, I will then make it public, Qayyum, who has one of the three copies, said. (PTI) |

Malaysia hold Korea 2-2 China thrash Uzbekistan 11-1 KUALA LUMPUR, May 7: Hosts Malaysia staged a superb fightback from a 0-2 deficit to hold title contenders Korea to a 2-2 draw in a pool A match in the Junior Asia Cup mens hockey tournament here today. It almost looked curtains for the hosts as they went into the second half trailing by goals from Jung Seong Tae and Lee Jung Seong at the Bukit Jalil Stadium. But the vastly improved Malaysia rallied brilliantly with Chua Hoon Huat scoring both the goals - one off a penalty corner and the other via a stroke - to remain in contention for a semifinal berth from the tough group which also includes defending champions Pakistan. Korea have seven points from three matches and Malaysia four from two. The hosts have two matches in hand against Pakistan and Singapore. Pakistan are on six points with a match against Korea also to go. Earlier, Song Yi scored six goals including a hat-trick as China also kept alive their hopes of a last four place from pool B with a 11-1 rout of lowly Uzbekistan. Beaten by India and Japan, China will have to raise their game and score big wins against minnows Bangladesh and Iran if they are to clinch a spot in the semis. Both Korea and Malaysia began defensively, knowing well that a defeat could jeopardise their chances of entering the next stage. Korea had only two men upfront while Malaysia packed their midfield and kept Mohammed Fairul and Suhaimi forward to pounce on any loose balls. The tactics almost worked for the hosts but for some poor work by their forwards. However, it was Korea who first mounted pressure in the 10th minute with a penalty corner. A minute later, Malaysia earned their first penalty corner but a fumble undid the effort. Malaysian attacks were led by Madzli who apart from feeding the forwards also bottled up the Korean midfield by not letting them get into a rythmn. Malaysia should have gone ahead in the 22nd minute, but Mohammed Fairuz Ramli fumbled with a beautiful pass from Suhaimi Ibrahim with only the goalkeeper to beat. Korea, however, took the initiative and launched some good attacks, forcing their second penalty corner for their first goal. Jung Seong tae slotted home a rebound to put Korea ahead. Malaysia could have levelled in the 26th minute but Mohd Ramli hit out with only the Korean goalkeeper in front. The Koreans counter-attacked through the left flank caapitalising on some sloppy defending by Shanker Shanmugam. Time and again, he let the rivals through with erratic play. With just a minute left for the break, Shanker again did the mistake of letting Lee Jung Seon through, who with a deft move on the top of the circle slammed the ball into the top corner of the net to make it 2-0 for Korea. Malaysia were on the offensive on change of ends, taking the fight to the Koreans but wasted three penalty corners, fumbling at the crucial moments. (PTI) |

Dalmiya ousted from ICC finance committee: Report LONDON, May 7: International Cricket Council (ICC) president Jagmohan Dalmiya has been unceremoniously ousted from the key finance committee of the sports governing body which is currently negotiating the sale of television rights for the 2003 World Cup in South Africa and the 2007 event in the West Indies. The decision was taken during the ICCs two-day emergency meeting, held at Lords last week to discuss what action should be taken over the raging match-fixing allegations which have thrown the game into crisis over the last month, the Sunday Telegraph reported today. The extra-ordinary action was taken on the second day of the deliberations when Dalmiya chaired the highly influential finance and marketing committee being the president of ICC. England and Wales Cricket Board chief Lord Ian Maclaurin and New Zealand cricket boss Sir John Anderson, proposed at the meeting that ICC president should not now or in future take part in any financial negotiations on behalf of the board and it was unanimously agreed to, the newspaper said. Another delegate, who did not wished to be named, confirmed that after a discussion it was proposed that the president should not take part in any financial negotiations in future. Nobody disagreed, he said. After the Lords meeting Dalmiya did go to Paris - the venue of finance committee meeting. This was a concession by the emergency meeting which allowed him to be on hand in consultative capacity while not attending the negotiations, the report said. The remaining four members of the finance and marketing committee - Ehsan Mani of Pakistan, Ray White, former South African Board president, Pat Rousseau, president of the West Indian Board, and ICC chief executive David Richards - were finalising the details of the biggest deal ever known in cricket: the broadcasting and internet rights for the next two World Cups, for which the bidding has already topped 500 million. According to the report three bids have been shortlisted and the ICC committee are understood to be split between the two highest bids. Their recommendations will be presented to the executive board at the ICCs Annual General Meeting next month - one of the last acts of Dalmiyas presidency. The decision to link together the bids for the next two World Cups has itself been a controversial and unique one. In all previous World Cups since the tournaments inception in 1975, the broadcasting deals have been negotiated for one at a time. Moreover, the host authority have conducted these negotiations not ICC, until now. (PTI) India in womens Asia Cup semis KUALA LUMPUR, May 7: Suman Bala and Mamta Kharab struck three goals apiece as India stormed into the semifinals of the Junior Asia Cup for women, thrashing Taiwan 9-0 for their second win in Pool B here today. In another match, Japan walloped Thailand 14-0 to keep superb momentum towards a last four berth. India, strong title contenders along with South Korea, were held by the plucky Taiwanese till the 33rd minute before opening their account through Neha Singh who slammed in a fine field attempt. The winners were just 1-0 up at half-time but came back strongly in the second session to score their second big win after beating Thailand 17-0 in their opening game yesterday. Eight goals came in the second half with three each by Suman Bala and striker Mamta Kharab, who recently played for the senior team in the Olympic hockey qualifiers at Milton Keynes, England, while Adeline Kerketta and Sumari Tete scored the other two goals. Suman Balas goals came off penalty corners in the 44th, 57th and 61st minutes while Mamta scored in the 54th, 59th and 70th minutes to take her tally to eight goals, the highest in the tournament. Sumrai Tete scored in the 66th minute while Adline Kerketta struck in the 49th minute. India play Japan in their last pool match and a win will help them top Pool B and avoid a premature clash with favourites Korea, who are expected to top Pool A on their way to the semifinals. (PTI) |
